Packing for Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste is like packing for almost any other warm destination – except when it’s not. Over the years, we’ve learned a thing or two about what people think they need to pack vs. what they really need while they’re here.
Thankfully, there’s a lot of overlap. And, if you forget something, you can likely find a passable substitute in Costa Rica. But it may be hard to find. It may be expensive. And who wants to spend hours of their vacation hunting down hiking shoes, anyway?
And so, for all you clever, resourceful planners and packers out there, we’ve pulled together our list of what travelers most often forget to pack – and a few things you should remove from your suitcase, stat!
For the sake of this post, we’ll skip over all the but-of-course! basics, like shirts and underwear and your passport. Instead, we’ve tried to pinpoint a few must-pack inclusions that you may not know you’ll need for your trip to Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste.
Because you may have remembered to pack only a few credit cards (and to notify your bank that you’ll be traveling. You may have rolled up some extra socks to account for fording rivers on your hikes. And you may have already packed your zip-on, zip-off pants/shorts. But have you remembered the following?
✅ Quick-Dry and/or Cotton Clothing
Whether you’re staying in Tamarindo for your entire trip or are splitting your time between the beach, the mountains, and volcano country, you’ll appreciate having both quick-dry clothing (great for the rainforest, hiking, waterfall trails, the cloud forest, etc.) and cotton clothing (everyday wear and breathability).
✅ Lightweight Rain Jacket or Windbreaker
Believe it or not, it can get chilly (only sometimes) in the evenings! So, even if you’re here during the dry season (roughly, December through April), it’s a great idea to pack a long-sleeved layer. And if you’re here when it might rain (May through November), then it’s a must to make it waterproof, so you can layer up if necessary.
✅ Day Pack/Dry Pack
If you’re an adventurous traveler, then chances are very good that you’ll need a day pack (essentially, a small and lightweight backpack) during your travels. Many hikes, day trips, and other tours departing Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste will keep you busy for hours – hours during which you’ll be glad you packed plenty of snacks, water, extra camera batteries, etc. into your day pack. If you’re visiting during the rainy season, make it a waterproof day pack or a dry pack!
✅ Comfortable Footwear (Multiple)
Unless you’re planning on spending your entire vacation at the beach and by the pool – and even then, in some cases! – then you’ll want to pack a few options for footwear. High on our list of recommendations are 1) closed hiking shoes (sneakers or boots) and 2) water shoes or sandals. Here’s why: Hiking shoes are essential to keeping your feet healthy and protected from jungle critters and water shoes make walking out onto the rocks a breeze at low tide. And whenever possible, you’re really going to walk out onto the rocks at low tide!
✅ Sunblock + Insect Repellent
Both products are readily available in every supermarket, pharmacy, and many other points of sale throughout Costa Rica, but if you have sensitive skin or a favorite brand, do pack them! Specific products can be hard or, sometimes, impossible to locate here. Try to find a reef-safe sunblock for when you’re at the beach!
✅ Hat + Sunglasses
We cannot emphasize enough how sunny Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste can be! It’s gorgeous, it’s lovely, and it’s strong. So, in addition to sunblock, be sure to pack your favorite hat (to protect the crown of your head, which we rarely sunblock but can burn, trust us!) and UV sunglasses.
✅ Favorite Toiletries
Like sunblock and insect repellent, if you’re particular about your brands of toiletries (feminine hygiene products, contraceptives, etc.) and hygiene products (shampoo, conditioner, soap/body wash, face cleanser, contact lens solution, etc.), then be sure to pack them.
✅ OTC + Prescription Meds
Costa Rica’s pharmacies are well stocked but they may not carry your specific prescription – or they may not be able to issue your medication without a local prescription. Err on the safe side and pack any over-the-counter and/or prescription medicines you may need while here.
✅ Travel Surge Protector
You’re traveling with electronics. Protect your electronics!
It’s 2023 and chances are excellent that you’ll be packing light – not just to avoid round-trip airline surcharges (although that’s definitely part of it) but also because, once you’re here, you may not have a ton of transportation storage space (especially on shared shuttles, inexpensive private transportation, and many rental vehicles).
So, packing space is at a premium. Luckily, Costa Rica is warm so your clothes are relatively small and lightweight. You’re already ahead of the game! But as you pack those storage cubes, roll clothing as tightly as possible, and economize your luggage space, consider removing the following from your bags:
❌ More Than One Suitcase
While we’re on the topic of packing light and limited transportation storage, we highly recommend traveling with a maximum of one checked bag and one carry-on per person (plus a personal item). Not only will this provide savings at the airline counter, but it’ll also lighten your load (literally) while traveling in-country.
❌ Traveler’s Checks
Does anyone still use traveler’s checks in 2023? If so, they don’t live in Costa Rica. (Most of the country doesn’t even accept personal checks, FYI!)
❌ Guidebooks
We love guidebooks when we begin planning a trip, but the truth is that those books are hefty and require precious packing space and weight. If there’s a guidebook you love, consider purchasing its digital version and carrying it on your phone.
✅ And remember! When you book one of our condos or vacation homes, you secure the complimentary services of our in-house concierge (a real, live guidebook, so to speak!), who can advise you every step of the way – before and during your trip.
❌ Expensive Jewelry
You’ll quickly find that Costa Rica isn’t a fancy jewelry kind of place. What’s more, most travel guidance advises to leave the good stuff at home. So, choose some versatile earrings, swap out your wedding ring set for a titanium band, etc. – pare down to the bare minimum, and enjoy zero worries during your time here with us in Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste!
❌ High Heels
Costa Rican roads and sidewalks – and often, what sidewalks? – are not made for high heels. Choose healthy ankles and less frustration, and pack your favorite flats or dressy sandals.
❌ Rainboots
While we’re on the topic of footwear, we’re often asked if we’d recommend packing rainboots. The answer is no! They’re bulky and usually not terribly comfortable for long periods; instead, choose waterproof hiking sneakers or hiking boots.
❌ A 100% Full Suitcase
Be sure to leave some space to take home gifts and souvenirs!

If you’re planning your spring break in Costa Rica – and especially if you’re planning spring break 2023 – then it’s time to get moving. Spring is just around the corner and accommodations are filling up, activities are selling out, and travel is kicking into high gear.
No stress, though. We’ve pulled together a few of our favorite tips for spring break on a budget: what to do (and what not to do), what free + low-cost activities to enjoy, and where to stay – yes, even if you’re looking for availability this year! So, let’s get started.
There’s no other way to say it: Rental cars can be a major expense in Costa Rica. (Think: $100-$250+ per DAY, including insurance.) So, if you’re on a budget and don’t plan to travel up and down the coast every day, then you may want to skip this one in lieu of a few more budget-friendly alternatives.
So, what are those alternatives? We recommend starting with a combination of airport transportation, private drivers/taxis/Uber, public buses, bike rentals, and walking, depending on where you’re headed. Or, if you’re truly an independent, adventurous spirit with a need to feel the wind in your hair, ask our concierge, Cris, to find you an all-in rental car price to fit your budget. Get in touch and we’ll be happy to help you figure it all out!
Unless you’re traveling on a true shoestring and staying in shared hostel rooms, then “budget” probably falls into the realm of $75-$100/bedroom/night. And if that’s the case, then there’s no better buy for your vacation buck than a vacation home.
Here’s why: In addition to offering more space, greater privacy, and private amenities, vacation homes are often less expensive than their hotel counterparts. For example, several of our Tamarindo vacation homes are under $100/night per bedroom – and they offer a lot more than a bedroom (in a lot more space than your standard 200-square-foot hotel room).
One of the greatest budget hacks of a vacation home for your spring break in Costa Rica? Your in-house kitchen! So, use it. Visit one of our local grocery stores – the trip can be a cultural and enjoyable experience, in its own right! – and stock up on both your favorites and a few new fruits, veggies, and other ingredients.
You’ll find that cooking at home, whether it’s just a few of you or a whole group, is much more economical than eating out. That’s because staples like coffee, milk, fruit, fish, eggs, bread, pasta, vegetables, and even Costa Rica’s national beers are not expensive.
If you’re going to eat out, start at sodas, Costa Rica’s version of a family-owned diner. No, you won’t usually find them beachfront or with spectacular ocean views, but you will find great food at a great price.
