Travel on a Budget: 6 Tips to Save on Your Tamarindo Vacation

aerial view Playa Grande Costa Rica 16 9

At its best, traveling on a budget is an exhilarating challenge: a chance to explore the world a little longer, enjoy a little more, and squeeze in a little more authenticity. And if that sounds like your kind of Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation, then we’re here to help you identify a few great ways to pinch your colones, discover Costa Rica, and choose the best things to do in Tamarindo for you.

Tip #1: Cook at “Home”

budget spring break in Costa Rica cook kitchen 16 9
Pictured: The kitchen at Ibis Condo #1

By far, one of the easiest ways to travel on a budget is to cook some of your own meals, rather than ordering in or dining at a restaurant. And that’s where your vacation home’s kitchen comes in clutch.

That said, let’s not forget that this is still a Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation – and no one’s saying that food prep is among the best things to do in Tamarindo! We recommend preparing most of your breakfasts, as there’s a certain level of relaxation already built in to waking up late and preparing a lazy breakfast or brunch at home. Beyond that, go easy for lunch with easy-prep options, like sandwiches, pasta salad, fresh fruits, and other dishes you can prep in an instant.

Dinner is a great time to splurge on either a meal out or a meal in: You can find some incredible catch-of-the-day options, if you love seafood, as well as plenty of local and imported goods at our local grocery stores. Be sure to choose something that feels a little special; again, you’re on vacation! And vacation is a great time for special.

Tip #2: Book Last-Minute Tours

If you have your eye on a specific tour and didn’t book in advance, asking about last-minute availability and pricing is, in itself, one of the best things to do in Tamarindo. That’s because last-minute cancellations and empty spots can net you a decent discount, often in the neighborhood of 5-20%. (Note: Discounts won’t always be offered but when they are, they’re worth it! And it never hurts to ask.)

Tip #3: Ask for Group Rates

sunset in Guanacaste Costa Rica 16 9

If you’re traveling with a few people, last-minute bookings can a little harder to snag; after all, a tour might have one or two last-minute cancellations, but it’s unlikely that they’ll have space for eight of your nearest and dearest!

This is where group pricing comes into play: If you’re traveling as a group (usually, in the range of 6+ paying teens/adults), you may qualify for group rates. Depending on your desired tour, group rates may include a % discount, service upgrade, extras, or even a private tour! So, always ask what’s available.

Tip #4: Take Buses or Shared Transportation

Splashing out for a private driver – or even a rental 4×4, depending on the time of year – might be out of your budget. If that’s the case, then know that Costa Rica has good public transportation, as well as the budget-traveler’s all-time favorite: share shuttles!

Shared shuttles are essential ride-sharing for private transportation: Instead of reserving an entire vehicle, you reserve only your seat – usually, for about $40-$100 per way (depending on the route length, popularity, availability, stops, and more). If you’re a solo traveler or traveling as a couple, this can be an excellent budget option, pairing the comfort of private transportation with the budget of a much more affordable option. The route schedules are often more accommodating than public buses, too!

Tip #5: Enjoy Free Activities

natural beach tide pool

While so many online travel resources focus on paid activities as the best things to do in Tamarindo, the truth is that there is an entire world of free and nearly-free activities to enjoy here. Remember, this is the beach and what would a Tamarindo, Costa Rica vacation be without a beach day? Total cost: Free.

In addition to splashing in the waves, boogie boarding (boards supplied at some rentals!), cooling off in tide pools, and strolling the sand, Tamarindo has plenty of other fun to enjoy on a budget. From riding the estuary ferry and beach hopping to sea turtle watches and after-dark fire dancing on the beach, we have plenty of budget vacation favorites to fill your days and nights.

Tip #6: Shop the Markets

Costa Rica tropical fruits including mangosteen

Speaking of free by day and by night, a favorite way to while away the hours is at one of Tamarindo’s markets, easily one of the best things to do in Tamarindo for budget travelers!

Tamarindo Farmer’s Market

If you want to blend cultural attraction with cheap eats, then look no further than the Tamarindo farmer’s market, or fería, held Fridays in Playa Grande and Saturdays in Tamarindo. In addition to super inexpensive fruits and vegetables – grab a bunch to try! – you’ll also find inexpensive prepared foods, including stuffed empanadas, tortillas, and chorreadas (a corn-and-cheese tortilla, very filling!).

