Have you ever heard that Costa Rica is not a “budget destination”? You’ve heard right. But what that usually means is that Costa Rica is a challenge to shoestring budgets because traveling Costa Rica on a budget is possible. And not just possible, but very doable.
Certainly, you’ll have to get a little creative. And you may have to make a few swaps of this for that. And you’ll more frequently choose a free beach day or a $10 pp national park hike over a $150 pp tour day. But you can and will travel, explore, and enjoy the wilds and wiles of Costa Rica on a budget.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
In Costa Rica, all restaurant service taxes (13%) and a basic tip (10%) are supposed to be included in the prices listed on the menu. In other words, if a dish is listed at ¢5,000 (about $7.50), then the final price should be ¢5,000 – not ¢5,000 + 13% service + 10% tip.
That said, some restaurants list their prices without the service and tip. So, do your budget a favor and always check the menu (usually at the bottom/footer) for text along the lines of “Los precios incluyen I.V.I.” (Prices include I.V.I., or the service + tip tax) If you see something along the lines of “Los precios no incluyen I.V.I.”, then the 23% additional is not included. Some restaurants will include the 13% service fee but not the 10% tip; in this case, the 10% tip is not optional and will always be added onto your final bill.
This one doesn’t apply to everyone – but not for budget reasons! Because, without a doubt, rental cars are a big expense in Costa Rica. (More on that, in a minute.) But first, a stipulation: If you’re an adventurous, independent traveler who loves venturing the road less traveled (literally), even if you’re traveling Costa Rica on a budget, then you will absolutely want a car. And make it a 4WD because you’re going to need it.
But if you’re looking to save some dough, don’t. Here’s why: You may find a great deal online for a rental car. You may also have a credit card that you are absolutely positive will act as your third-party liability car insurance (required by law). And yet, most rental car agencies will be absolutely positive that it does not.
You can fight the good fight – and some people win – but unless you’re one of the lucky ones, you will be asked (subtext: required) to pay an additional $30-$60 per day in insurance – and that’s not even full rental car insurance! Want zero liability and roadside assistance? Tack on an additional $20+ per day. In other words, it adds up.
And now, you’re wondering about rental car alternatives? You can also ask your travel concierge to find you an all-in rental car price to fit your budget OR you can use a combination of airport transportation, private drivers/taxis/Uber, public buses, bike rentals, and walking, depending on where you’re headed. (Get in touch and we’ll be happy to help you figure it all out!)
Unless you’re a true shoestring traveler staying in hostel dorms, then you’re probably working with a modest accommodation budget (say, about $100/night/room).
If that’s the case, then consider staying in a vacation home and not a hotel. Here’s why: In addition to offering more space, greater privacy, and just-for-you amenities, private vacation homes are often less expensive than their hotel counterparts. For example, several of our Tamarindo vacation homes are under $100/night per bedroom – and they offer a lot more than a bedroom.
Bonus: You can also save money prepping meals at home in your vacation home’s fully equipped kitchen. Even if you’re prepping just your morning coffee, breakfast, and a quick lunch sandwich, you’ll save over dining out (even on the cheap) for every meal.
While we’re on the topic of traveling Costa Rica on a budget, consider Sunrise #4, a luxury, oceanview penthouse across the street from the beach. Not only that, but its location is ideal (especially if you want to ditch the rental car): Situated in Tamarindo – one of the most accessible, amenity-rich beach towns in the county – Sunrise #4 puts you close to everything.
And, did we mention? Starting at well under $100/night per bedroom, Sunrise #4 also offers a spacious terrace and BBQ area, a gorgeous resort pool, and powdery beach, just across the street. You cannot beat the location, the home, or the value!
One of the biggest rip-offs in Costa Rica? Currency exchange counters. Whether they’re at the airport, the grocery store, or a local souvenir market, chances are very good that you’ll get hosed by the exchange rate.
Instead, always skip the exchange step and let the banks do it for you: Withdraw Costa Rican colones (pronounced co-lo-nays) from any ATM within your network. What ATMs are in your network, you ask? Almost any ATM marked ATH (a toda hora, or all-hours) is equipped to handle international ATM cards; additionally, all ATMs will be marked with network stickers, ex. MasterCard and Cirrus/Plus.
That said, you probably won’t need a lot of cash. Costa Rica’s credit card acceptance network is wide – many taxi drivers can even accept credit cards! – and most payments are contactless. That said, cash is required for tips, small artisan souvenir purchases, oceanfront coconut water (fresh from the coconut), and other minor purchases.
One of the best ways to save money when traveling Costa Rica on a budget is to savor (and fill up on) a dose of Costa Rican culture is at a local soda. (Note: Not a fizzy drink.)
Sodas are Costa Rica’s version of the mom-and-pop or corner diner, serving up hearty, homemade, and traditional fare. The most filling and typical meal: a casado, which “marries” (casado means “married”) many of Costa Rica’s most traditional dishes, including your choice of protein (beef, chicken, pork, or eggs/fried cheese for the vegetarians), rice, beans, salad, and fried plantains, often served with a small fruit juice. For $3-$5 (at local sodas, not tourist traps), you cannot beat this cheap and filling meal!
For luxury on a budget, you cannot beat the lovely and luxe Casa Limoncillo. Located just a 5-minute drive to Tamarindo’s sand and surf, this modern home offers all the amenities. And boy, do well mean ALL of them.
We’ll start by singing the praises of the home’s outdoor rancho, BBQ, and saltwater swimming pool, which offers a gentle retreat and cool respite from the tropical sun. Its neighbor: a fire pit (excellent for star gazing!) and the jungle gym/climbing structure and trampoline of your children’s dreams. And all around: lush gardens, exotic birds, and tropical wildlife. It’s paradise.
Costa Rica’s shoulder season – typically, April/May and November/early December, but it depends on the destination! – is one of our favorite times to travel. Not only will you still have a good chance at great weather (more sunny hours, less rain), but you’ll get a price break on accommodations and, often, certain tours, transportation, and other services that rely on demand.
What’s more – and, granted, this isn’t a budget thing – but shoulder and green season mean fewer tourists, which in turn means more of Costa Rica to yourself. And that, in itself, can feel pretty luxurious. Just imagine having the beach alllll to yourself… Nothing is sweeter!
Whether you’re venturing off the beaten path or sticking firmly to it, we can help you make the most of your time here – even and especially if you’re traveling Costa Rica on a budget. We’ll make you feel at home, everywhere and anywhere you find yourself adventuring.
We offer everything from cozy two-bedroom condos to well-priced family vacation rentals equipped with swimming pools, fully equipped kithen, and so much more. Search our inventory to find your perfect vacation home!
Sometimes, the hardest part of your vacation is simply choosing where to vacation. So, while you’ve likely narrowed down your country of destination (Costa Rica, hurray!), you haven’t yet gotten so far as to whittle down the regions, towns, or places you’d like to stay. Let us offer some inspiration (and a few Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals to consider).
We’re here to help. Because, while Costa Rica appears small by map standards, the country is vast: From high-montane cloud forests and river headwaters to coastal beaches and tropical dry forests, you could spend a lifetime exploring Costa Rica’s diverse sights, enormous biodiversity, and varying terrain.
You have to start somewhere, though. And, as residents of the great province of Guanacaste, we’d like to recommend right here: on Costa Rica’s famed Gold Coast, home to pink shell-strewn beaches and howler monkey-filled forests, world-class surf and some of the world’s best sunsets.
So, let’s get right down to it: 10 beachy destinations to submit for consideration. From north to south:
Decades ago, Playas del Coco was the Place to Be in Guanacaste: an oceanfront “city” (your chosen adjective may vary, depending on how big of a city you’re from!) with all the accouterments, from dark-sand beaches and Gulf of Papagayo views to world-class sportfishing and family-friendly swimming spots.
Over the decades, Playas del Coco ceded its vacationer status to clout of a different kind: It became one of Guanacaste’s go-to destinations for expats, particularly those from the United States, Canada, and Europe. The transition has been to Coco’s benefit, ushering in a new age of restaurants, amenities, activities & attractions, and even Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals that appeal both to your standard vacationers and to slow travelers – those who prefer to stay awhile – as well as curious, maybe-someday expats. One thing is for sure: If you come here, prepare to fall a little (or a lot) in love. Coco is undoubtedly and eternally that kind of place!
Tucked into a quiet cove just north of Flamingo Beach, Playa Potrero is that not-quite-hidden but not-quite-discovered destination that creates vacation alchemy: Here, you’re convenient to it all and at the epicenter of all things Costa Rica, and yet you’ll have no trouble carving out a little space all your own.
Once a quiet fishing village, Potrero Beach is now more known for its serene landscapes, which roll back from the crashing Pacific and into Guanacaste’s hills, forests, and diverse wildlife. You’ll probably find yourself spending more time staring out than in, though, because Potrero’s sapphire waters, sun-bleached sands, and kaleidoscopic sunsets demand both your attention and your devotion. It won’t be hard to comply, though, we promise!
Both beautiful and idyllic, Flamingo Beach occupies a sun-splashed and sandy crescent between Playa Potrero and Brasilito. Here, where almost a mile of powder-puff, super-soft blonde sands span the oceanfront, you’ll want to spend every minute with your toes in the Pacific.