Sodas typically service traditional Costa Rican fare, and the most popular, traditional, and filling of them all is the casado, which “marries” (casado means “married”) many of Costa Rica’s most traditional dishes, including your choice of protein (beef, chicken, pork, or eggs/fried cheese for the vegetarians), rice, beans, salad, and fried plantains, often served with a small fruit juice. For $3-$5 (at local sodas, not tourist traps), you cannot beat this cheap and filling meal!
Costa Rica offers an incredible array of vacation adventures. The problem is, they’re not what anyone would call cheap. That doesn’t mean they’re not worth it, though! Our top tip: Prioritize a few of the pricier adventures you’d most love to do, then round out your itinerary with free and low-cost activities.
These include:
Of course, there are many, many more low-cost and even free to almost-free activities here in Tamarindo. Really, it’s the beach! You can make a day of strolling the sand, bathing in the tide pools, walking the rocks at low tide, and sipping cold coconut water beneath the palms.
Holiday dates in Costa Rica often book up months or even years in advance. Here are a few options that still have availability for certain spring break 2023 dates:

Tamarindo, Guanacaste is one of Costa Rica’s most visited towns. You wouldn’t be the first to wonder if it’s also affordable.
Turns out, it is! While there are certainly plenty of tours and experiences you could splash out on, there are also plenty of budget-friendly Tamarindo things to do. From surfing and beach-hopping to sea turtle nesting and partying, Tamarindo offers up a full menu of free and inexpensive sights, experiences, and things to do for budget travelers.
Here are a few of our favorites:
It’s no secret that Tamarindo’s surf is epic, so it’s also no secret that this is a must-do activity while you’re in town.
What you may not know is that surfing can also be a budget activity in Tamarindo, Guanacaste, thanks to inexpensive board rentals: Offered up and down the beach for about $10-$20 a day, you can grab a board of your very own and catch the waves to your heart’s content. Be sure to check out these top beginner Tamarindo surf breaks and intermediate/advanced surf breaks.
Sometimes, it’s the little things! Located at the north end of town, Tamarindo’s estuary ferry is about as much fun as can be had for about $1-$2. This little boat will ferry you across the river mouth – a wise choice, given that crocs can lurk here! – and over to Playa Grande, where you can spend a day beachcombing.
While we’re on the topic of Playa Grande, this is a great place to spend a morning, an afternoon, or even an entire day.
Even though it’s a literal hop, skip, and a jump from downtown Tamarindo, Playa Grande is often uncrowded and quiet. Here, you can surf, stroll, or simply enjoy beach life. Bonus: there are several restaurants, cafes, and even a brewery (Las Olas Brewing) on Playa Grande, so you can truly while away in the day with not a care in the world.
We’re willing to bet the beaches are a big part of the reason you’re here in Costa Rica and specifically in Tamarindo, Guanacaste. So, why not take a day (or three) to beach hop around the coast?
If you want to go full budget traveler, then you can grab your banana bike and pedal your way to the best beaches on the coast. Or, if you feel like splashing out, rent a car, hire a driver, or call a taxi/Uber to shuttle you around.
Sea turtle nesting is one of our top life experiences, if you’d like to call it that. There is just something incredibly special and mesmerizing about watching these ocean giants lumber to shore, dig a pit, and lay hundreds of future turtles. Of course, this is also one of our region’s most critical preservation activities, as all Costa Rican sea turtle species are considered endangered. So, there are many great reasons to add this to your itinerary.
Something to note is that the most common location for sea turtle nesting is Ostional Wildlife Refuge, which is located 90 minutes south of Tamarindo, and therefore requires either an expensive tour or transportation to get there. If you’re on a tight budget, we recommend trying to spot leatherback sea turtles at Las Baulas National Marine Park, located right here in Playa Grande. The sightings are not as consistent and the turtles are not nearly as numerous, but when timed right, it’s an equally moving sight and experience.
Note that you must take an official tour (the only legal way to visit the turtles), which runs around $25-$35.
If you want to tap into the true flavor of Tamarindo, Guanacaste then you can’t miss the Tamarindo Night Market. Open every Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., this local mainstay is part dining, part entertainment, and part market.
Walk in and you’ll find dozens of local artisan vendors, who sell everything from handcrafted jewelry to glass-bottled kombucha. There are fire dancers and DJs and traditional Costa Rican dancing, as well as other forms of entertainment, which pair very well with the market’s onsite restaurants and food vendors, who serve up everything from cheesy pizza and pork BBQ to empanadas and vegan options.
If you’re looking for a little extra challenge in your vacation, we strongly recommend giving stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) a try!
This now not-so-new water sport is an incredible balance (literally) of equilibrium, core strength, and mettle – and it is hugely enjoyable, to boot! You’ll need only a SUP board (similar to a surfboard) and a paddle, a calm(ish) ocean, and a desire to explore. Paddle out, stand up, and start paddling: The wide world of the Pacific awaits!
Tamarindo is known as a destination for fun – and luckily, much of that fun can be enjoyed on a budget!
Case in point: Sundays in Tamarindo. You’ll have your choice of Sunday Funday, which is held on Sundays beginning at 11:30 a.m.; the weekly event is a pool party with live music, plus a free boat and shuttle included. It’s always a fabulous time!
We can also recommend the weekly Pool & Beach Crawl, also on Sundays, which begins with a 12-1 p.m. pre-party at Sharkys. Next up, join your fellow beach-crawlers to board a recycled U.S. school bus (yep, it’s exactly as you imagine it!) to crawl down the coast, explore some littler-known stops, and grab a drink at each. It culminates in oceanfront music, live entertainment, beach volleyball, and a bonfire at happy hour. And then, of course, a bus ride home!
There’s something to be said about the best things in life being free. One major point in favor of this maxim is a Tamarindo sunset: Brilliant almost every night of the year, this daily event is a favorite for everyone who has ever been to Tamarindo, Guanacaste.
We recommend hitting the beach around 5:00 p.m. to find your favorite spot. (Sunset is around 5:30 to 6:15, year-round.) Grab a seat, dig your toes into the sand, and simply enjoy the sight, as the tropical sun kisses the horizon and sets the sky ablaze in a fiery show of pink and purple, orange and yellow.
Look, there’s no beating around the bush here: Tamarindo is known for its joie de vivre! We love a good party and, therefore, a good party always seems to find its way to Tamarindo.
So, when you’re low on funds but big on fun, we recommend walking downtown to find a party that meets your vibe. Whether you’re as mellow as jazz or high-energy like techno, you will always find a bar, restaurant, or club that’s only as expensive as the drinks you order.
Why are food trucks such fun? We can’t quite put our finger on it but still we know it to be true!
Luckily, we now have the Jardín de Tamarindo, aka the Tamarindo Garden – a garden of food trucks, that is! Here, you can much, savor, and sample everything from budget-friendly Costa Rican ceviche and humongous waffles to cheesy tequeños and noodly stir fry. It’s an international smorgasbord and we love it!
When you seek relaxation, amenities, and luxuries without the luxury price, Ibis Condo #1 delivers. One of our favorite budget-friendly vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Guanacaste, this cozy condo is just right for anyone who seeks big amenities and serious oceanfront charm.
Located at the serene and beachfront Langosta Beach Club, this lovely condo is directly across from the beach – and yet, just a 10-minute walk to downtown Tamarindo. It’s the best of both worlds, for travelers who prefer to have one foot in tranquility and the other in the joys of downtown life, from tours and shopping to dining and nightlife.
At Ibis Condo #1, you’ll feel like you’ve entered another world: Sit out on your private terrace, surrounded by forest foliage. Retreat to your condo interiors, warm with local hardwoods, tropical ambiance, and modern touches. Prepare a meal in the fully equipped kitchen, read a book outdoors in the shade, or simply spend time with your travel companions. That’s why you’re here, after all!
Your rental also includes full membership privileges at Langosta Beach Club, with its beachfront, infinity-edge swimming pool overlooking the warm Pacific, plus upscale amenities including a French restaurant, full fitness center, Pilates and yoga studio, and a great bar with spectacular ocean views.