Tamarindo Night Market

If you want to tap into the true flavor of Tamarindo, Guanacaste then you can’t miss the Tamarindo Night Market. Open every Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., the area’s favorite after-dark market is part dining, part entertainment, and part market.

Walk in and you’ll find dozens of local artisan vendors, who sell everything from handcrafted jewelry to glass-bottled kombucha. There are fire dancers and DJs and traditional Costa Rican dancing, as well as other forms of entertainment, which pair very well with the market’s onsite restaurants and food vendors, who serve up everything from cheesy pizza and pork BBQ to empanadas and vegan options. Enjoy!

Where to Stay for Your Tamarindo, Costa Rica Vacation

One of the best things to do in Tamarindo begins before you even arrive: Rent a vacation home! Not only do vacation rentals add an extra layer of privacy and space to your time in Costa Rica, but they help you both save money (hi there, full kitchen and more!) and build in vacation extras (ex. a resort pool, beach gear, and more) that you’d have to pay for, anywhere else.

With that in mind, here are four recommendations to consider for your upcoming vacation:

Crystal Sands Penthouse 504

Playa Langosta | 3 Beds | 3 Baths | Sleeps 12

Crystal Sands Penthouse 504 rental Tamarindo Costa Rica 16 9

And when “sometimes” becomes “for this vacation,” Crystal Sands 504 delivers with a gorgeous penthouse, a spectacular Langosta Beach location, and Pacific Ocean views that stretch for as far as your eyes can see. Good thing you have that private balcony

When you can drag yourself indoors – and, we admit, it can be a challenge, when you’re here! – you’ll love your penthouse’s private hot tub (on the balcony!), breezy interiors, and gourmet kitchen. Don’t want to cook? That’s what the full-sized gas grill is for! (Grilling isn’t cooking, right??). And everywhere – even from the bedrooms – you’ll be able to enjoy your private ocean panoramas. Welcome to paradise!

Last-Minute Summer Plans? Yes, Please! Things to Do + Tamarindo Villas for Rent

beaches are the centerpiece to things to do in Costa Rica

Last-minute plans can be the best plans. From dreaming to doing, you can plan and then experience within a few short weeks! But to get from here to there, you’ll have to decide on the best things to do in Tamarindo and find Tamarindo villas for rent with last-minute availability.

Luckily, you’ve found this article and we have your answers!

Best Things to Do in Tamarindo This Summer

Rainy Tamarindo Sunsets 16 9
Rainy season is also sunset season!

Costa Rica is one of the world’s favorite destinations, thanks in large part to our vast biodiversity, gorgeous beaches, startling ecosystems, and wide range of activities and attractions. Here are a few of what we consider the best things to do in Tamarindo this summer:

Explore Our National Parks

Costa Rica is renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning natural landscapes. And there’s no better way to explore what makes us famous than on a visit to national parks, including Las Baulas National Marine Park (nesting leatherback sea turtles), Palo Verde National Park (incredible birdwatching & wildlife), Santa Rosa National Park (Costa Rican heritage & history), and Rincón de la Vieja National Park (active volcano attractions).

These parks offer opportunities for hiking, wildlife spotting, and discovering unique ecosystems. Our in-house, expert concierge can help recommend the right tour, day trip, or hike for your preferences and activity level! Get in touch.

Explore (& Relax on) Beautiful Beaches

aerial view Playa Grande Costa Rica 16 9

With hundreds of miles of coastline, it’s no secret that Costa Rica is blessed with pristine beaches, many of them lauded as some of the world’s “best beaches.” What you may not know is that many of Costa Rica’s other beaches are so-called secret beaches – tiny stretches of sand bordered by rocky cliffside and craggy coastline, where you can escape to a little slice of sand all your own.

Be sure to ask our concierge, Cris, for the best recommendations. Our coast is widely varied, so you’ll need a different recommendation for surfing than you would if you were seeking out tranquil tide pools. Whatever your pleasure, you can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, or simply relaxing by the shoreline.