Because Flamingo Beach is just this side of mesmerizing: The water is so clear, you can often see fish and rays swimming at your feet. The forest hums with the calls of howler monkeys and wild parrots. And then, there’s the new Flamingo Marina – one of the country’s newest, largest, and most luxurious… All this, on oceanfront so tranquil, you’ll have no trouble taking your afternoon nap. Luckily, many of our favorite Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals in Flamingo offer hammocks, shaded pool terraces, and other perfect napping spots!
Long beloved and easily one of Costa Rica’s most talked-about beaches, Playa Conchal is the kind of place that decorates postcards – only, this place is real and no Photoshop is required. So named for the eponymous shells (conchales) that decorate its beachfront, Playa Conchal (“Shell Beach”) is just this side of unique: an oceanside scattered with tiny seashells (not fine sand) and a hue that trends more pink (think rosé, not baby pink) than white or cinnamon.
Of course, Playa Conchal is more than its shell-dappled shoreline: Here, you’ll find gentle surf ideal for wading, snorkeling, and swimming. You’ll find a coast lined with waving palms – the perfect spot to set up your beach chairs. But, fair warning: You’ll find other beachgoers, too, as Conchal is one of Costa Rica’s more visited beaches, in part thanks to the resorts that line its shores.
Bonus: One community (see Casa Moderna, below) is home to a 7,021-yard, par-71 championship golf course! (Tee time reservations recommended.)
Just as its name suggests, Casa Moderna is a beautiful and modern luxury vacation home – one of our newest Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals – where clean lines and a beachy color palette let the true star (Costa Rica’s great outdoors) take center stage.
Indeed, Casa Moderna’s soaring ceilings and walls of glass remind you of why you’re here: Lush landscaping recalls Costa Rica’s biodiversity, while shaded outdoor living and a sparkling private pool beckon you to stash away your schedules in exchange for spontaneity and carefree vacationing.
As a guest a Casa Moderna, you’ll also have exclusive access to community amenities, which include a spectacular Beach Club, tee times at a championship golf course, and 24/7 security.
Located just north of Tamarindo – across the estuary and into Las Baulas National Marine Park, Playa Grande is a must-visit for beach lovers, surfers, and wildlife aficionados.
Why, you ask? Let’s start with the obvious: Set on a quiet stretch of cinnamon-sand beach, Playa Grande unfolds over some of the quietest beachfront you’ll find near Tamarindo. What you will hear? Crashing surf! Because Playa Grande is one of the area’s best spots for intermediate and advanced surfers. And then, there’s Las Baulas National Marine Park, one of the world’s critically important nesting sites for leatherback turtles.
Note: To get to Playa Grande, always drive or take the lancha (about $1) across the estuary, as there are crocodiles in the river.
Famous for a reason, Tamarindo is a seaside locale with city amenities and small-town charm – and everything you need for an incredible vacation. Starting with some of the best Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals – everything from budget-friendly, ocean-adjacent condos to full-on luxury mansions. The choice is yours!
Whatever you choose, your vacation here begins on Tamarindo’s soft, white sands and famous surf, which carves out waves suitable for both beginners and advanced surfers alike. It transitions into the town’s incredible array of restaurants – everything from the freshest caught seafood and juicy burgers to eclectic food trucks and vegan feasts. And then, there’s the nightlife and the shopping and the tours and the spectacular sunsets… Because Tamarindo really is an anything-goes and everything-you-hope-for kind of place. Enjoy!
Just a few minutes south of downtown Tamarindo, Villa Estrella Azul occupies that perfect location: Convenient to every amenity, and yet somehow removed – far from the crowds and away from it all, in one of our Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals so exclusive, it feels more private boutique hotel than single-family home.
Villa Estrella Azul’s eight luxury bedrooms, gourmet chef’s-ready kitchen, and custom infinity pool are just the beginning. This stunning home is just steps to Tamarindo Beach and owns one of our favorite entertainment spaces in the area: In your private backyard, the pool slowly transitions from shallow to deep. Shady verandahs abound. You have your very own, private yoga pavilion.
There’s even ping-pong and outdoor dining, which pair perfectly with the gas grill and brick pizza oven. Catch a quick match while your catch-of-the-day sizzles to grilled perfection, then enjoy every bite at your leisure. Afterward, enjoy a lazy dip in the pool or a nap in the shade. The choice is yours, even if it is a tough decision.
Both extraordinary and exclusive, Hacienda Pinilla is a master-planned community about 3.5 miles south of Tamarindo. But it’s so much more than that: To many, Hacienda Pinilla is paradise. It’s ecological blue-flag beaches and miles of hiking trails, championship golf and tennis beneath the palms.
This is where Costa Rican heritage meets vacation dreams – where natural beauty abounds and adventure runs wild, where relaxation goes upscale and recreation beckons around every corner. It’s both an escape from life and an escape to life: to everything you love and crave while you’re here, sitting on a quiet beach, your toes in the Pacific and a spectacular Beach Club and resort pool at your back.
There’s a certain expectation set when you make your motto, “no shirt, no shoes, Nosara.” It’s an expectation that Nosara is happy to fulfill, as this laid-back beach town most often sheds its shoes and shirts for a jump into the waves. Indeed, Nosara is best known (although not wholly known… keep reading!) for its stellar surf, which lures surfers from around the world.
And yet, while Nosara could undoubtedly rest on its surfing laurels, it’s doesn’t. This tranquil hamlet also goes hard on wellness, leaning in to yoga retreats, clean living, and active travel that gets you out the door and into the great beyond: To Playa Ostional, the world’s second-most important nesting site for olive ridley sea turtles; to wildlife-watching at the Nosara Biological Reserve and Nosara Wildlife Rescue; to the tropical rainforests (rare, in our area) of the Monte Alto Reserve; to inshore and deep-sea fishing for snook, mahi-mahi, and other hard fighters; and, of course, to dozens of beaches – some, perfect for surfing and others, more tuned to swimming, snorkeling, and boogie boarding.
Big sister to its neighboring Mal País, Santa Teresa is the kind of bohemian surf town that was once so abundant in Costa Rica. Today, its easy-going vibe and slow pace are hard to find, making Santa Teresa all the more appealing to the laid-back travelers, surfers, and yogis who make their way here.
A former fishing hamlet turned international community, Santa Teresa rose to fame for its legendary surfing waves, including steady left and right breaks that appeal to everyone from beginner to seasoned surfers. (Novices, take heart! Surf instruction is a big part of Santa Teresa’s local economy.) And yet, there are also the reliable kite-surfing winds and warm sportfishing waters, sun-drenched beaches and wildlife-rich, rocky tidepools. There are zip-line canopy tours and ATV rides, oceanview yoga and long nature hikes. There’s a little bit of everything, if you’re only willing to deviate off the more beaten path.
Note: Santa Teresa is located on the southern Nicoya Peninsula (note: geographically in Puntarenas Province, not Guanacaste!), which is one of Costa Rica’s more rugged (read: less developed) destinations. Many businesses still shut down during high rainy season (September/October) and you will need a 4WD vehicle from May-November (recommended December-April, too!).
(p.s. Sorry for all the parentheses!)
Swing around the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, and you’ll reach endearing Montezuma, home to some of the wildest, most authentic, and genuinely inviting vibes north of the Osa Peninsula. Welcome to a favorite spot for artists and yogis, surfers and escape artists – to a destination where life moves slower, your cares melt upon entry, and the clock ticks backward.
Indeed, Montezuma is that nature-loving, take-it-one-minute-at-a-time kind of place that bids you give in to the moment. Step out onto white-sand beach, kick off your sandals, and maybe run into surf (check out that right-point break!). Catch a yoga class or set off on a snorkeling expedition to idyllic Isla Tortuga or Curu Wildlife Refuge. Kayak into the gulf or take a hike through Cabo Blanco Reserve. Truly, Montezuma is where you go when you don’t want to be required to go anywhere: Just be. Enjoy the moment. Follow a whim. And enjoy a side of Costa Rica that only the adventurous get to see.
Whether you’re venturing off the beaten path or sticking firmly to it, our Guanacaste, Costa Rica rentals make you feel at home, everywhere and anywhere you find yourself adventuring.
We offer everything from cozy two-bedroom condos to 8+ bedroom private resorts equipped with ocean-view infinity pools, daily meals, and so much more. Search our inventory to find your perfect home!
Tamarindo is the kind of place that families love. In addition to great dining, incredible scenery, and plenty of family-friendly vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, our corner of paradise offers much for families to see, do, and experience together.
Because, whether you’re the kind to tackle adventures – everything from zip lines and volcano-climbing to surfing and ocean kayaking – or more the type to relax at the pool together, Tamarindo is just the kind of place for your family.
And with that in mind, here are a few of our favorite things. Which will become a few of yours?
There’s nothing as quintessential to Tamarindo as surfing. And, while Tamarindo is one of the world’s favorite surfer spots, it’s also surprisingly welcoming to beginners and kids, too. Because yes, there are great challenges to be found but there are also gentle waves and sandy ocean bottoms perfect for your first ride or your hundredth practice. And there’s nothing like seeing the expression on your kid’s face when she catches her very first wave!
If surfing is quintessential to Tamarindo, then canopy zip-lines are the OG Costa Rican adventure. While they’ve been around for decades, this high-flying fun is still just as popular as ever. And that’s because they’re good, safe, family fun! Kids aged 4+ can test their mettle and squeal with delight as they fly through the trees, catch up-close glimpses of wildlife, and experience nature as never before.