Villa Motmot – named for the motmot bird, one of Guanacaste’s most beautiful birds and a frequent visitor to this incredible villa – is both wholly welcoming and completely luxurious, in all the right ways. We’re talking a secluded hilltop location and Pacific Ocean views, a rooftop deck and a front-row seat to some of those magnificent sunsets we promised!
Located just 10 minutes (on foot!) to Tamarindo beaches, this eco-villa has a green soul and a story to tell: For more than 25 years, its builders have helped protect and reforest Costa Rica’s rainforests and now, they have built an incredible home with a low carbon footprint, including solar-heated water, solar-powered energy, water recycling, and a highly biodiverse garden to support birds and mammals.
Inside and out, you’ll spot no shortcuts: Villa Motmot is a celebration of modern and environmentally friendly design. As an example, each of the home’s six bedrooms features a king bed, smart TV, and A/C; the tropical gardens host not only wildlife but also a 12 x 7 meter Boule court for Boccia and Petanque; and the rooftop deck sprawls over 100 square meters (1,080 square feet).
That just happens to be our concierge, Cris’s, specialty!
She’s an expert in Tamarindo travel: Digging beneath the surface and reaching beyond the norm, Cris not only makes it her job to know Tamarindo (and its restaurants), but to get to know you, too! She’s like a real-life guidebook who expertly overlays Tamarindo’s most iconic experiences and must-do adventures with your needs, preferences, and plans. What’s more, she’ll work with your budget. Any budget – really.
It begins with our welcome packet, which you’ll receive after you make a booking. It’ll introduce you to many of our favorite things, so have a look. Start building your wish list. And then, talk to Cris and let the fun begin. It’s part magic, part expertise. And, as we said, completely free. So go ahead, pick Cris’s brain! She can’t wait to hear from you!
Food and drink are one of the greatest joys of travel: New flavors, new ingredients, and new takes on the flavors and ingredients you already know and love. And yet, it can be challenging to narrow down your options to the select few you’ll have time to sample while visiting. With that in mind, these Tamarindo restaurants and happy hours represent some of our favorites in and around town.
Tamarindo is a veritable smorgasbord of world cuisines making your personal choice from among the best restaurants in Tamarindo all the more challenging. To get you started on your way to guaranteed deliciousness, here are a few of our favorites.

Because here, one of our favorite Tamarindo restaurants earns its cred with its familiar pies and the chef’s special fried pizza (you read that right! FYI, it’s similar to a calzone), or the option take your palate into fine dining territory with the Master Chef pizza, (mozzarella cheese, fresh mushrooms, and white truffle oil), peppered mussels, and a host of other dishes. Don’t forget to pair it with a cocktail!

Gracing a gorgeous slice of Tamarindo beachfront, Nogui’s is one of those jack-of-all-trades places that somehow seems to master it all, too. For here, in addition to offering one of the choicest locations for Tamarindo restaurants, you’ll also discover some of the most delicious (and yet, decidedly un-fussy) seafood in town: shrimp & pineapple kebabs, lobster tacos, and fried or grilled fish to pair with steak, chicken, and a variety of vegan options.

We’ve said it many times before and we’ll likely say it many times again: Pangas is, hands down, one of our favorite Tamarindo restaurants! There’s a lot to love here, from its mouthwatering seafood and beachfront location to its brilliant sunsets and evenings beneath the twinkling lights. Because Pangas is all about great food in the perfect ambiance: at the foot of the Pacific, beside the estuary, and with your choice of sandy outdoor or refined indoor seating.
If you’re looking for the best places to crack open a cold one or try out a Costa Rican cocktail, then these happy hour spots (many, also our current favorite Tamarindo restaurants) offer beach views and a wonderful ambiance matched only by their creative drink menus.
Phone: +506-2438 9569
In addition to some of Tamarindo’s best seafood, El Chiringuito has built itself some serious happy hour buzz. And for good reason! Located directly on the beach, this is one of our favorite local sunset spots – the perfect location to dig your toes into the sand and watch the sun go down, a $2 beer or $5 drink in hand. Plus, you can stay for dinner (see above) and enjoy some of the best seafood you’ll find at Tamarindo restaurants!
Phone: +506-2653-0029
If you crave the sand between your toes and the Pacific at your feet, then you owe yourself a visit to Nogui’s at sunset. For here, where sun meets sea, Nogui’s offers not just incredible seafood (including a smattering of happy hour-appropriate finger foods!) but also great drinks, including 2×1 specials and $5 wine every night, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. That said, we firmly believe that almost any Nogui’s drink special pairs perfectly with grilled shrimp kebabs. Just saying…

When you’re seeking an elevated happy hour experience, Pangas is the place to be: The breeze in your hair, the surf at your feet, and the outdoor lights to create that perfect evening ambiance. Even better, their already excellent drinks menu is even better during happy hour (4:30 to 6:30 p.m.), when you can find 2×1 deals. If you can, definitely stay long after sunset and order a special meal. If you’re short on time, plan on just apps!

While Patagonia doesn’t strictly offer a regular happy hour, they do run regular 2×1 margarita specials – and they’re not stingy with the hours, either, as they typically run all afternoon, when available. Beyond that, we love Patagonia for its cozy ambiance, authentic Argentinean cuisine, and great drinks menu, which offers local beer, clerico and sangria by the pitcher, and a full menu of tried-and-true cocktails, including mojitos, caipirinhas, daiquiris, and more.
Phone: +506-2653-1073
A bar and grill with just the right amount of sass, Wild Panda goes long (verrry long) on its beer and hand-crafted cocktails. And we love it! From its local and craft beer options to house wines and tropical cocktails – think pineapple & passion fruit mojitos and a sunset sangria with seasonal fruits – this is a place that aims to please. And please you, it will, thanks to all-day 2×1 specials that include their Panda signature cocktails: frozen mojitos, frozen watermelon & vodka, and frozen pineapple & rum. They also offer $2 beer and $3 wine for daily happy hour, 3 to 5 p.m.
Wondering if you can be both surrounded by nature and within walking distance to lively, wonderful Tamarindo? Welcome to Ibis #9, just 100 meters (about a block) to the Pacific Ocean, overlooking a 650-acre nature conservancy, and across the way from the Langosta Beach Club (to which you’ll have access).
You’ll love this home’s spacious interiors, tropical woods, and oversized deck with a plunge pool and loungers. And you’ll love that you have access to the community’s nature preserve and Langosta Beach Club, featuring a full fitness center, Pilates and yoga studio, a French restaurant, a great bar with a spectacular ocean view, and a large infinity-edge pool looking out at the warm Pacific.
Best of all, one of the howler monkeys’ favorite trees is just outside your window! Welcome to paradise.
Where sky and sea come together, Puesta del Sol is truly a special place. Because here’s a question: Have you ever dreamed of flying? Of spreading your arms, your hair blowing in the breeze, and allowing your heart and soul to soar?
Puesta del Sol is a little like that.
Perched on a hilltop overlooking Tamarindo, this is a spectacular home of 300-degree panoramic views and architecture designed to amaze. Named for the sunset – or, more precisely, for the “setting of the sun” – Puesta del Sol is upscale yet warm, both remarkable and welcoming. Oversized windows both frame the view and an expansive infinity pool bids you to spend your mornings, your afternoons, your every moment on the terrace.
And then, there’s Puesta del Sol’s namesake: the blazing tropical sunset that sets the sky on fire, a riot of jewel tones, bright fluorescents, and muted pastels. Because, while this is a home built on details and rooted in refinement, it always remembers and honors the very reasons you’re here…
That just happens to be our concierge, Cris’s specialty!
If you’re planning a Costa Rican vacation, getaway, or escape, you’re likely also wondering what to do in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste. Or rather, what, of all the many things you might like to do, you absolutely should not miss. Because there’s a lot you’ll do here, but much more that you won’t. (This is why we recommend a second, third, and tenth visit…)
And, while we’ve covered many of our favorite things to do in Tamarindo (more than once), we thought we’d share an updated list. Because there are never enough suggestions, are there? Plan well and then enjoy to the fullest!
You’ve heard of Costa Rica’s stellar ecological reputation, but did you know that much of our success is due to exceptional conservation efforts? In fact, more than 25% of Costa Rica is protected within wildlife refuges, nature preserves, and private parks – an entire one-quarter of our biodiversity that can only be explored within our parks.