Indulge Your Inner Adrenaline Junkie

Costa Rica is a paradise for adventure enthusiasts. Get your adventure fix with thrilling activities like zip-lining through the rainforest, white-water rafting through raging (or tame – your choice!) rivers, canyoning down waterfalls, or surfing world-class waves. You can also go mountain biking, kayaking, or horseback riding to explore our country’s natural beauty.

Discover Volcanic Wonders

Rincon-de-la-Vieja-Volcano

Costa Rica is home to several impressive volcanoes, among them the active Rincón de la Vieja, close to Tamarindo. The volcano and its eponymous park is a popular tourist destination, and is known for its volcano summit hike, hot springs, and many waterfalls, as well as volcanic attractions, including fumaroles, boiling mud pots, lava flows, a mini volcano, and more.

Wildlife Watching

As we’ve already discussed, Costa Rica is rightfully famous for our incredible biodiversity and abundant wildlife. If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing a sloth, a monkey, a macaw, or any other animal in the wild, then this is your chance! Take a guided tour or go on a self-guided adventure to spot fascinating wildlife, especially at national parks, wildlife refuges, and private reserves.

Engage in Sustainable Ecotourism

As a nation, we are proud to embrace our green reputation and initiatives in sustainable ecotourism. Take part in responsible, sustainable, and regenerative travel practices by supporting local communities, choosing Costa Rican tour guides, and participating in conservation initiatives. This way, you can experience our country’s natural wonders while contributing to their preservation.

RELAX!

natural beach tide pool

If “summer” to you aligns with a Northern Hemisphere summer – roughly, June through September – then know that this is also Costa Rica’s wet, or green season. And that means you can expect some daily rains.

While you’ll often see guides advising you visit during the dry season (December through April), the secret is that we love the green season. Most days, you’ll have glorious morning and early afternoon weather, followed by brief (think 15 minutes to 2 hours) rainstorms and then, if you’re lucky, vibrant rainbows. It’s beautiful!

What’s more, those afternoon rains offer a perfect reason to stay in and relax. Even better when “staying in” means staying at one of our Tamarindo villas for rent, where you’ll have private access to your choice of amenities. And speaking of…

Summer Stays: Tamarindo Villas for Rent (Last-Minute Availability)

Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste Packing List: What (and What NOT) to Bring

aerial view Tamarindo Playa Grande 16 9
Wondering what to pack for Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste? Add a sense of wonder to your list!

Packing for Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste is like packing for almost any other warm destination – except when it’s not. Over the years, we’ve learned a thing or two about what people think they need to pack vs. what they really need while they’re here.

Thankfully, there’s a lot of overlap. And, if you forget something, you can likely find a passable substitute in Costa Rica. But it may be hard to find. It may be expensive. And who wants to spend hours of their vacation hunting down hiking shoes, anyway?

And so, for all you clever, resourceful planners and packers out there, we’ve pulled together our list of what travelers most often forget to pack – and a few things you should remove from your suitcase, stat!

What to Bring: The What-Not-to-Forget List

Costa Rica hiking 16 9

For the sake of this post, we’ll skip over all the but-of-course! basics, like shirts and underwear and your passport. Instead, we’ve tried to pinpoint a few must-pack inclusions that you may not know you’ll need for your trip to Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste.

Because you may have remembered to pack only a few credit cards (and to notify your bank that you’ll be traveling. You may have rolled up some extra socks to account for fording rivers on your hikes. And you may have already packed your zip-on, zip-off pants/shorts. But have you remembered the following?

Quick-Dry and/or Cotton Clothing

Whether you’re staying in Tamarindo for your entire trip or are splitting your time between the beach, the mountains, and volcano country, you’ll appreciate having both quick-dry clothing (great for the rainforest, hiking, waterfall trails, the cloud forest, etc.) and cotton clothing (everyday wear and breathability).

Lightweight Rain Jacket or Windbreaker

Believe it or not, it can get chilly (only sometimes) in the evenings! So, even if you’re here during the dry season (roughly, December through April), it’s a great idea to pack a long-sleeved layer. And if you’re here when it might rain (May through November), then it’s a must to make it waterproof, so you can layer up if necessary.