Let loose your wild sides on the saddle of an ATV! These all-terrain vehicles easily conquer Costa Rica’s backroads and hillsides, taking you to views and spots you’d have a tough time accessing otherwise. (FYI, most vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Costa Rica are either downtown or on paved hillside roads!) And then, there’s the serious bonus of seeing your kids’ faces light up with joy and exhilaration – the wind in their hair, the breeze at their back, and the wheels beneath their seat.
If surfing isn’t quite your thing but you still want to get out onto a surfboard, then consider stand-up paddleboarding (aka SUP). This wildly popular watersport is both relaxing and more challenging than it looks – you’ll have to check your balance and engage your core, but once you’re up, it’s easy paddling! – and offers some of the most incredible sightseeing and wildlife watching around Tamarindo Bay.
Take a break from the adrenaline and explore a beloved niche of Costa Rican culture: the weekly feria, or farmer’s market, held every Saturday morning. Both adventurous and picky eaters alike will find something love here, from ripe red strawberries and juicy mangos to more exotic fruits, including spiky soursop (guanabana) and hairy red rambutan (mamón chino).
When you seek rest, harmony, and total relaxation, Ibis Condo #1 delivers. One of our favorite family-friendly vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, this cozy condo is just right for small families who seek big amenities and serious oceanfront charm.
Located at the serene and beachfront Langosta Beach Club, this lovely condo is directly across from the beach – and yet, just a 10-minute walk to downtown Tamarindo. It’s the best of both worlds, for travelers who prefer to have one foot in tranquility and the other in the joys of downtown life, from tours and shopping to dining and nightlife.
At Ibis Condo #1, you’ll feel like you’ve entered another world: Sit out on your private terrace, surrounded by forest foliage. Retreat to your condo interiors, warm with local hardwoods, tropical ambiance, and modern touches. Prepare a meal in the fully equipped kitchen, read a book outdoors in the shade, or simply spend time with your travel companions. That’s why you’re here, after all!
Your rental also includes full membership privileges at Langosta Beach Club, with its beachfront, infinity-edge swimming pool overlooking the warm Pacific, plus upscale amenities including a French restaurant, full fitness center, Pilates and yoga studio, and a great bar with spectacular ocean views.
Almost nothing can match the delight of a child who has just spotted a breaching whale or playful dolphin. Find out for yourself when you book a Tamarindo whale-watching tour, which takes you aboard a boat to spot humpback whales, several area dolphin species and, if timed right, the occasional nesting sea turtle.
The family that giggles and gets muddy together, stays together! That’s our motto, at least when we’re out for a day at nearby Rincón de la Vieja National Park, where you and your family will explore volcanic fumaroles, bubbling mud, and eerie steam holes before heading to the hot springs, where you can soak away the day (and treat your skin to some volcanic mud!).
If you’ve ever dreamed of riding down the beach at sunset (or in the surf), then here’s your chance! And while Tamarindo’s horseback riding tours are the stuff fantasies are made of, they’re also a hint of our local culture: Our province of Guanacaste has been the wild frontier, teeming with cattle ranches, cowboys, and their trusty steeds.
If your kids are a little older – or if they just love a good swim in the sea followed by a tranquil sunset – then a Tamarindo sunset sail is a Can’t-Miss Activity. This afternoon tour first ferries you to a secluded cove, where you’ll snorkel, swim, or simply enjoy the sun, before motoring out into the Pacific for a close-up view of the fiery sun and its evening friend, the horizon.
THE bucket-list activity of many a kid (and their kid-at-heart parents), Costa Rica’s famous jungle waterslide is an absolute must for many visiting families. Located on the slopes of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, this jungle adventure includes horseback riding, zipline canopies, open-air hot springs, and the promised 400-meter (a quarter-mile!) waterslide through the rainforest.
Nicknamed “Bella Vida” – the Beautiful Life – Sunrise 3 is one of our most popular vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Costa Rica for great reasons: It has Pacific Ocean views. The community has incredible amenities. And the condo walking distance to everything.
That last part is important. Here in the land of year-round sun and the pura vida, you usually have to make a choice: Do you want views or do you want convenience? Sunrise 3 defies the can’t-have-it-all trope and delivers both! Because, while you’ll have ocean views from your private terrace, you’re also in the heart of Tamarindo – no taxis, no Ubers, no asking for a ride… You can walk everywhere.
And did we mention? Said everywhere includes the beach, which is located just a few steps across the street. Ahhh, paradise!
Added to the condo’s unparalleled convenience and location, Sunrise 3 also delivers cozy condo interiors, a breezy private terrace/balcony, a beachy color palette, a well-equipped kitchen, and lightning-fast 100 Mbps internet. You’ll also have access to the community’s oversized resort pool, with a spectacular water feature and many sun loungers.
As we said, welcome to paradise!
If you (or your kids) aren’t quite feeling the surf, then take some time to enjoy the next-best thing: boogie boards! While tamer (thanks to smaller waves and full-body-to-board contact) than their surfboard counterparts, boogies boards still offer an exciting ride and a chance to claim a bit of Tamarindo’s surf as your very own! You can rent a board for a budget-friendly $10-$15/day, and the ultra-gentle waves in front of Hotel Capitán Suizo are perfect for even the tiniest boarders.
Whether you’re here for birdwatching (go early) or prefer sun-splashed scenery (all day), an ocean kayak can provide a window into the Tamarindo that few ever see. It’s active, it’s fun, and, if you hit the waves right, it’s exciting! And it’s also enlightening: Depending on the time of day (and your luck), you could spot birds and monkeys in the mangroves or sea turtles and dolphins out at sea. And even when the wildlife is taking a nap, the estuaries and Pacific remain an incredible sight.
If you can think of nothing more refreshing (and memorable) than a hike to and swim beneath a waterfall, then welcome! Our scenic province of Guanacaste is studded with falling water both great and small, many accompanied by cool, mountain-fed swimming holes below. Be sure to ask, though, before you swim: Some waterfalls are safe, while others are considered to be viewing-only! (Check out 5 of our favorite waterfalls in Guanacaste.)
While beaches are an integral element of any family vacation, secluded beaches are the kind of thing that takes your visit from family fun to forever memories. So, take a day (or a few) to peruse some of our area’s off-the-beaten-path sands – ask us, and we’ll point you in many right directions! – and discover everything from tiny strips of sand to huge swaths of beach that you can almost call your own, if only for a few hours.
Tamarindo is world-renowned for its sportfishing – everything from hard-fighting billfish to yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi (dorado). For fishing and outdoorsy families, this can be one of your trip’s most memorable experiences: teaching your kids how to hold the reel, watching their excitement as a fish tweaks their line for the very first time, and cheering them on as they reel in (or lose) their first fighter. And hey, if you catch something worth eating, our family vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Costa Rica have fully equipped kitchens (and often, outdoor grills) perfect for preparing your catch-of-the-day!
Life comes at us fast and before we know it, our kids are grown. Sometimes, we need to take a beat and remind ourselves to slow down. Hiking is one of those times: It’s an hour, an afternoon, or a day to take your time and look around. To chat with your kids and create new memories. To delight in watching a monkey troupe pass through the trees or squeal at your first wild sloth sighting. Because in life, especially family life, sometimes the simple things are the most rewarding.
Whether you’re traveling with just the kids or are planning a huge family reunion, our vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Costa Rica can more than accommodate! We offer everything from cozy two-bedroom condos to 8+ bedroom private resorts equipped with ocean-view infinity pools, daily meals, and so much more.
Can you imagine a 2022 family vacation in Costa Rica? We sure can! Get in touch.
Tamarindo is as close as Costa Rica’s Gold Coast comes to a beach metropolis and yet, it’s the furthest thing from a city: A mile long from stem to stern, this golden-sand and cerulean-sea travel hotspot packs restaurants and shops, activities and attractions into one sand-dusted town.
For this little town lives by the motto of “surf, eat, and have fun” – and all three, we readily accept as a contractual obligation! It’s the life you lead, when you live or vacation in Guanacaste’s chilliest city by the sea.
While you may have heard about the first (surf) and be tempted by the second (eat), today we’re here to discover the third: Have fun! There are tens, if not hundreds of ways to have fun in Tamarindo. And now, we’re going to discover some of the must-dos, the must-sees, and the you-wouldn’t-want-to-miss-‘ems.
When you visit Costa Rica (and especially the Pacific), your activities will be most often divided into land activities and water activities. Make enough time for both because, by land and by sea, Tamarindo is a wonder!
Here are some of the highlights:
When you think Tamarindo, you likely think ocean. And so, we thought we start with the land: spectacular, wild, and not to be overlooked, our landscapes and scenery house heart-stopping sights and bucket-list wildlife.
Wildlife & Nature Tours: It’s undeniable that nature and wildlife are one of Costa Rica’s primary draws. And yet, many people who visit Tamarindo fail to discover even a sliver of the biodiversity our area holds. These tours change that, taking on your choice of a hike, river float (we know, technically a water activity, or other conveyance to discover monkeys and crocs, parrots and sea turtles, waterfalls and dry forests.