And so, we make our first suggestion: Carve out a day or two to explore the national parks that most spark your imagination. They’re rugged, they’re breathtaking, and they’re wildly different from the parks you have at home. And, did we mention, they’re a great deal at just $10 per person? Explore to your heart’s content!
Among our favorite (and closest) national parks in Guanacaste, you’ll find (in alphabetical order):
Tamarindo lives by a motto – “surf, eat, and have fun” – and nowhere is that more evident than in our nightlife. You can literally go from the surf, into your favorite oceanside restaurant, and continue the evening from there!
When it comes to Tamarindo nightlife, this is the kind of place where you don’t really have to seek it out; it’ll find you. There’s always a restaurant, a bar, a club, or a beach party to enjoy! That said, we do have a few suggestions, including the Tamarindo Night Market, where you’ll enjoy live music, international food, and artisan vendors; Tuesday night salsa dancing at Utopia, home to merengue, salsa, and other beats; and Twilight at Pangas Restaurant, when the sunset glows brilliant and the twinkle lights come on.
Need more? Check out our guide to Tamarindo nightlife.
It’s no secret that the Pacific Ocean is a big reason why you’re here: Coastal landscapes, soft sands, and sapphire waters beckon you to rest, relax, and enjoy all the ocean has to offer. And it’s all right here, in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste.
And there is so much to do (and much of it, on a budget!) that you could fill an entire vacation with just the Pacific. And with that in mind, here are a few of our favorite things:
Discover more of our favorite area activities, including those by sea!
Speaking of the Pacific and your budget, it doesn’t get much better than spending a day on the beach. Pack your towel, grab a beach chair (ask if your vacation rental includes them!), and head out to your favorite slice of sand for a day by the waves.
As you enjoy the sun, bury your toes in the sand, and wade out into the ocean, be sure to save $1 or $2 for a fresh pipa, or coconut-encased coconut water, fresh from the tree and ice cold! It’s one of our favorite things on a warm Costa Rican afternoon.
We know, we know – what’s the difference between a beach day and a relaxation day?
This is how we see it: On a beach day, you’re at the beach. On a relaxation day, you stay home! And by home, we mean your Tamarindo vacation rental, which is equipped with many relaxing accouterments that are best enjoyed on a long, languid, tropical day.
And speaking of your home-away-from-home, here are two suggestions for your upcoming getaway:
If we’re prioritizing relaxation and your Tamarindo experience, we’d recommend two of our favorites:
Speaking of relaxation, what if your vacation home came not just with beach proximity, convenience (it’s walking distance to Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste), luxury finishes, and a touch of paradise, but also with a beach club membership?
Welcome to Ibis #8, a quiet condo that comes with that aforementioned, ultra-relaxing beach club membership. And not just any beach club, but Langosta Beach Club, complete with a full fitness center, Pilates and yoga studio, a French restaurant, a great bar with a spectacular ocean view, and a large infinity-edge pool looking out at the warm Pacific.
Nicknamed “Bella Vida” – that’s “the Beautiful Life” – Sunrise 3 is a favorite for great reasons: It has Pacific Ocean views. The community has incredible amenities (and super relaxation opportunities). And this condo walking distance to everything!
That last part is important. Here in the land of year-round sun and pura vida, you usually have to make a choice: Do you want views or do you want convenience? Sunrise 3 defies the can’t-have-it-all trope and delivers both! Because, while you’ll have ocean views from your private terrace, you’re also in the heart of Tamarindo – no taxis, no Ubers, no asking for a ride… You can walk everywhere.
And then, there’s the community’s oversized resort pool, the ocean-view jungle terrace, and the incredible beach, which is located just a few steps across the street. Ahhh, paradise!
We know, the options can be overwhelming. But, as ever, we’re here to help. Cris is here to help.
Simply put: She’ll handle everything. All the logistics. Every reservation. Airport transportation. Tamarindo transportation. From A to Z and everything in between: When you book one of our Tamarindo vacation rentals, our in-house concierge will quickly be in touch.
She’s an expert in Tamarindo travel: Digging beneath the surface and reaching beyond the norm, Cris not only makes it her job to know Tamarindo, but to get to know you, too!
Did you know that more than a quarter of Costa Rica is protected by national parks, wildlife refuges, and nature preserves? It’s one of the nation’s primary conservation efforts and, over the last four decades, this push has transformed the country’s landscapes. And you can explore much of it, right here at these wildly diverse national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
They’re rugged. They’re breathtaking. They’re educational. And they’re memorable. They’re also a great deal, at about $10 per person. So you can explore, as much as you’d like. Enjoy!
In alphabetical order:
When you think about national parks, we’re betting you envision hikes and waterfalls and scenic vistas. And Barra Honda has those. But that’s not why you’re here.
Welcome to Costa Rica’s subterranean national park. That’s right: Barra Honda’s most treasured sights lie not above, but below the earth’s surface. Here, where 70 million years of shifting tectonic plates nudged ancient coral reefs and force soft limestone to mold and form, creating an underground cave system you’re now free to explore.
Fair warning, though – this isn’t the developed caving tourist experience you might be used to. This is true spelunking and unpolished caving: an authentic, real, and wholly exciting experience that, heads up, can also be challenging and raw. We highly recommend booking a guided caving tour, which will take you down into three of the park’s most explored sites: the Trap, Terciopelo, and Santa Ana caverns.
We feel like we’re spilling a secret with this one, but Diriá National Park (pronounced deer-ee-AH) is a little bit of a secret around these parts. (And even among national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica…)
We’re not quite sure why, though. Sure, it’s a bit off the beaten path but then, so many national parks are. And sure, it’s wild and rugged but then again, so many national parks are. And then, there’s the primary forest (rare) and tropical dry forest (rarer still), the incredible hikes and the wildlife you can find only here, thanks to these uncommon ecosystems and vast biodiversity… In other words, gorgeous, breathtaking, and exceptional reasons to visit.
If you’re looking for a feel-good true story, then look no further than our province’s eponymous national park – if not the most visited, then one of the most appropriately named national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica!
In 1989, Dr. Daniel Janzen, a conservationist and evolutionary ecologist, founded the park to demonstrate that the world can “grow” national parks. His choice of site: this biologically important habitat bridge, which links the slopes of Orosi Volcano and Cacao Volcano to high-altitude cloud forest.
These diverse landscapes are more than your standard critical habitats: In addition to being a home for migratory and resident bird species, Guanacaste National Park also serves as critical habitat for Costa Rica’s big cat species – specifically, for the two largest, pumas and jaguars, both of which require extensive roaming grounds.
The conservationist in all of us will be happy to know that the park is regenerating faster than even Dr. Janzen predicted, evolving from near-barren cattle pasture into secondary forest, including lowland dry forest, cloud forest, and rain forest. You can even hike across the Continental Divide!
You may have heard (or read) it called Marino Las Baulas National Park, but this one’s more accurate name is Las Baulas National Marine Park. That’s for two reasons: The first is that the park’s extensive acreage is mostly of the marine variety – 43,240+ acres (175 km2) ocean acres to just 1,900 acres (7.7 km2) on land – and because this park is a critically important nesting site for endangered leatherback sea turtles (in Spanish, baulas).
For here, this coastal wonderland welcomes nesting sea turtles every year – all the more important, given that there are so few of these nesting sites remaining in the world AND that leatherback populations are on the decline (hence, endangered). And if leatherback turtle conservation isn’t enough to get you there, know that this national park is also home to the biodiverse Tamarindo Estuary and its mangrove-lined canals, which are home to an incredible array of flora and fauna.
Our tour of Guanacaste now takes us into the rivers and watersheds that form one of the country’s most important wetland sanctuaries: Palo Verde National Park, a 45,500-acre wonderland that encompasses 15 varied habitats.
Located at the mouth of the Tempisque River, Palo Verde rises to form critically important habitats – especially for resident and migrant bird populations. In fact, if you’re a birder (or have any interest in birds at all, really), this is your new favorite place: the park’s salt ponds, rivers, marshes, mangroves, and other habitats can house up to 250,000 birds at one time. You read that right – a quarter of a million birds, all at once!