Day Pack/Dry Pack

If you’re an adventurous traveler, then chances are very good that you’ll need a day pack (essentially, a small and lightweight backpack) during your travels. Many hikes, day trips, and other tours departing Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste will keep you busy for hours – hours during which you’ll be glad you packed plenty of snacks, water, extra camera batteries, etc. into your day pack. If you’re visiting during the rainy season, make it a waterproof day pack or a dry pack!

Comfortable Footwear (Multiple)

Unless you’re planning on spending your entire vacation at the beach and by the pool – and even then, in some cases! – then you’ll want to pack a few options for footwear. High on our list of recommendations are 1) closed hiking shoes (sneakers or boots) and 2) water shoes or sandals. Here’s why: Hiking shoes are essential to keeping your feet healthy and protected from jungle critters and water shoes make walking out onto the rocks a breeze at low tide. And whenever possible, you’re really going to walk out onto the rocks at low tide!

Sunblock + Insect Repellent

Both products are readily available in every supermarket, pharmacy, and many other points of sale throughout Costa Rica, but if you have sensitive skin or a favorite brand, do pack them! Specific products can be hard or, sometimes, impossible to locate here. Try to find a reef-safe sunblock for when you’re at the beach!

Hat + Sunglasses

We cannot emphasize enough how sunny Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste can be! It’s gorgeous, it’s lovely, and it’s strong. So, in addition to sunblock, be sure to pack your favorite hat (to protect the crown of your head, which we rarely sunblock but can burn, trust us!) and UV sunglasses.

Favorite Toiletries

Like sunblock and insect repellent, if you’re particular about your brands of toiletries (feminine hygiene products, contraceptives, etc.) and hygiene products (shampoo, conditioner, soap/body wash, face cleanser, contact lens solution, etc.), then be sure to pack them.

OTC + Prescription Meds

Costa Rica’s pharmacies are well stocked but they may not carry your specific prescription – or they may not be able to issue your medication without a local prescription. Err on the safe side and pack any over-the-counter and/or prescription medicines you may need while here.

Travel Surge Protector

You’re traveling with electronics. Protect your electronics!

What NOT to Bring: The Don’t-Waste-the-Space List

Rainy Tamarindo Sunsets 16 9
Rainy season is also sunset season! Know what you won’t need? Rainboots!

It’s 2023 and chances are excellent that you’ll be packing light – not just to avoid round-trip airline surcharges (although that’s definitely part of it) but also because, once you’re here, you may not have a ton of transportation storage space (especially on shared shuttles, inexpensive private transportation, and many rental vehicles).

So, packing space is at a premium. Luckily, Costa Rica is warm so your clothes are relatively small and lightweight. You’re already ahead of the game! But as you pack those storage cubes, roll clothing as tightly as possible, and economize your luggage space, consider removing the following from your bags:

More Than One Suitcase

While we’re on the topic of packing light and limited transportation storage, we highly recommend traveling with a maximum of one checked bag and one carry-on per person (plus a personal item). Not only will this provide savings at the airline counter, but it’ll also lighten your load (literally) while traveling in-country.

Traveler’s Checks

Does anyone still use traveler’s checks in 2023? If so, they don’t live in Costa Rica. (Most of the country doesn’t even accept personal checks, FYI!)

Guidebooks

We love guidebooks when we begin planning a trip, but the truth is that those books are hefty and require precious packing space and weight. If there’s a guidebook you love, consider purchasing its digital version and carrying it on your phone.

✅ And remember! When you book one of our condos or vacation homes, you secure the complimentary services of our in-house concierge (a real, live guidebook, so to speak!), who can advise you every step of the way – before and during your trip.

Expensive Jewelry

You’ll quickly find that Costa Rica isn’t a fancy jewelry kind of place. What’s more, most travel guidance advises to leave the good stuff at home. So, choose some versatile earrings, swap out your wedding ring set for a titanium band, etc. – pare down to the bare minimum, and enjoy zero worries during your time here with us in Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste!

High Heels

Costa Rican roads and sidewalks – and often, what sidewalks? – are not made for high heels. Choose healthy ankles and less frustration, and pack your favorite flats or dressy sandals.

Rainboots

While we’re on the topic of footwear, we’re often asked if we’d recommend packing rainboots. The answer is no! They’re bulky and usually not terribly comfortable for long periods; instead, choose waterproof hiking sneakers or hiking boots.

A 100% Full Suitcase

Be sure to leave some space to take home gifts and souvenirs!