Canopy Ziplines: One of the most iconic things to do in Tamarindo, a canopy zipline tour offers a blend of nature and thrill, adrenaline and wonder. Our favorite takes you into a 150-year-old Costa Rican cattle ranch, to discover 11 cables, a swinging bridge, and a heart-pounding rappel.
Horseback Riding: If you’ve ever wanted to ride down a beach or travel into Costa Rica’s backroads, then horseback can be just the ticket: Roam, explore, and discover the places and spaces that would be nearly impossible to see via car or your own two feet.
Volcano Tours: Take a full day to explore one of Costa Rica’s active volcanoes, where you can hike to blue waters, discover waterfalls, soak in hot springs, slather yourself in mineral-rich mud, and so much more.
Have you dreamed of flying – of rising high, your arms spread, your hair blowing in the breeze, and your heart soaring, your body ablaze with exhilaration?
Puesta del Sol is a little like that.
Set high on a hilltop overlooking the beach town of Tamarindo, this spectacular home delivers 300-degree panoramic views and architecture designed to amaze. Here, ocean breezes whip and race up the mountain, wrapping you in their refreshing chill. Here, the Pacific Ocean unfurls at your feet and swooping seabirds frame your view. Here, you’re floating above it all – almost flying, high above earth and sea, in a special paradise all your own.
Named for the sunset – or, more precisely, for the “setting of the sun” – Puesta del Sol is one of our most outstanding homes: upscale yet warm, both remarkable and welcoming. Oversized windows both frame the artwork of this view and beckon sunlight to steam indoors. An expansive infinity pool bids you to spend your mornings, your afternoons, your every moment on the terrace. Sliding glass doors blur the line between indoors and out.
And then, there’s Puesta del Sol’s namesake: the blazing tropical sunset that sets the sky on fire, a riot of jewel tones, bright fluorescents, and muted pastels. Because, while this is a home built on details and rooted in refinement, it always remembers and honors the very reasons you’re here…
From the estuaries to the grand Pacific, here’s what awaits in Tamarindo’s waters:
Surfing & SUP: From surf lessons to stand-up paddleboarding (and even SUP yoga!), Tamarindo is well known for its epic surf, gentle waves, and everything in between. So, whether you’re a brand-new beginner or a seasoned pro, you’ll find something to make your board rock and your soul soar.
Catamaran Sailing: Named a perennial favorite and an absolute must, a catamaran cruise takes you out into Tamarindo’s bays and shallows to float, swim, and snorkel (spot octopus, pufferfish, manta rays, starfish, and more!). Choose an afternoon cruise to top the day off with an incredible sunset!
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving: Private excursions will take you to the Catalina Islands, secluded coves, and tiny inlets to seek out the best underwater sights on the North Pacific coast.
Turtle Nesting: Las Baulas National Marine Park, located on the north end of Tamarindo, is one of the world’s most important leatherback turtle nesting sites. While the turtles are only in residence a few times a year, neighboring beaches also host green sea turtles and olive ridleys.
Sport Fishing: Undeniably one of Costa Rica’s most beloved ocean adventures, sport fishing offers a scenic journey and, if luck and skill are on your side, a hard-won victory. Better yet, not only can we arrange traditional sport fishing excursions, but we can also set you up for a day on a panga, for an authentic and traditional Costa Rican fishing experience!
Mangrove & Sea Kayaking: If you prefer your paddle to a motor, Tamarindo delivers with quiet kayaking adventures out into the Pacific or deep into the wilds of the town’s mangrove estuaries. Spot all manner of wildlife and venture out to where you’re nearly alone with the Pacific, for an experience few will ever have.
At the juncture of sea and sky, of downtown and out-of-the-way, Casa Xanadu overlooks the marvels of Tamarindo: Las Baulas National Marine Park, the Tamarindo wildlife estuary, a rolling mountain range, and two scenic beaches. From here, you can see it all – including the day’s surf conditions!
For here, amidst the biodiversity afforded by rare tropical dry forest – one of the last remaining swatch in the world – Casa Xanadu is at the epicenter of wonder and wildlife: Green forest, sun-drenched sands, and the sparkling Pacific, where seabirds swoop and iguanas sun, where howler monkeys holler and parakeets squawk.
Just a few minutes from the beach – take the golf cart or follow your own two feet! – this stunning home welcomes you to four spacious bedrooms, a private infinity pool, shaded terraces, and sun-splashed balconies. Indoors, a beachy color palette and a chef’s kitchen, indoor-outdoor dining and windows to frame your every view.
Because yes, always, it’s that view. That’s why you’re here. That’s why you’ll never want to leave.
Did you know that when you stay with Vacation Rentals of Tamarindo, you gain access to complimentary concierge services?
But it’s so much more than that. Because working with our friendly concierge, Cristina (or Cris, for short) is a shortcut to zero stress, vacation bliss. It’s saying adios to handling the time-intensive, little-things-matter, what-does-this-say-in-English? details. Because Cris – well, she takes care of everything.
Even better, her services are completely complimentary. Because we’ve all been roped into believing we can do it ourselves. We’ve all bought a $15 travel guidebook and said, “This is going to be fun!” And then, we’ve all had a moment or two that we’ve pulled out hair, lambasted the computer, and generally threw our hands up in frustration.
That’s not what you want out of your vacation.
But then, there’s also the Costa Rica quotient: Smaller than the country of West Virginia, our little nation seems like it would be easy to navigate. Keyword: Seems. Because here, where the rivers block certain roads during the green season and where it can take an entire day to travel 150 miles, there are things you should know. But you won’t know them.
Cris will. Because that’s her job. She knows all the ins and outs and, what’s more, she can advise you on the best, the bucket-worthy, and the not-everyone-knows-about-them things to do in Costa Rica. And then, she’ll build you a custom itinerary. At exactly the same price you’d book it. Only, without the hiccups and the problems and the redundancies of the uninitiated.
Welcome to your carefree Tamarindo vacation.
The epitome of a tropical lifestyle, Casa Rebecca is a sleek and chic retreat ensconced within the pristine community of Hacienda Pinilla: a championship golf course, a luxurious beach club, multiple restaurants, and pristine beaches, bordered by tennis courts, walking and biking trails, horseback riding stables, and rolling cattle ranch. A slice of traditional Costa Rica, yours to explore.
For this, Casa Rebecca is your perfect spot. A retreat to walls of glass and high ceilings, a private pool and breezy terraces, this is vacation. Vacation, to the tune of sun-drenched terraces and expansive pool deck, airy indoor-outdoor living and lush tropical gardens. And, if you’re traveling with kids, they’re sure to love the bunk room – the perfect spot for a vacation slumber party!
We know, the options can be overwhelming. But, as ever, we’re here to help. Cris is here to help.
Simply put: She’ll handle everything. All the logistics. Every reservation. Airport transportation. Tamarindo transportation. From A to Z and everything in between: When you book one of our Tamarindo vacation rentals, our in-house concierge will quickly be in touch.
She’s an expert in Tamarindo travel: Digging beneath the surface and reaching beyond the norm, Cris not only makes it her job to know Tamarindo, but to get to know you, too! She’s like a real-life guidebook who expertly overlays Tamarindo’s most iconic experiences and must-do adventures with your needs, preferences, and plans. What’s more, she’ll work with your budget. Any budget – really.
It begins with our welcome packet, which you’ll receive after you make a booking. It’ll introduce you to many of our favorite things, so have a look. Start building your wish list. And then, talk to Cris and let the fun begin. It’s part magic, part expertise. And, as we said, completely free. So go ahead, pick Cris’s brain! She can’t wait to hear from you!
Tamarindo is the kind of place where you don’t have to look for something to: Tamarindo nightlife finds you. Everywhere you go, almost anywhere you look – there’s a bar, a restaurant, or a hangout where you can spend your evening hours.
That said, everyone has their favorites. Here are a few of ours.
Ferias, or farmer’s markets, are a Costa Rican staple. And nowhere are they more enjoyable than right here in Tamarindo, where the feria becomes a night market complete with live music, international food, and artisan vendors selling jewelry, clothes, art, and so much more.
Open every Thursday from 6-9 p.m., this is our version of the feria gone wild. Only, instead of carrots and mangos, you’ll snack on arepas and empanadas, pizza and pulled pork, lasagna and cocktails. And then, there are the fire dancers and the traditional dancers, the DJs and the clowns – the absolutely everything you need to enjoy an open-air night out on the town!
And hey, if you’re also looking for the more traditional feria, we have that, too. (It’s on Saturday mornings!)
Luxury amenities meet the eco-lifestyle at La Perla 154, a spacious fifth-floor luxury condo just two blocks to wide, sandy beach, downtown, and Tamarindo nightlight.
For here, overlooking lush green hillsides and the dotted rooftops of Tamarindo, where the Pacific is almost close enough to reach out and touch, La Perla 154 frames sapphire views of Tamarindo Bay, passing sailboats (and the occasional humpback whale), and what may be some of the world’s most spectacular sunsets.
Step inside and into a world of creature comforts: a chef’s kitchen and resort pool, three bedroom suites and a shaded balcony in the round, a striking color palette and again, those views. Because they are everywhere and undeniable. And outside, La Perla’s community amenities, including 24-hour security, expansive lobby, Schindler elevators, a sparkling resort pool, and an owners’ clubhouse with ocean-view sun terrace.