We’re talking bucket-list sightings, including roseate spoonbills and many species of egrets, grebes, ibis, and herons. The park also provides refuge to the largest concentrations of waterfall and shorebirds in Central America and is home to the country’s largest jaguarondi population (Herpailurus yagouaroundi, a small species of wildcat). This one’s a must for national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica!
Costa Rican folklore tells the legend of a once-princess who, after her father threw her lover in Rincón de la Vieja’s volcanic crater, absconded to a mountaintop and lived out her life in solitude. There, she later developed healing powers, which infused and imbued the surrounding rivers with healing properties.
Whether the story is true or just a tale, we’ll leave up to you. What we can say is that Rincón de la Vieja Volcano and its eponymous national park do have mineral-rich, volcano-fed, natural hot springs and that the hot springs are rumored to have restorative properties.
And if a soak in the hot springs (and a slather with volcanic mud!) aren’t enough to tempt you up the mountainside, then know that the parks Las Pailas trail is one of our favorite hikes in Costa Rica. Yes, the whole country, not just Guanacaste. That’s because you’ll see things here that you can see nowhere else. We’re talking sights to the tune of boiling mud pots, a mini-volcano, boiling hot springs (not for humans!), belching fumaroles, seasonal waterfalls, and much more.
Rounding out our diverse selection of national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, welcome to a slice of Costa Rican history and a natural wonderland. It’s two-for-one, here!
The park’s main draw is, undoubtedly, what once happened here. Back in the 1800s, shortly after Central America’s independence from Spain, filibusters arrived to annex Costa Rica. Armed with funds and colonialist attitudes, they hoped to claim the new nations for themselves. Costa Rica had other plans and here, on the site of what is now Santa Rosa National Park, brave Costa Ricans sacrificed their lives and won a pivotal battle against the filibusters, forcing them into Nicaragua and points further north (where Walker was eventually executed).
Today, you can walk the old battlefield and then head out into the park’s rugged sights, which include sea turtle nesting sites, tropical dry forest, and biodiversity that houses 4,000+ butterfly species, over a hundred mammals, and 250 bird species – more than one-quarter of Costa Rica’s 924+ bird species!
Stay amidst the wonder, the sights, and the sites:
Sometimes, you just need your own penthouse. And when that sometimes feels like right now, the penthouse Crystal Sands 504 delivers with direct Langosta Beach and Pacific Ocean views, stretching as far as your eyes can see. From your private balcony, you can spot pelicans, passing sailboats, and even the occasional breaching whale or frolicking dolphin…
You’ll love this home’s private hot tub (on the balcony!), breezy interiors, and a gourmet kitchen – all the better, when paired with the full-sized gas grill. And everywhere – even from the bedrooms – you’ll be able to enjoy your private panoramas. Welcome to paradise!
What if your vacation home came not just with jungle views, convenience (it’s walking distance to Tamarindo), luxury finishes, and a touch of paradise, but also with a beach club membership?
Welcome to Ibis #7, a second-floor condo that does, indeed, come with a beach club membership. And not just any beach club, but Langosta Beach Club, complete with a full fitness center, Pilates and yoga studio, a French restaurant, a great bar with a spectacular ocean view, and a large infinity-edge pool looking out at the warm Pacific.

When it comes to Tamarindo rentals, activities, restaurants, and more, there’s not always a lot of focus on budget options. And yet, plenty of travelers enjoy Tamarindo on a budget.
From the tightest budgets to more of a we-have-a-specific-budget approach to travel, Tamarindo is very accommodating. Because here, there are tons of free, almost free, and inexpensive things to do. Things you’ll love to do. There are lots of tips to lower your food costs (while still enjoying the heck out of your vacation eats). And there are plenty of Tamarindo condos for rent that invite you to enjoy the good life without spending a fortune.
Here are a few of our on-the-ground, we-have-budgets-too suggestions for enjoying Tamarindo on a budget:
Tamarindo is a great choice for budget travelers! There are tons of free or nearly free things to do in this beachside community. Paired with some on-budget Tamarindo rentals (with kitchens, to lower food costs!) and some of our top budget eats (below), and you’ll be well on your way to a champagne vacation at beer-budget costs. Because why wouldn’t you, when you can?
It’s no secret that Tamarindo is a world-renowned surf destination. It’s a little bit of a secret that you don’t need to splash out to splash into our waves.
If you want to go completely free, then try your hand at body boarding. Choose a beach with smallish waves – beginner Tamarindo surf spots are the best choice – and a sandy floor bottom, and you’ll be well on your way to a great day in the sand. Level it up and buy a $15 boogie board at almost any local grocery store or shop or, if you want to get the full experience, you can rent a surfboard starting around $20/day.
Tamarindo’s “estuary ferry” connects northern Tamarindo Beach to southern Playa Grande, right near Panga’s Restaurant. This iconic Tamarindo fun is just $1 to ride and, once you’re over on the Playa Grande side, you’re greeted with new surf waves, new beaches to explore, and new miles to walk.
Speaking of Playa Grande, did you know that Las Baulas National Marine Park (home to Playa Grande) is one of the world’s important leatherback sea turtle nesting sites? Nesting and egg-hatching can be hit-or-miss but ask around shortly before or while you’re in town; if the leatherbacks are here, locals will know! And it’s just $25 to access the national park for a night nesting tour.
There’s nothing more “beach vacation” than simply claiming your spot on the sand, digging your toes in, and watching the sun make its fiery descent behind the horizon, setting the sky ablaze in a rainbow of pinks, peaches, oranges, and purples.
And there’s nothing more “Tamarindo beach vacation” than following up that toes-in-the-sand sunset with toes-in-the-sand fire dancing – fire dancing spectating, that is! TamaOnda (great food, by the way) is a favorite site for nightly fire dancing shows, hosted from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. It’s going to be one of your favorite things!
“Budget” is a relative term, but there are ways to beach-hop around Tamarindo without splashing out on a rental car. Yes, we’re talking Tamarindo rentals of a different stripe!
If you’re relatively intrepid and can stand the heat, consider a beach cruiser (banana) bike rental: For $15 per day, you can rent a cruiser that’ll take you to beaches as far as you can pedal. Level it up with an electric bike or scooter rental. Or, if you just want to sit back and enjoy the ride, consider hiring a local driver for a day; while the cost is higher (think $100+), you can get a lot of sightseeing in when you’re driving!
Tip: Be sure to check out all of our favorite Tamarindo-area beaches for a beach-hopping day.
Don’t believe the hype: there are plenty of inexpensive places to eat and budget restaurants in Tamarindo. That said, we’re not going to name them here. (Things are always changing AND there are so many, they’d need their own post.)
What we will tell you is that, in addition to budget restaurants, there are tons of cheap things to eat in Tamarindo. Here are a few of our can’t-miss favorites:
Spend just an hour on the beach and you’re likely to see one of Tamarindo’s “coconut guys” – enterprising Costa Ricans who collect fresh, young coconuts daily and sell them, ice cold. Buy one for about $1-$2 and the coconut guy will lop off the top with a machete, insert a straw, and hand you the tastiest coconut water you’ve ever had.
No those sodas! In Costa Rica, soda refers to a homestyle eatery, similar to a diner only a lot smaller. (Think zero to four tables, typically. The bigger the soda, the more they’re marketing to the tourist crowd…) Find the right soda and you can dine on a typical Costa Rican feast – rice, beans, salad/veggies, sweet plantains, and your favorite protein (usually fish, chicken, beef, pork, or eggs) – for $5-$7.
If you want to blend cultural attraction with cheap eats, then look no further than the Tamarindo farmer’s market, or fería, held Fridays in Playa Grande and Saturdays in Tamarindo. In addition to super inexpensive fruits and vegetables – grab a bunch to try! – you’ll also find inexpensive prepared foods, including stuffed empanadas, tortillas, and chorreadas (a corn-and-cheese tortilla, very filling!).
If you didn’t make it to the Tamarindo farmer’s market, then don’t miss the Tamarindo Night Market, open Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition to lots of local artisan goods for sale, you’ll find food trucks and street food vendors serving everything from kebobs on a stick and cheesy pizza slices to pulled BBQ and traditional arepas.
When do budget Tamarindo rentals feel like upscale Tamarindo rentals? When you stay at Ibis Condo #10, a gorgeous penthouse condo located across the street from the luxurious Langosta Beach Club and spectacular Playa Langosta.
