December through April

This is the dry season, which is also the most popular window for diving in Guanacaste. 

 

Visibility often reaches 60 to 75 feet, the sun is reliable, and the water feels warm and comfortable. Seas are often calmer, which is ideal for families with younger kids or anyone who’s trying diving for the first time. Because mornings tend to be calm, most boats leave early. Expect brilliant conditions for underwater photography and a good chance of spotting turtles, rays, and reef fish.

 

May through November

This is the green season, which brings short afternoon showers, fewer crowds, and some of the best wildlife action of the year. 

 

Nutrient-rich waters attract large species, especially at offshore sites. (If you’re interested in big life encounters, this season is exciting!) Rates for vacation rentals are often more accommodating during this period, which also makes it appealing for budget-conscious families or groups coordinating travel costs.

 

Manta Ray Season

If your dream is to see giant manta rays, the best time for diving in Guanacaste is from November through May. Sightings peak between January and March. Mantas glide through the currents around the Catalina Islands and sometimes the Bat Islands. The experience of seeing a 15 to 20-foot manta appear out of the blue is something many divers never forget.

Depths often range from 40 to 120 feet, and currents can be strong. Most dive operators recommend that guests have at least an open-water certification and some comfort with drift conditions, although snorkelers can sometimes join depending on the conditions.

The Bat Islands, located inside Santa Rosa National Park, are a legendary destination for advanced divers. The main attraction is the possibility of seeing bull sharks in their natural environment. These encounters aren’t baited or fed; they’re simply wild animals passing through a protected area with deep canyons and nutrient-rich currents.