All this, just minutes to all things Tamarindo. Set on a hilltop and yet, just a short ride down to the center of town – to restaurants and nightlife, to shopping and activities, and to everywhere you want to be in charming Tamarindo town center.
Costa Ricans love to dance. And by love, we mean that dance is a part of almost every Costa Rican cultural event and holiday. This rhythmic art is a thread woven through the tapestry of Costa Rican life. And it’s something everyone should try, at least once!
While in Costa Rica, you’re most likely to hear one of three styles of Latin music: merengue (fast and frenetic), cumbia (da-da-da da-da-da, you’ll want to jump to the beat!), and salsa (a bit slower, not so bouncy). Of the three, salsa is typically the easiest to pick up (especially if you’ve ever taken a high school ballroom dance class).
If that’s the case, then head to Utopia, where you can take some basic salsa classes and then, get dancing! Every Tuesday.
If delicious eats and great drinks aren’t enough to lure you to Pacifico Bar, then its Tamarindo nightlife options should do the trick!
Every Friday and Saturday night, this beloved Tamarindo mainstay hosts a dance-and-music party that will have you feeling the beach life right down to your soul. As the sun goes down and the moon comes up, you can drink and dance and laugh and enjoy the balmy night air and tropical beat. It’s pretty perfect!
It’s not often you find a place like Casa Calico. Nestled into the beating heart of Tamarindo, this intimate home has absconded to its own private world – one made of cool waters and whispering palms, private gardens and twinkling lights. If you’ve ever wondered where fun-loving fairies and forest sprites go on vacation, our bets are here.
Because Casa Calico offers a spectacular walled sanctuary that affords both a walkable downtown location and the luxury of privacy. From its sparkling pool and shaded patio to the chef’s kitchen and graceful indoor-outdoor living spaces, this home instills both wow and wonder – a not-oft-found blend of exhilaration and serenity.
Ideal for small groups and multigenerational travelers, the property is separated into a main home (3 bedrooms) and an independent poolside casita (1 bedroom), joined by the pool terrace. It’s just minutes to the beach and a secret garden, making Tamarindo feel like your own personal wonderland.
Specifically, a wonderland just a short walk to all things nightlife: to restaurants and bars, fire dancing and moonlit beach strolls. To everything and anything you want for on vacation, because Tamarindo is that kind of place. And Casa Calico is that kind of home.
When you’re looking for a more refined approach to Tamarindo nightlife, Pangas Beach Club delivers with candlelit dinners, twinkling string lights, and the crash of surf, just a few feet from where you dine.
It’s dinner and drinks. It’s the area’s freshest seafood. And it’s both a consummately chill, yet tropically upscale approach to whiling away your evening hours.
There’s nothing quite so Tamarindo as a sunset on the beach, unless it’s a sunset on the beach accompanied by live music!
That’s why we consider Friday nights at El Vaquero as some of the best that Tamarindo nightlife has to offer: A relaxed vibe. Good eats (and drinks). Incredible sunsets. And live music, every week. It’s the perfect end to the week, in a perfect place on Earth.
Overlooking the gentle curve of Las Baulas estuary – a privileged point where the horizon kisses the turquoise twins of sea and sky – Las Mareas Villa 1 unfolds over some of Tamarindo’s best views – a skyline that stretches from Tamarindo to the protected shores of Playa Grande.
And here, where you can check the surf conditions from the comfort of your own private balconies and covered terraces, this graceful home rises to deliver the Costa Rican dream: a gourmet kitchen and an infinity-edge pool, a beachy color palette and lush foliage, lightning-fast internet and a front-row seat to the sun’s daily passage across the sky. The sunsets are spectacular! A tropical oasis awaits.
This oasis also comes with convenience and location, too. Set on a hilltop just above Pangas Restaurant & Beach Club, Las Mareas 1 is less than a half-mile to downtown Tamarindo – at once in the heart of it all and far-flung to the inner reaches of secluded paradise. It’s the best of all worlds and just minutes to all of Tamarindo’s cultural and nightlife pursuits.
Tamarindo nightlife is more than dancing, dining, and fire dancing. Because here, in one of the world’s most beautiful places, nightlife can simply be night life.
And by that, we mean that some nights, there’s no better place to enjoy life than in your own private slice of paradise. Your feet in the pool. Soaking in a hot tub. Lounging on a terrace. Listening the crash of the surf and watching as streaky sunsets fade to twinkling stars. Because here, you see the constellations. You can dine on your own private deck. You can whip up your favorite drinks and serve them in the privacy of your own home and patio. And when it’s time to go to sleep, you can count stars instead of sheep.

When you’re in the mood for a holiday escape – and by that, we mean anything from a tinsel-draped escape in paradise to an escape-the-holidays in paradise – then Costa Rica (and our available Tamarindo rentals, below) graciously delivers.
The consummate host and a happy celebrant, this tropical nation invites you to celebrate the season with walks on the beach and long afternoons on the terrace, soul-shaking sunsets and leisurely swims in the pool. Because what better way to celebrate Christmas or toast to the New Year, than with your toes buried in sand and your hair slicked back from a recent swim?
That said, the holidays here book up fast. Not only is the sun shining and the weather perfect, but we’re heading into our busiest season of the year. So, to make your last-minute holiday planning a little easier, we’ve pulled together our rentals with last-minute availability. (Check the bottom of each description for Christmas/New Year’s week availability.)
A beach holiday – literally! Gather your nearest and dearest, swap your pine trees for palm trees, and escape to a Pacific-adjacent, golf-course getaway in the tropics.
Steps to the beach, Casa Guayacan invites you to take a morning (and evening) stroll down the beach, whenever the whim strikes. Prefer private waters to crashing waves? This luxurious home delivers, with a private infinity pool and sun-splashed outdoor terrace, where you can dip your toes into refreshing waters, lounge in the sun or shade, and grill up a feast in the outdoor kitchen.
Indoors, Casa Guayacan is just as impressive: neutral color palettes and warm woods, floor-to-ceiling glass and exquisite indoor/outdoor living spaces, golf course views and four private bedroom suites, each opening independently to the outdoors. All this, plus access to Hacienda Pinilla’s myriad amenities, including said aforementioned golf course, plus a luxury Beach Club, tennis courts, trails, and more.
If you’re lucky enough to visit Costa Rica over the holidays – say, any time between mid-November and mid-January – then be sure to try a traditional tamale!
Be aware, these holiday treats are only slightly reminiscent of their corn husk-wrapped Mexican cousins; Costa Rican tamales are instead wrapped in plantain leaves and tied with a bow. Try them with a bit of salsa Lizano, hot sauce, or a dab of local sour cream (known as natilla).
One of our newest single-story, four-bedroom Tamarindo rentals, Casa Kenkai is a spectacular golf course home in the Reserva de Golf residential community of luxurious Hacienda Pinilla.
The holidays take on a decidedly tropical feel in this modern home, which curves around its centerpiece: your private outdoor pool, sparkling by day and shimmering by night. Indoors, abundant natural light meets high ceilings and a neutral color palette, to create open spaces and a visual breath of fresh air – a gentle reminder to greet the day and appreciate the beauty that surrounds.
Casa Kenkai is the kind of place that lets you be you: If you’re seeking a quiet holiday, hole up in your own little paradise. Whip up a feast and serve a holiday meal on the shaded outdoor patio. Pour a cocktail and toast to golf course views. Enjoy the quiet, the peace and tranquility, tropics-style.
If you’re more of a social holiday traveler, escape to the luxuries of the Hacienda Pinilla Beach Club. Located oceanfront on Playa Avellanas, one of the most beautiful beaches in the area, the club offers a beachfront infinity pool, oceanfront restaurant, and fitness center. Or, reserve your favorite tee time, grab a match at the tennis courts, take a horseback ride, or simply hike into the wilds. Here, your holidays are whatever you wish them to be.
Translated both as “heaven’s home” or the “house in the sky” (both would be accurate!), Casa Cielo is a dream vacation home: Not far from our Tamarindo rentals, this Flamingo Beach home unfolds over beach and ocean views and 360º panoramas, which extend to Playa Conchal, Playa Brasilito, Playa Flamingo, Playa Potrero, Sugar Beach, and the Catalina Islands. Just imagine the sunsets!
Ample, expansive, and exquisite, this vacation home spares no detail: Prepare holiday meals in the gourmet-equipped kitchen, then serve them on the tropical terrace-in-the-round. Swim away your stress in the crystal-clear pool and rinse off in a tropical outdoor shower. Douse yourself in relaxation and toast to the holidays in paradise.
When you can bear to leave Casa Cielo behind, descend the breezy hill and visit Playa Flamingo, one of our area’s most beloved swimming beaches. Looking for a little seclusion? Thanks to mountain formations with fingers that reach into the sea, this section of the Gold Coast is known for its secluded beaches, tidal pools, and lagoons – all ideal spots to dig your toes into white sand and take a dip in pristine blue waters.
Life’s unwritten rule declares you can’t have it all. Casa Xanadu begs to differ. Because here, tucked onto a quiet hillside, this luxury vacation home serves up views over two beaches, one national park, one wildlife estuary, and one imposing mountain line. It’s the diverse wonder and wild nature of Costa Rica, all wrapped into a single panorama. Talk about a holiday gift!