Welcome to this lovely home-away-from-home, which is located in an exclusive, small, and gated community with just ten condos. In addition to airy interiors, gorgeous local woods, a gourmet kitchen, and other incredible amenities, you’ll also have free access to Langosta Beach Club, where you can swim, lounge, and dine.
Monte Perla #10 stands out as one of our top Tamarindo rentals for discerning travelers on a budget. Here, overlooking the sparkling Tamarindo Bay, this little corner of paradise offers all the luxury amenities of a palatial vacation home – including ocean views from every room!
Additionally, you’re located just a short walk to downtown Tamarindo and all its myriad attractions, amenities, and services. (Walking or taxi/Ubering is a great way to save on your transportation costs, too.) And yet, Monte Perla #10 is still a peaceful getaway and homey respite, with an outdoor patio and sitting area, custom granite countertops, custom local wood furnishings, a resort pool & sun plaza, and many other upscale details.

In our experience, food is one of the greatest and most enjoyable features of travel. And if you’re anything like us – from a casual taster to full-on foodie – then you’re going to love all the Costa Rica tropical fruits that are in store!
Keep in mind that Costa Rican fruits are highly seasonal and, despite how small our country is, fruit seasons do vary by region. So, while you may hear about dozens of fruits you’d like to try, know that only a third to a quarter of them will be available in a single region, at any given time.
The only solution: Visit again. And again. And again! Until you’ve hit on all the seasons and sampled all the Costa Rica tropical fruits. And now, a few of our favorites to add to your list:
Also known as purple mombin and hog plum – so appetizing, we know! – jocote (pronounced hoe-coe-tay) are a cousin of the cashew (who knew?!) and one of Costa Rica’s favorite fruits!
Jocotes may be eaten either green (unripe), pintones (partially ripe), or ripe. You’ll know which you’re getting because green jocotes are, quite literally, green; ripe jocotes, on the other hand, slowly transition from green to red to orange. (When they’re soft and orange, they’re at peak ripeness.)
When to Eat Jocote: High rainy season, typically July through October.
How to Eat Jocote: If you’re sampling green jocotes, cut them open and add a squeeze of lemon juice and a bit of salt. Going for ripe jocotes? Eat them as they are, just avoid the pit!
We swear that guánabana (pronounced gwah-nah-bah-nah) tastes like pear ice cream, if pear ice cream were a fruit! It’s sweet, it’s creamy, it’s white, and it’s heavenly… as we said, ice cream!
You can’t mistake this popular fruit, which is green and sized anywhere between a softball and an American football – only spikey! Look for one that has a bit of give (but isn’t squishy); that’s when you know you’ve found just the right ripeness.
When to Eat Guanábana: Soursop is in season almost year-round in Costa Rica so, no matter when you visit, you’ll likely find it at a farmer’s market stand. (Most vendors sell it whole or, given its size, in easier-to-handle pre-cut chunks of one to two pounds.)
How to Eat Guanábana: We’re not going to sugar-coat it; breaking down a soursop, with all its many seeds, takes a while. But, since the seeds are large and black (in contrast to the white fruit) and the skin peels away easily, it’s a fairly simple process. From there, throw into a blender with a bit of water or milk (we prefer milk, so creamy!) and enjoy it as a smoothie.

You may think you’ve had mango before, but chances are good that you haven’t had this mango. We’re talking mango so juicy, it literally runs down your chin when you bite in. Mango so sweet and velvety, it’ll make your toes curl…
Costa Rican manga is pretty close to a perfect fruit. Note that we have specified manga, not mango: In Costa Rica, mango is a wilder, often more fibrous variety, while manga (pronounced mahn-gah) is silky smooth. (There are many, many varieties, too!)
When to Eat Manga: They’re available year-round in Costa Rica but mangos really hit their peak during the dry season (think: December to May), when more varieties are available and you can buy them for as little as 25 U.S. cents per pound!
How to Eat Manga: Believe it or not, when mango is fully ripe, you can peel it (almost like a banana!). Simply cut a shallow X (about 2 inches/5 cms long) on its top end and peel. You’ll peel away a small amount of flesh but manga is cheap and this method is infinitely faster than any other. From there, simply cut away from the core – or eat like an apple!
It would barely be hyperbole to call mangostán (pronounced mahn-goe-stahn) heaven on earth. And we do mean barely. There’s almost nothing like it!
Purple and about the size of a plum – and eerily similar to caimito, or star apple, another (but not quite equal, if we’re playing favorites…) Costa Rican fruit you should try! – mangosteen is often referred to as the Queen of Fruits. That’s Queen of the World. Because as we said – heaven.
When to Eat Mangosteen: Mangosteen has a very short season in Costa Rica, usually peaking for a few weeks in the middle of the rainy season (July/August).
How to Eat Mangosteen: Grab a sharp knife and slit that baby open! You’ll reveal the inner pods, which are fleshy and white. Many of the larger pods have seeds, which you’ll want to remove. Now, eat, eat, eat!

A deviation from what many consider a fruit, pejibaye (pronounced peh-hee-bi-yay) are fruit from a particular palm tree. And when we say fruit, we mean a starchy, nutty one that eats a bit like yucca mixed with warm roasted chestnuts.
You’ll find pejibaye in supermarkets and farmer’s markets all around Costa Rica: They’re usually sitting in a vat of water, where you can pick your own. (They’re all ripe so just grab whatever looks good to the eye.)
When to Eat Pejibaye: Peach palm fruit is available almost everywhere, year-round. You won’t have trouble finding this one!
How to Eat Pejibaye: Do yourself a favor and do not buy raw pejibaye. Instead, always opt for the pre-cooked fruits, which you’ll peel (use a knife to score an x-opening) and separate from the center seed. Most Costa Ricans top with a small dollop of mayonnaise, which helps cut the dry fibrousness (it’s a word!) of the fruit.
Welcome to the world of weird-but-amaaaazing fruits. Granadilla (pronounced grah-nah-dee-jah) is what Costa Rica calls passion fruit – well, one of the passion fruits!
The truth is that there are several kinds of edible passion fruit in Costa Rica; granadilla is the sweet version, which you eat with a spoon, and maracuyá (pronounced mahr-ah-coo-jah) is a tarter variety that’s blended into drinks. (The other varieties are a little harder to find commercially.)
When to Eat Passion Fruit: Granadilla is available year-round in Costa Rica. You’ll know it by its almost crisp, orange outer shell (similar to a candy coating) and tiny white freckles; its tart twin, maracuyá, is much softer and prone to forming depressions in the skin, when squeezed.
How to Eat Passion Fruit: Simply break it in half and eat with a spoon! The gel-covered seeds are a textural adjustment but the sweet fruit and crunchy seeds are a local favorite!
Whether you’re venturing off the beaten path or sticking firmly to it, we can help you make the most of your time here – even and especially if you’re traveling to Costa Rica on a budget. We’ll make you feel at home, everywhere and anywhere you find yourself adventuring.
We offer everything from cozy two-bedroom condos to well-priced family vacation rentals equipped with swimming pools, a fully equipped kitchen, and so much more. Search our inventory to find your perfect vacation home!
Have you ever heard that Costa Rica is not a “budget destination”? You’ve heard right. But what that usually means is that Costa Rica is a challenge to shoestring budgets because traveling Costa Rica on a budget is possible. And not just possible, but very doable.
Certainly, you’ll have to get a little creative. And you may have to make a few swaps of this for that. And you’ll more frequently choose a free beach day or a $10 pp national park hike over a $150 pp tour day. But you can and will travel, explore, and enjoy the wilds and wiles of Costa Rica on a budget.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
In Costa Rica, all restaurant service taxes (13%) and a basic tip (10%) are supposed to be included in the prices listed on the menu. In other words, if a dish is listed at ¢5,000 (about $7.50), then the final price should be ¢5,000 – not ¢5,000 + 13% service + 10% tip.
That said, some restaurants list their prices without the service and tip. So, do your budget a favor and always check the menu (usually at the bottom/footer) for text along the lines of “Los precios incluyen I.V.I.” (Prices include I.V.I., or the service + tip tax) If you see something along the lines of “Los precios no incluyen I.V.I.”, then the 23% additional is not included. Some restaurants will include the 13% service fee but not the 10% tip; in this case, the 10% tip is not optional and will always be added onto your final bill.