Spring Break in Costa Rica on a Budget: Money-Saving Tips for Lodging, Activities & More

surfing-at-Playa-Grande-Costa-Rica 16 9

If you’re planning your spring break in Costa Rica – and especially if you’re planning spring break 2023 – then it’s time to get moving. Spring is just around the corner and accommodations are filling up, activities are selling out, and travel is kicking into high gear.

No stress, though. We’ve pulled together a few of our favorite tips for spring break on a budget: what to do (and what not to do), what free + low-cost activities to enjoy, and where to stay – yes, even if you’re looking for availability this year! So, let’s get started.

Budget Tip #1: Skip the Rental Car

There’s no other way to say it: Rental cars can be a major expense in Costa Rica. (Think: $100-$250+ per DAY, including insurance.) So, if you’re on a budget and don’t plan to travel up and down the coast every day, then you may want to skip this one in lieu of a few more budget-friendly alternatives.

So, what are those alternatives? We recommend starting with a combination of airport transportation, private drivers/taxis/Uber, public buses, bike rentals, and walking, depending on where you’re headed. Or, if you’re truly an independent, adventurous spirit with a need to feel the wind in your hair, ask our concierge, Cris, to find you an all-in rental car price to fit your budget. Get in touch and we’ll be happy to help you figure it all out!

Budget Tip #2: Rent a House!

Unless you’re traveling on a true shoestring and staying in shared hostel rooms, then “budget” probably falls into the realm of $75-$100/bedroom/night. And if that’s the case, then there’s no better buy for your vacation buck than a vacation home.

Here’s why: In addition to offering more spacegreater privacy, and private amenities, vacation homes are often less expensive than their hotel counterparts. For example, several of our Tamarindo vacation homes are under $100/night per bedroom – and they offer a lot more than a bedroom (in a lot more space than your standard 200-square-foot hotel room).

Budget Tip #3: Cook “at Home”

budget spring break in Costa Rica cook kitchen 16 9
Pictured: The kitchen at Ibis Condo #1

One of the greatest budget hacks of a vacation home for your spring break in Costa Rica? Your in-house kitchen! So, use it. Visit one of our local grocery stores – the trip can be a cultural and enjoyable experience, in its own right! – and stock up on both your favorites and a few new fruits, veggies, and other ingredients.

You’ll find that cooking at home, whether it’s just a few of you or a whole group, is much more economical than eating out. That’s because staples like coffee, milk, fruit, fish, eggs, bread, pasta, vegetables, and even Costa Rica’s national beers are not expensive.

Budget Tip #4: When You Do Eat Out, Look for Sodas

If you’re going to eat out, start at sodas, Costa Rica’s version of a family-owned diner. No, you won’t usually find them beachfront or with spectacular ocean views, but you will find great food at a great price.

Sodas typically service traditional Costa Rican fare, and the most popular, traditional, and filling of them all is the casado, which “marries” (casado means “married”) many of Costa Rica’s most traditional dishes, including your choice of protein (beef, chicken, pork, or eggs/fried cheese for the vegetarians), rice, beans, salad, and fried plantains, often served with a small fruit juice. For $3-$5 (at local sodas, not tourist traps), you cannot beat this cheap and filling meal!

Tip #5: Fill Up on Free + Low-Cost Activities

leatherback sea turtle Costa Rica 16 9

Costa Rica offers an incredible array of vacation adventures. The problem is, they’re not what anyone would call cheap. That doesn’t mean they’re not worth it, though! Our top tip: Prioritize a few of the pricier adventures you’d most love to do, then round out your itinerary with free and low-cost activities.