Spectacular in every sense, Casa Xanadu is one of our most breathtaking Tamarindo rentals: In addition to its ocean views, the home perches over rare tropical dry forest that teems with life: flocks of parakeets, troupes of howler monkeys, clouds of fluttering butterflies, and lazy iguanas all act as next-door neighbors, at least while you’re here.
And when you’re not outside, enjoying the views, Mother Nature, your private infinity pool, and an expansive sun terrace, you’ll be inside, enjoying the home’s spacious interiors and ample social spaces. And everywhere, always, there’s that view. That view that beckons, that calls you forth. So go ahead, answer the call. This is what the holidays in Costa Rica are all about.
The word decadent might call to mind pecan pies and sugar plum fairies, but it’s also a perfect description for Casa Serena – a home as indulgent, as luxurious, and as downright decadent as your holidays deserve.
Because Casa Serena sits beachfront on the Pacific Ocean – a rare luxury in Costa Rica, and even rarer still in the exclusive community of Hacienda Pinilla. Experience true extravagance, every time you wander out your doorway and onto the sand. With each dip in the custom infinity pool, which wraps around a tree. And whenever you discover those telltale grains of white sand between your toes. This is life.
Of course, Casa Serena is not content to deliver just one of the best outdoor experiences; she demands to be the best indoors, too. Here, every bedroom suite has a private bath, the WiFi is lightning-fast, the kitchen is gourmet equipped, and the spa and full gym are yours, any time. Because Casa Serena is all about serenity – about wanting for nothing and sparing no luxury, no exquisite detail, no touch of comfort.
Far be it from dampening the holiday spirit, tropical weather puts an outdoors-all-the-time spin on end-of-year celebrations.
One of our favorite traditions is the annual tree lighting, which occurs throughout Costa Rica in almost every major town and provincial capital. Most light artificial evergreens but, depending on where you are and the personality of the province, you’re also likely to find lit palm trees, decorated street lamps, and other sparkling somethings of the holiday variety. Whether you celebrate the holiday or are here to escape the trappings, a little twinkle is sure to shine a special light on your holiday in Costa Rica.
Beautiful and beachfront, open-air Flamingo Blu is your ticket into the blue: an oceanfront-all-day kind of place where you’ll split your hours between the sun-splashed pool, palm-thatched lounge chairs, and the sparkling Pacific Ocean.
Set onto the hillside and reaching down to the sands of Flamingo Beach, this is one of those Tamarindo rentals (or Tamarindo-area rentals) that has it all: ocean breezes and a beachfront location, incredible panoramas (ocean, mountains, and sky) and direct access to the sands. In a word, it’s perfect, especially for the holidays.
Gather, whip up holiday meals, and enjoy yourself in Flamingo Blu’s open-air living areas, private infinity pool, and an expansive curved terrace, with front-row seats to some of the coast’s best sunsets. This is where incredible memories are made, from the moment the howlers hoot in the morning to the time you bid goodnight to the winking stars at night.
When’s the last time you celebrated the holidays with an afternoon of pool fun, barbecuing, and your very own waterslide?
Welcome to Casa Bonita Beach, where breezy pool terraces and shaded outdoor dining promise the perfect foil to your private pool and delightful waterslide (designed both for kids and for kids-at-heart!). Because when you holiday in the tropics, you deserve the tropical lifestyle, complete with all-day sun, lounge chairs, and an outdoor wine fridge.
Inside, Casa Bonita Beach is just as extravagant, opening onto high ceilings, a beachy color palette, a gourmet-ready kitchen, and verdant views. And for our multigenerational families and travelers with disabilities, this elite property has now added a wheelchair-accessible independent apartment – ramp access to a king bedroom and second full-twin bunk room, plus a kitchenette, private terrace, and a wheelchair-accessible bathroom.
Set right in the heart of Tamarindo, Sunrise 3 is the epicenter of all things convenient and wonderful. Because, when you’re the type of holiday traveler who prefers to dine out on a holiday and toast to the coming year with a sunset stroll, this is exactly where you want to be.
A warm and central condo – and one of our top downtown Tamarindo rentals – Sunset 3 is a special place: walking distance to absolutely everything, it puts you just across the street from the beach and the Pacific, which you can enjoy from your ocean-view terrace. Venture out into the oversized resort pool or simply tuck into a cozy evening overlooking the brilliant streaks of a tropical sunset.
So, what does the holiday season have in store at Sunset 3? Greet the day with your toes in the sand or your feet in the sea. Spend the day discovering tropical traditions – sandy “snowmen,” anyone? – or simply enjoying the slow life in a hammock beneath a tropical sun. Whip up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen – or dine out at one of Tamarindo’s many international restaurants. Celebrate however you’d like or in no way at all; the choice and the day are yours.
If you’re perusing Tamarindo rentals this holiday season, look a little north and into the promises of Playa Conchal, Costa Rica’s pink-hued beach and quiet haven. For here, within the exclusive beach and golf resort community of Reserva Conchal, Villa Marlene welcomes you to a quiet a picturesque holiday season.
When you first arrive, you’ll immediately know why you’re here: This is paradise, in a grand paradise that comes with a private pool and Pacific Ocean views. Indeed, Villa Marlene is designed around its open terraces, dining pavilion, and sparkling pool, which overlooks Reserva Conchal’s forest panoramas and stretches all the to the blue Pacific and beyond.
You’ll fall in love with the hammocks and grill station, open interiors and beachy color palette, fine finishes and spacious rooms. And you’ll be forever drawn outdoors, into the tropical sun, whether you’re lounging on your private deck or venturing out to enjoy Reserva Conchal’s many amenities, including a luxurious beach club and championship golf course.
The holidays are a very particular time: Either you love them (and can’t wait to love them in a tropical setting) or you escape the rush (and want to do so in a tropical setting). Either way, we get it! And we’re happy to help.
We’re here to share all our planning know-how and to help you jump onto last-minute holiday travel. Whether you’re looking to narrow down your options for Tamarindo rentals or are looking for a few yes-they-still-have-availability suggestions, we’re here and we’re ready.

There’s something special about being one of the very first to enjoy a new experience. And yet, being one of the first is only one of the many perks that await at three of our newest Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation rentals:
What’s in a name? If you’re staying at Casa Moderna, it’s the truth: Modern to its core, this sleek and beautiful luxury home delivers clean lines, polished finishes, and a neutral color palette that invites nature to take center stage. Welcome to floor-to-ceiling glass, soaring interiors, and an outdoors – lush tropical landscaping – that’s invited in.
This five-bedroom home offers a perfect escape: One of our more secluded Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation rentals, the property encircles you in waving palms and lush hedge, creating a tropical oasis from the private pool and shaded terraces. Indoors, your eye is drawn to the floating stairway and double-height ceilings, breezy décor and chef-ready kitchen.
All this, located within spectacular Reserva Conchal, just a few minutes’ drive to one of the most beautiful beaches in Guanacaste. You’ll also have access to Reserva Conchal’s luxury Beach Club and tee times on the golf course.
One of the more elite Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation rentals, Casa Savanna is located within the exclusive community of Hacienda Pinilla.
So, we’ll start there: Hacienda Pinilla, located 15 minutes south of Tamarindo, unfolds over 4,500 acres of golden beaches, tropical dry forest, and open savannah – a scenic cross-sampling of all great things Guanacaste, rolled into one welcoming community. Welcome!
Because, when you stay at Casa Savanna, you’ll have full access to Hacienda Pinilla’s myriad amenities: an incredible oceanfront Beach Club, hiking and biking trails, pristine beaches, the Hacienda Pinilla Golf Course, tennis courts, and much more.
Of course, you’re here not only for the community but for Casa Savanna itself: an incredible home comprised of four independent bedroom suites with private baths, joined at their center to form a common living/dining area with a fully equipped chef’s kitchen. And at their heart, your private swimming pool, terrace, and shaded gazebo. The finest in indoor/outdoor living!
Villa Motmot – named for the motmot bird, one of Guanacaste’s most beautiful birds and a frequent visitor to the home – is both one of the newest Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation rentals and completely luxurious, in all the right ways. We’re talking a secluded hilltop location and Pacific Ocean views, a rooftop deck and a front-row seat to some of Costa Rica’s most magnificent sunsets.
Located just 10 minutes (on foot!) to Tamarindo beaches, this eco-villa has a green soul and a story to tell: For more than 25 years, its builders have helped protect and reforest Costa Rica’s rainforests and now, they have built an incredible home with a low carbon footprint, including solar-heated water, solar-powered energy, water recycling, and a highly biodiverse garden to support birds and mammals.
Inside and out, you’ll spot no shortcuts: Villa Motmot is a celebration of modern and environmentally friendly design. As an example, each of the homes six bedrooms features a king bed, smart TV, and A/C; the tropical gardens host not only wildlife but also a 12 x 7 meter Boule court for Boccia and Petanque; and the rooftop deck sprawls over 100 square meters (1,080 square feet).

Sometimes, it feels like we hardly have our feet planted before the rug gets pulled out from under us again. (For the n-th time, it seems.) Over the last 18 months, everything has been so in flux that it’s been hard to keep our current events straight. (Did you even know that it’s the Costa Rica wet season? And that the deals are great?!)
So, we thought we’d give you a boots-on-the-ground kind of update: a quick overview of what’s happening in Tamarindo. Because there’s nothing like being here – like knowing what happened yesterday, what’s happening today, and what’s scheduled for tomorrow – to help you feel a little more secure in your travel decisions (for today or tomorrow).