This one doesn’t apply to everyone – but not for budget reasons! Because, without a doubt, rental cars are a big expense in Costa Rica. (More on that, in a minute.) But first, a stipulation: If you’re an adventurous, independent traveler who loves venturing the road less traveled (literally), even if you’re traveling Costa Rica on a budget, then you will absolutely want a car. And make it a 4WD because you’re going to need it.
But if you’re looking to save some dough, don’t. Here’s why: You may find a great deal online for a rental car. You may also have a credit card that you are absolutely positive will act as your third-party liability car insurance (required by law). And yet, most rental car agencies will be absolutely positive that it does not.
You can fight the good fight – and some people win – but unless you’re one of the lucky ones, you will be asked (subtext: required) to pay an additional $30-$60 per day in insurance – and that’s not even full rental car insurance! Want zero liability and roadside assistance? Tack on an additional $20+ per day. In other words, it adds up.
And now, you’re wondering about rental car alternatives? You can also ask your travel concierge to find you an all-in rental car price to fit your budget OR you can use a combination of airport transportation, private drivers/taxis/Uber, public buses, bike rentals, and walking, depending on where you’re headed. (Get in touch and we’ll be happy to help you figure it all out!)
Unless you’re a true shoestring traveler staying in hostel dorms, then you’re probably working with a modest accommodation budget (say, about $100/night/room).
If that’s the case, then consider staying in a vacation home and not a hotel. Here’s why: In addition to offering more space, greater privacy, and just-for-you amenities, private vacation homes are often less expensive than their hotel counterparts. For example, several of our Tamarindo vacation homes are under $100/night per bedroom – and they offer a lot more than a bedroom.
Bonus: You can also save money prepping meals at home in your vacation home’s fully equipped kitchen. Even if you’re prepping just your morning coffee, breakfast, and a quick lunch sandwich, you’ll save over dining out (even on the cheap) for every meal.
While we’re on the topic of traveling Costa Rica on a budget, consider Sunrise #4, a luxury, oceanview penthouse across the street from the beach. Not only that, but its location is ideal (especially if you want to ditch the rental car): Situated in Tamarindo – one of the most accessible, amenity-rich beach towns in the county – Sunrise #4 puts you close to everything.
And, did we mention? Starting at well under $100/night per bedroom, Sunrise #4 also offers a spacious terrace and BBQ area, a gorgeous resort pool, and powdery beach, just across the street. You cannot beat the location, the home, or the value!
One of the biggest rip-offs in Costa Rica? Currency exchange counters. Whether they’re at the airport, the grocery store, or a local souvenir market, chances are very good that you’ll get hosed by the exchange rate.
Instead, always skip the exchange step and let the banks do it for you: Withdraw Costa Rican colones (pronounced co-lo-nays) from any ATM within your network. What ATMs are in your network, you ask? Almost any ATM marked ATH (a toda hora, or all-hours) is equipped to handle international ATM cards; additionally, all ATMs will be marked with network stickers, ex. MasterCard and Cirrus/Plus.
That said, you probably won’t need a lot of cash. Costa Rica’s credit card acceptance network is wide – many taxi drivers can even accept credit cards! – and most payments are contactless. That said, cash is required for tips, small artisan souvenir purchases, oceanfront coconut water (fresh from the coconut), and other minor purchases.
One of the best ways to save money when traveling Costa Rica on a budget is to savor (and fill up on) a dose of Costa Rican culture is at a local soda. (Note: Not a fizzy drink.)
Sodas are Costa Rica’s version of the mom-and-pop or corner diner, serving up hearty, homemade, and traditional fare. The most filling and typical meal: a casado, which “marries” (casado means “married”) many of Costa Rica’s most traditional dishes, including your choice of protein (beef, chicken, pork, or eggs/fried cheese for the vegetarians), rice, beans, salad, and fried plantains, often served with a small fruit juice. For $3-$5 (at local sodas, not tourist traps), you cannot beat this cheap and filling meal!
For luxury on a budget, you cannot beat the lovely and luxe Casa Limoncillo. Located just a 5-minute drive to Tamarindo’s sand and surf, this modern home offers all the amenities. And boy, do well mean ALL of them.
We’ll start by singing the praises of the home’s outdoor rancho, BBQ, and saltwater swimming pool, which offers a gentle retreat and cool respite from the tropical sun. Its neighbor: a fire pit (excellent for star gazing!) and the jungle gym/climbing structure and trampoline of your children’s dreams. And all around: lush gardens, exotic birds, and tropical wildlife. It’s paradise.
Costa Rica’s shoulder season – typically, April/May and November/early December, but it depends on the destination! – is one of our favorite times to travel. Not only will you still have a good chance at great weather (more sunny hours, less rain), but you’ll get a price break on accommodations and, often, certain tours, transportation, and other services that rely on demand.
What’s more – and, granted, this isn’t a budget thing – but shoulder and green season mean fewer tourists, which in turn means more of Costa Rica to yourself. And that, in itself, can feel pretty luxurious. Just imagine having the beach alllll to yourself… Nothing is sweeter!
Whether you’re venturing off the beaten path or sticking firmly to it, we can help you make the most of your time here – even and especially if you’re traveling Costa Rica on a budget. We’ll make you feel at home, everywhere and anywhere you find yourself adventuring.
We offer everything from cozy two-bedroom condos to well-priced family vacation rentals equipped with swimming pools, fully equipped kithen, and so much more. Search our inventory to find your perfect vacation home!
Sometimes, the hardest part of your vacation is simply choosing where to vacation. So, while you’ve likely narrowed down your country of destination (Costa Rica, hurray!), you haven’t yet gotten so far as to whittle down the regions, towns, or places you’d like to stay. Let us offer some inspiration (and a few Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals to consider).
We’re here to help. Because, while Costa Rica appears small by map standards, the country is vast: From high-montane cloud forests and river headwaters to coastal beaches and tropical dry forests, you could spend a lifetime exploring Costa Rica’s diverse sights, enormous biodiversity, and varying terrain.
You have to start somewhere, though. And, as residents of the great province of Guanacaste, we’d like to recommend right here: on Costa Rica’s famed Gold Coast, home to pink shell-strewn beaches and howler monkey-filled forests, world-class surf and some of the world’s best sunsets.
So, let’s get right down to it: 10 beachy destinations to submit for consideration. From north to south:
Decades ago, Playas del Coco was the Place to Be in Guanacaste: an oceanfront “city” (your chosen adjective may vary, depending on how big of a city you’re from!) with all the accouterments, from dark-sand beaches and Gulf of Papagayo views to world-class sportfishing and family-friendly swimming spots.
Over the decades, Playas del Coco ceded its vacationer status to clout of a different kind: It became one of Guanacaste’s go-to destinations for expats, particularly those from the United States, Canada, and Europe. The transition has been to Coco’s benefit, ushering in a new age of restaurants, amenities, activities & attractions, and even Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals that appeal both to your standard vacationers and to slow travelers – those who prefer to stay awhile – as well as curious, maybe-someday expats. One thing is for sure: If you come here, prepare to fall a little (or a lot) in love. Coco is undoubtedly and eternally that kind of place!
Tucked into a quiet cove just north of Flamingo Beach, Playa Potrero is that not-quite-hidden but not-quite-discovered destination that creates vacation alchemy: Here, you’re convenient to it all and at the epicenter of all things Costa Rica, and yet you’ll have no trouble carving out a little space all your own.
Once a quiet fishing village, Potrero Beach is now more known for its serene landscapes, which roll back from the crashing Pacific and into Guanacaste’s hills, forests, and diverse wildlife. You’ll probably find yourself spending more time staring out than in, though, because Potrero’s sapphire waters, sun-bleached sands, and kaleidoscopic sunsets demand both your attention and your devotion. It won’t be hard to comply, though, we promise!
Both beautiful and idyllic, Flamingo Beach occupies a sun-splashed and sandy crescent between Playa Potrero and Brasilito. Here, where almost a mile of powder-puff, super-soft blonde sands span the oceanfront, you’ll want to spend every minute with your toes in the Pacific.