It’s September, and that means that the Costa Rica wet season is in full swing! Here in Costa Rica’s driest region, that’s a great thing, because it means that our landscapes have greened up, our flowers are in full bloom, and everything looks just beautiful.
It also means that Costa Rica wet season deals and perks have been officially activated. We’re talking discounts on vacation rentals and fewer crowds for activities, better deals on airfare and cooler afternoon temperatures. Because, if you ask any local, you’ll probably hear that the green season is the best season, for all these many reasons (and more… go ahead, ask us!).
So, if you’re in a traveling state of mind, we urge you to consider last-minute travel during the Costa Rica wet season. If you’re tempted, here are a few Tamarindo vacation rentals that still have some availability over the next couple of months:
This brand new, luxurious home is an ideal choice for Costa Rica wet season travel. Its location – concealed within the hills of Tamarindo, overlooking ocean views and magnificent sunsets – affords some of the region’s best views. Especially now, when the entire coast has erupted with every shade of green, sprinkled in a rainbow of tropical flowers.
Just a 10-minute walk to Tamarindo beaches, surf spots, and everything downtown the villa offers a luxury vacation experience, starting with your very own private pool. We think you’ll also love the lush gardens, which are ablaze this time of year, and which give the villa its name: the motmot, one of Guanacaste’s most beautiful birds, is a frequent visitor here.
Hidden in the heart of downtown Tamarindo, this gorgeous and wild (at least, wild-adjacent!) property promises a sparkling pool, tropical gardens, and a convenient location within walking distance to sandy beaches and some of Costa Rica’s best surf breaks (thrilling, especially during the Costa Rica wet season!).
There is something truly special about a home this central and this convenient, while also this private and this secluded. You’ll feel like you’re vacationing within your own private garden, especially now, when everything is in bloom! And, if you are traveling with friends or family, you’ll appreciate the main home’s three bedrooms, paired with an independent casita’s additional bedroom suite.
When you want to stay right across from the beach, when you crave the amenities of a larger resort, when you seek a great deal (especially during the Costa Rica wet season), then you should look no further than Ibis Condo #10.
This luxurious condo promises seasonal ocean views from the great room and grand deck. But, what you can’t always see, you will hear: crashing surf and the sound of happy beach-goers. Feel free to join them, because world-famous Langosta Beach and Tamarindo Beach are just steps away!
Working hand in hand with our first update, we thought we’d share that tourism is back! Here in Tamarindo, people are visiting. Restaurants and attractions and national parks and everything… well, it’s all open. The sun is shining and the sea breeze is blowing. Our toes are in the sand and we are reveling in this return to everyday life! Because life the beach? Well, it’s glorious. (Even when it’s just for a week.)
It helps that Costa Rica is open to international travelers. And by open, we mean OPEN: there are no restrictions on who can visit. And there are very few requirements; the only real condition is that you must be either fully vaccinated or you must carry a travel insurance policy. Beyond that, you need only your passport and the easy government Health Pass, and you are into the country and enjoying your vacation.
Bottom line: Costa Rica is one of the easiest countries to travel to, as of September 2021.
Perhaps not surprisingly, given all the pent-up energy and anticipation, after putting our lives on hold for a year-and-a-half, Tamarindo real estate is now booming. Buyers are buying and sellers are happy. Time on market is short and our inventory – well, it’s in flux, in the best way possible.
If you’ve ever considered purchasing a home in Tamarindo, this is a good time to keep your eyes open. You’ll see many new listings pop up and maybe one will be your next home in Costa Rica.
Speaking of real estate, we are also seeing the emergence of new developments and communities. Some that were on pause from 2019 and 2020, while others have announced brand new development. Again, in a word, real estate here is booming.
One of the greatest signs of return to everyday life – and one of the things we missed most, when we weren’t living that so-called everyday life – is the return of Tamarindo’s markets.
That’s right, our Thursday night farmers market and Saturday morning farmers market have both reopened, so, whether you’re here to vacation or to live, you can now, once again (!), buy all your favorite fruits and vegetables, fresh from the farm stand.
Another sign that we have returned to everyday life? Our brand-spanking-new Tourist Police delegation – a joint effort between the institute of tourism and the ministry of public security – has finally opened in downtown Tamarindo.
The Tourist Police are a special branch of the Costa Rican police, designed specifically to attend to tourist needs. The benefit is that most officers speak excellent English and they are well versed in all types of tourist concerns and challenges. We hope they will be a great asset to our community.
It has been incredibly fulfilling (and quite exciting) to see new stores, shops, and stands opening all over Tamarindo. We hope you’ll stop by and see what sparks your interest!
Many of these updates would not be possible, were it not for Costa Rica’s strong pandemic response – and Tamarindo’s adherence to COVID protocols. If you are considering a visit, but you were concerned about your safety, then know that here, in Tamarindo, health and safety protocols are being followed.
We wear masks in public spaces, and especially indoors. we keep our distance. Plastic barriers separate customers from store employees. And Costa Rica’s vaccine rollout has been strong. Beyond that, Costa Rica is a naturally “COVID-safe” destination, in the sense that most of our time is spent outdoors, walking the beach and enjoying the sunshine – some of the safest current health conditions, according to science.
For those of us who like to spend the evening out, great news! Due to COVID curfews, many of our local bars have adapted and become restaurants, often accompanied by live music. So now, you can order some of your favorite foods, request your favorite drink, and enjoy outdoor dining, all while taking some live music. It’s an innovative and welcome solution!
What’s more, we’ve noticed new restaurants opening up and down the beach! Stay tuned, as we’ll be sure to update you with some of our new favorites. (Or, take the taste-testing into your own hands and let us know what your favorites are.)
We’re happy to report that the road between Tamarindo and Playa Langosta are under repair. Will update you when there’s more to tell.
And, finally but not surprisingly, we’ve noticed that health retreats have seen a serious uptick in interest. This is likely a response to the past 18 months – to a world more focused on health, but still eager to travel and dash and we are so glad that Tamarindo is one of the chosen destinations for this new (or, perhaps, renewed) travel trend.

So, you’re thinking about traveling during the Costa Rica wet season? So, you’re a little concerned about just how wet the wet season can really be? So, you’re wondering what the difference is between the wet season and the dry season?
We can help with that, with all that. From what the green season is really like – and, for the record, the wet season is the same as the green season, but keep in mind there are mini-seasons within the season – to the many perks of the wet season, we’re filling you in on what locals already know:
Costa Rica’s green season can be a perfect time to visit. Provided you love emerald-green landscapes and heart-stopping sunsets, beaches all to yourself and significant discounts…
In a word: Green!
We are so witty and creative, we know. But seriously, the green season was not so much bestowed a name, but rather earned its name, from the landscapes that grow greener and greener as the rains fall. Your very first experience with the season will likely be a colorful one: lush and ripe and green, everywhere, paired with the tropical fluorescence of orchids and heliconia, cloud-dappled skies and kaleidoscopic sunsets.
And, while we (the collective “we”) tend to talk about the Costa Rica green season as one lump season, the reality is that the rain and overall weather can be very different from month to month. So, we thought we’d give you a brief rundown of what you can expect from the Costa Rica wet season, specifically here in Tamarindo and Guanacaste (Costa Rica’s driest region):
Here’s the real secret to weathering (if you’ll forgive the pun) the Costa Rica wet season: Plan for it! Build a bit of early-afternoon relaxation into your itinerary, literally. Schedule time every day, after lunch, to read a book or unwind at your vacation home. Sit out on your deck or balcony, watch the storm roll in (it’s impressive!), and enjoy one of life’s simplest pleasures: watching the rain pour down. Give yourself the time to enjoy this season. We locals sure do!
Bordering the leatherback turtle nesting grounds of Las Baulas, the recently redesigned Villa Brisa del Mar is named for the sweet sea breezes that kiss the air.
Welcome to the kind of place where the iguanas and toucans are your neighbors, and you’ll dine with a view of the Pacific. A luxury home with a patio and private pool that look like the set of a movie (but is really just your vacation home-away-from-home). A world where you can check the surf as you sip your morning coffee, and walk to the beach as quickly as you’d load Netflix.
Welcome to your last-minute, green-season paradise.
Last-minute vacations aren’t for everyone but they’re increasingly becoming for more someones. And that’s because last-minute travel provides you with the latitude and flexibility – not to mention, the deals and discounts – that you crave right now. Here are a few of the perks that await:
It’s no secret that last-minute deals and discounts are out there. Not just on flights (but yes, often on flights!), but also extending to your accommodations, transportation, and even activities.
It’s not so much about the deal, though, but about what these discounts mean: Namely, more latitude with how you spend your vacation dollars. More bang for your buck. And, perhaps even more importantly, more buck to create your desired bang.
One of Tamarindo’s newest luxury vacation homes, Villa Motmot combines an ecological conscience,1,000 square-foot rooftop terrace, private pool, and magnificent sunset and ocean views, to create a perfect vacation home – and a paradise during the Costa Rica wet season.
From here, you’re just a 10-minute walk to Tamarindo beaches, surf spots, and restaurants. And you’re a 0-minute commute to the villa’s namesake: Motmots frequently visit the fruit gardens surrounding the home, which hosts a variety of tropical wildlife, exotic blooms, and other must-sees during your visit. And did we mention the 12 x 7-meter Boule court for Boccia and Petanque?
This environmental leaning – and love for Costa Rica’s landscapes and biodiversity – is evident throughout the home: Its owners and builders have spent more than 25 years protecting and reforesting the country’s rainforests. It’s only natural, then, that they’d build a luxury home-away-from-home with a low-carbon footprint, thanks to solar-heated hot water, solar power, water recycling and, yes, incredibly biodiverse gardens that feed and shelter the wildlife you’ve come to see.
It may not be a quantifiable perk, but it’s a perk nonetheless: Last-minute travel feels thrilling. It ups the adventure quotient. Just the thought of it is probably enough to make your heart accelerate.
So go ahead, indulge in your next hit of adrenaline. Give in to exhilaration. Let yourself dream – and then, turn that dream into tomorrow’s reality. Because when travel is last-minute, you really can be on the plane tomorrow.
If you’re concerned that last-minute travel can’t be well-planned travel, then we’re happy to tell you that last-minute travel to Costa Rica could be your best-planned vacation ever.
It sounds like a line but it’s also true: At Vacation Rentals of Tamarindo, your reservation includes free concierge services: Knowledge, expertise, and planning from our in-house expert, Cristina, who knows Tamarindo better than the back of her hand. Her secret skill: Turning “I want to this, this, and this tomorrow” into “you’re doing this, this, and this tomorrow.” Go ahead – try her.
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the looping curve of Las Baulas Estuary – the gateway between Tamarindo and Playa Grande – Las Mareas Villa 1 promises some of Tamarindo’s best views and spectacular scenes.
While we love this home every month of the year, its setting and architecture are particularly well suited to the Costa Rica wet season: Perched on the hill – a perfect vantage point to watch the storms roll in – Villa 1 features many covered terraces and private balconies where you can sip a mug of Costa Rican coffee, read a book, and watch the rain patter down. Let the season wash over you (literally!).
When the weather is fine – and it should be fine, during much of your stay – pour yourself a cool drink, take a dip in your infinity-edge pool, whip up a feast on the ocean-view barbecue, and track the sun’s passage across the sky. And, come evening, watch as the sun sinks into the sea: You have a front-row seat to one of Costa Rica’s most stunning sunsets!
The last ~18 months have taught us to be cautious, both in everyday life and travel. Changing requirements, updated protocols, even the news cycle – the world travel panorama hasn’t felt stable in many months.
Enter last-minute travel: You know exactly what’s going on in the world, right now. You know what your home country’s travel requirements and recommendations are, right now. You know what Costa Rica’s travel requirements are, right now. (Officially: No test required for entry. No insurance necessary, if you’re vaccinated. You need only fill out the Health Pass.)

So, you’re thinking about visiting Costa Rica in September or October (also known as the green season)? And you’re also wondering just how much of a euphemism is “green season,” really? Are we talking sun-showers-and-rainbows season or daily-deluge season?
The answer is, it depends.
The very shortest answer we can give you is that Costa Rica’s green season (aka rainy season) runs from about mid-May through mid-November, and September and October are the rainiest months. (Don’t click away yet! There’s a but.)
BUT, “rainiest” depends on where you’re visiting – for example, Guanacaste province, home to Tamarindo and beyond, is the driest province in Costa Rica – and your rain tolerance. (More on that, in a moment.)
Before we can get into that, though, let’s talk about Costa Rican weather. When it comes to generalizing the country, we divide our weather into two basic seasons: the dry season (December-May) and the rainy/green season (June-November). Here’s how the 12 months break down, both weather and tourism-wise:
Broadly speaking, there are four main reasons you might be considering traveling to Costa Rica in September or October:
They’re all good reasons. Great enough, even, that you shouldn’t feel like you’re settling.
The secret is (seriously, ask any local), green season can be the very best season. For many reasons. Especially so in our province Guanacaste – again, home to Tamarindo – which breaks the mold, at least a bit: We’re drier than the rest of the country so, while we do experience a marked dry season and a wetter season, our green months are less wet (and, therefore, a little more enjoyable) than, say, in wetter regions south, like Manuel Antonio or the Osa Peninsula.
So, now you know that it’s not quite as simple as “green.” So, what can you expect in September and October?
That varies, as we said. But in Tamarindo, you’ll have a good chance of afternoon showers and the occasional thunderstorm. Most days, the rain will last anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple of hours. Evenings usually clear up and usher in the best sunsets of the year. They are truly spectacular.
Our best advice is to plan your September/October travel days: Book activities for the morning and reserve your early to mid-afternoons for time in your villa. Watch the storm roll in (it can be very impressive!) Read a book. Spent time together. Take a siesta. And if it doesn’t rain, take a dip in your private pool. Get bubbly in the hot tub. Drink in a little extra sun on your terrace.
And then, enjoy your evening. Revel in the sunset. Walk along the beach. Pick a new restaurant to try. Because, more often than not, September and October mornings and evenings, in Tamarindo, are very similar to mornings and evenings the other 10 months of the year. Only less expensive.
While we’re on the topic of less expensive: You can google and price compare for weeks and even months, and you’re not likely to ever find a price that compares to green season travel.
That’s the simple truth: Costa Rica’s best prices are offered during the green season. From flights to accommodations to some tours and activities, you’ll find lower prices, better perks, and fewer crowds, especially in the August-October window. (More on green season benefits, below.)
As an example, we’re happy to offer the following discounts for travel to Costa Rica in September and October 2021. Note, please reserve through our sister site, Stay in Tamarindo, or by getting in touch.
Book your September/October 2021 stay before June 30, 2021, and get one night free for every seven you book. Discount applies to all homes and condos, except El Chante, Casa Serena, Flamingo Blu, Compass House, and Casa Leo Loco. Coupon code FreeOne.
Book 7 nights (November 21-28, 2021) and get a 10% discount on the following homes with Promo Code THANKS2021:
We’re also offering a range of rental-specific specials, including:

So, now that you know what to expect, what are the benefits of travel during the green season – and, specifically, during the months of September and October?
Here are the top six (in no particular order):
Of course, there are other benefits. For example, if you want to book white-water rafting, rainy season is the time to do it. Scuba diving? Great in the rainy season. Etc. etc. There’s
Wondering where to stay? We have dozens. Here are three you’ll love – and that still have availability for September and October 2021.
Within the heart of Tamarindo but absconded to a world of whispering pines, cool waters, and twinkling lights, Casa Calico is a vacation paradise. This beautiful walled property features private gardens and a refreshing pool, shaded patio and chef’s kitchen, generous outdoor living and graceful interiors – everything you seek (and probably more).
The property is separated into the main home, with three bedrooms, and an independent poolside casita, perfect for multigenerational travelers and small groups. You will all love Casa Calico’s proximity to the beach – a few minutes, and you’re there! – but what we think you’ll love most is the sheer ambiance.
A true secret garden, Casa Calico makes Costa Rica feel like your own personal wonderland. Have breakfast surrounded by tropical gardens. Spend hours (and entire days) lounging poolside. And be sure to earmark an afternoon for the deeply shaded, covered patio – the perfect spot to watch the storm roll in and to delight in tropical rainfall – to not just a pitter-patter, but a full drumbeat on the roof over your head.
Casa Calico also offers 100 Mbps high-speed WiFi internet, battery backout (modem and router), and access to a portable wireless router, upon request.
Paradise is real, friends. And you’ve found it. Right here, at the nexus of national park and rolling mountain range, spectacular beaches and wildlife estuary. Right here, at Casa Xanadu, a tropical paradise within a tropical paradise, overlooking Las Baulas National Marine Park, Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge, the Tamarindo Wildlife Estuary, and both Tamarindo Beach and Playa Grande.
A convergence of all things wonderful. And speaking of wonderful things, it’s right here, surrounded by rare tropical dry forest – one of the world’s last remaining swaths – that Casa Xanadu rises from the hillside and promises the perfect home base for all your September and October adventures. Yes, even storm-watching. There’s no better perch than this terrace!
So, lounge in the infinity pool, set your watch for epic sunsets, and never grow tired of the spectacular Pacific vistas. Walk softly, listen and look closely, and the howler monkeys, parrots, and butterflies will join you!
Where would you be, if you could somehow drop a secret garden by the sea – a private paradise, steps from crashing waves and soft sands, yet secreted into a lush hidey-hole that feels like it’s just for you?
We think you’d be right here, at Ibis Condo #2, a quiet two-bedroom condo both cozy and expansive. Artisanal wood ceilings and granite countertops, plush beds and a beachy color palette, a private outdoor patio and lush landscaping welcome you to this lovely rental. We promise, the patio and gardens are a lovely place to watch the raindrops fall!
Of course, when you rent Ibis #2, you’re reserving more than a home-away-from-home. Because here, you also have access to community: executive access to the Langosta Beach Club, where you’ll enjoy the use of a luxurious and oceanfront infinity pool, with its languid pool loungers, full-service poolside bar, private cabanas, fitness center, and beachfront restaurant.
And you’re also a short walk to Tamarindo’s vibrant restaurant offerings and nightlife, as well as a full menu of adventure activities, shopping, surfing beaches, and more. Welcome to exactly where you want to be.