Because Flamingo Beach is just this side of mesmerizing: The water is so clear, you can often see fish and rays swimming at your feet. The forest hums with the calls of howler monkeys and wild parrots. And then, there’s the new Flamingo Marina – one of the country’s newest, largest, and most luxurious… All this, on oceanfront so tranquil, you’ll have no trouble taking your afternoon nap. Luckily, many of our favorite Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals in Flamingo offer hammocks, shaded pool terraces, and other perfect napping spots!
Long beloved and easily one of Costa Rica’s most talked-about beaches, Playa Conchal is the kind of place that decorates postcards – only, this place is real and no Photoshop is required. So named for the eponymous shells (conchales) that decorate its beachfront, Playa Conchal (“Shell Beach”) is just this side of unique: an oceanside scattered with tiny seashells (not fine sand) and a hue that trends more pink (think rosé, not baby pink) than white or cinnamon.
Of course, Playa Conchal is more than its shell-dappled shoreline: Here, you’ll find gentle surf ideal for wading, snorkeling, and swimming. You’ll find a coast lined with waving palms – the perfect spot to set up your beach chairs. But, fair warning: You’ll find other beachgoers, too, as Conchal is one of Costa Rica’s more visited beaches, in part thanks to the resorts that line its shores.
Bonus: One community (see Casa Moderna, below) is home to a 7,021-yard, par-71 championship golf course! (Tee time reservations recommended.)
Just as its name suggests, Casa Moderna is a beautiful and modern luxury vacation home – one of our newest Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals – where clean lines and a beachy color palette let the true star (Costa Rica’s great outdoors) take center stage.
Indeed, Casa Moderna’s soaring ceilings and walls of glass remind you of why you’re here: Lush landscaping recalls Costa Rica’s biodiversity, while shaded outdoor living and a sparkling private pool beckon you to stash away your schedules in exchange for spontaneity and carefree vacationing.
As a guest a Casa Moderna, you’ll also have exclusive access to community amenities, which include a spectacular Beach Club, tee times at a championship golf course, and 24/7 security.
Located just north of Tamarindo – across the estuary and into Las Baulas National Marine Park, Playa Grande is a must-visit for beach lovers, surfers, and wildlife aficionados.
Why, you ask? Let’s start with the obvious: Set on a quiet stretch of cinnamon-sand beach, Playa Grande unfolds over some of the quietest beachfront you’ll find near Tamarindo. What you will hear? Crashing surf! Because Playa Grande is one of the area’s best spots for intermediate and advanced surfers. And then, there’s Las Baulas National Marine Park, one of the world’s critically important nesting sites for leatherback turtles.
Note: To get to Playa Grande, always drive or take the lancha (about $1) across the estuary, as there are crocodiles in the river.
Famous for a reason, Tamarindo is a seaside locale with city amenities and small-town charm – and everything you need for an incredible vacation. Starting with some of the best Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals – everything from budget-friendly, ocean-adjacent condos to full-on luxury mansions. The choice is yours!
Whatever you choose, your vacation here begins on Tamarindo’s soft, white sands and famous surf, which carves out waves suitable for both beginners and advanced surfers alike. It transitions into the town’s incredible array of restaurants – everything from the freshest caught seafood and juicy burgers to eclectic food trucks and vegan feasts. And then, there’s the nightlife and the shopping and the tours and the spectacular sunsets… Because Tamarindo really is an anything-goes and everything-you-hope-for kind of place. Enjoy!
Just a few minutes south of downtown Tamarindo, Villa Estrella Azul occupies that perfect location: Convenient to every amenity, and yet somehow removed – far from the crowds and away from it all, in one of our Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals so exclusive, it feels more private boutique hotel than single-family home.
Villa Estrella Azul’s eight luxury bedrooms, gourmet chef’s-ready kitchen, and custom infinity pool are just the beginning. This stunning home is just steps to Tamarindo Beach and owns one of our favorite entertainment spaces in the area: In your private backyard, the pool slowly transitions from shallow to deep. Shady verandahs abound. You have your very own, private yoga pavilion.
There’s even ping-pong and outdoor dining, which pair perfectly with the gas grill and brick pizza oven. Catch a quick match while your catch-of-the-day sizzles to grilled perfection, then enjoy every bite at your leisure. Afterward, enjoy a lazy dip in the pool or a nap in the shade. The choice is yours, even if it is a tough decision.
Both extraordinary and exclusive, Hacienda Pinilla is a master-planned community about 3.5 miles south of Tamarindo. But it’s so much more than that: To many, Hacienda Pinilla is paradise. It’s ecological blue-flag beaches and miles of hiking trails, championship golf and tennis beneath the palms.
This is where Costa Rican heritage meets vacation dreams – where natural beauty abounds and adventure runs wild, where relaxation goes upscale and recreation beckons around every corner. It’s both an escape from life and an escape to life: to everything you love and crave while you’re here, sitting on a quiet beach, your toes in the Pacific and a spectacular Beach Club and resort pool at your back.
There’s a certain expectation set when you make your motto, “no shirt, no shoes, Nosara.” It’s an expectation that Nosara is happy to fulfill, as this laid-back beach town most often sheds its shoes and shirts for a jump into the waves. Indeed, Nosara is best known (although not wholly known… keep reading!) for its stellar surf, which lures surfers from around the world.
And yet, while Nosara could undoubtedly rest on its surfing laurels, it’s doesn’t. This tranquil hamlet also goes hard on wellness, leaning in to yoga retreats, clean living, and active travel that gets you out the door and into the great beyond: To Playa Ostional, the world’s second-most important nesting site for olive ridley sea turtles; to wildlife-watching at the Nosara Biological Reserve and Nosara Wildlife Rescue; to the tropical rainforests (rare, in our area) of the Monte Alto Reserve; to inshore and deep-sea fishing for snook, mahi-mahi, and other hard fighters; and, of course, to dozens of beaches – some, perfect for surfing and others, more tuned to swimming, snorkeling, and boogie boarding.
Big sister to its neighboring Mal País, Santa Teresa is the kind of bohemian surf town that was once so abundant in Costa Rica. Today, its easy-going vibe and slow pace are hard to find, making Santa Teresa all the more appealing to the laid-back travelers, surfers, and yogis who make their way here.
A former fishing hamlet turned international community, Santa Teresa rose to fame for its legendary surfing waves, including steady left and right breaks that appeal to everyone from beginner to seasoned surfers. (Novices, take heart! Surf instruction is a big part of Santa Teresa’s local economy.) And yet, there are also the reliable kite-surfing winds and warm sportfishing waters, sun-drenched beaches and wildlife-rich, rocky tidepools. There are zip-line canopy tours and ATV rides, oceanview yoga and long nature hikes. There’s a little bit of everything, if you’re only willing to deviate off the more beaten path.
Note: Santa Teresa is located on the southern Nicoya Peninsula (note: geographically in Puntarenas Province, not Guanacaste!), which is one of Costa Rica’s more rugged (read: less developed) destinations. Many businesses still shut down during high rainy season (September/October) and you will need a 4WD vehicle from May-November (recommended December-April, too!).
(p.s. Sorry for all the parentheses!)
Swing around the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, and you’ll reach endearing Montezuma, home to some of the wildest, most authentic, and genuinely inviting vibes north of the Osa Peninsula. Welcome to a favorite spot for artists and yogis, surfers and escape artists – to a destination where life moves slower, your cares melt upon entry, and the clock ticks backward.
Indeed, Montezuma is that nature-loving, take-it-one-minute-at-a-time kind of place that bids you give in to the moment. Step out onto white-sand beach, kick off your sandals, and maybe run into surf (check out that right-point break!). Catch a yoga class or set off on a snorkeling expedition to idyllic Isla Tortuga or Curu Wildlife Refuge. Kayak into the gulf or take a hike through Cabo Blanco Reserve. Truly, Montezuma is where you go when you don’t want to be required to go anywhere: Just be. Enjoy the moment. Follow a whim. And enjoy a side of Costa Rica that only the adventurous get to see.
Whether you’re venturing off the beaten path or sticking firmly to it, our Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals make you feel at home, everywhere and anywhere you find yourself adventuring.
We offer everything from cozy two-bedroom condos to 8+ bedroom private resorts equipped with ocean-view infinity pools, daily meals, and so much more. Search our inventory to find your perfect home!