These include:

  • Boogie Boarding/Body Boarding: If you don’t want to rent a surfboard (about $20/day), then consider buying a cheap boogie board (about $15-$20 total) or, if you want to go completely free, body surf! Tamarindo’s waves are for everyone.
  • Beach Evenings: Tamarindo is a party town (ideal for spring break in Costa Rica!) but here, it’s less total bacchanalia and more incredible ambiance. That includes absolutely jaw-dropping nightly sunsets (5:30 to 6:30 p.m., year-round) at the oceanfront, followed by toes-in-the-sand fire dancing at TamaOnda (7:00 to 7:30 p.m.).
  • Beach Hopping: You don’t have to have a car to go beach hopping! Hop a bus, grab a taxi or Uber, or do the Sunday Pool & Beach Crawl (includes a party bus) and see as much of the area beaches as you can. Reserve at least $1 to buy an ice-cold pipa (fresh coconut water) at each!
  • WhatSUP: Stand-up paddle boarding is a great way to get out on the ocean and do something exciting, adventurous, and challenging. And at $20 for a board rental, it’s also one of the better deals in town, when it comes to not-your-standard activities.
  • Wander the Tamarindo Market and Night Market: By day or by night, Tamarindo’s markets (Night Market: Thursdays only, from 6 to 9 p.m.) offer cheap eats, artisan goods, and a great atmosphere that will put a huge smile on your face without gouging your wallet.
  • Take a Turtle Tour: One of Tamarindo’s best-kept budget secrets? If the leatherbacks are nesting at nearby Las Baulas National Marine Park, then you can observe turtle nesting for a mere $25 entrance fee. And it’s worth every penny!

Of course, there are many, many more low-cost and even free to almost-free activities here in Tamarindo. Really, it’s the beach! You can make a day of strolling the sand, bathing in the tide pools, walking the rocks at low tide, and sipping cold coconut water beneath the palms.

Top Budget-Friendly Things to Do in the Tamarindo, Guanacaste Area

aerial view Tamarindo Playa Grande 16 9

Tamarindo, Guanacaste is one of Costa Rica’s most visited towns. You wouldn’t be the first to wonder if it’s also affordable.

Turns out, it is! While there are certainly plenty of tours and experiences you could splash out on, there are also plenty of budget-friendly Tamarindo things to do. From surfing and beach-hopping to sea turtle nesting and partying, Tamarindo offers up a full menu of free and inexpensive sights, experiences, and things to do for budget travelers.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Surf!

surfing in Tamarindo Guanacaste 16 9

It’s no secret that Tamarindo’s surf is epic, so it’s also no secret that this is a must-do activity while you’re in town.

What you may not know is that surfing can also be a budget activity in Tamarindo, Guanacaste, thanks to inexpensive board rentals: Offered up and down the beach for about $10-$20 a day, you can grab a board of your very own and catch the waves to your heart’s content. Be sure to check out these top beginner Tamarindo surf breaks and intermediate/advanced surf breaks.

Ride the Estuary Ferry

Sometimes, it’s the little things! Located at the north end of town, Tamarindo’s estuary ferry is about as much fun as can be had for about $1-$2. This little boat will ferry you across the river mouth – a wise choice, given that crocs can lurk here! – and over to Playa Grande, where you can spend a day beachcombing.

… And Relax on Playa Grande

aerial view Playa Grande Costa Rica 16 9

While we’re on the topic of Playa Grande, this is a great place to spend a morning, an afternoon, or even an entire day.

Even though it’s a literal hop, skip, and a jump from downtown Tamarindo, Playa Grande is often uncrowded and quiet. Here, you can surf, stroll, or simply enjoy beach life. Bonus: there are several restaurants, cafes, and even a brewery (Las Olas Brewing) on Playa Grande, so you can truly while away in the day with not a care in the world.

Go Beach Hopping

We’re willing to bet the beaches are a big part of the reason you’re here in Costa Rica and specifically in Tamarindo, Guanacaste. So, why not take a day (or three) to beach hop around the coast?

If you want to go full budget traveler, then you can grab your banana bike and pedal your way to the best beaches on the coast. Or, if you feel like splashing out, rent a car, hire a driver, or call a taxi/Uber to shuttle you around.

Experience Sea Turtle Nesting

green sea turtle 16 9

Sea turtle nesting is one of our top life experiences, if you’d like to call it that. There is just something incredibly special and mesmerizing about watching these ocean giants lumber to shore, dig a pit, and lay hundreds of future turtles. Of course, this is also one of our region’s most critical preservation activities, as all Costa Rican sea turtle species are considered endangered. So, there are many great reasons to add this to your itinerary.

Something to note is that the most common location for sea turtle nesting is Ostional Wildlife Refuge, which is located 90 minutes south of Tamarindo, and therefore requires either an expensive tour or transportation to get there. If you’re on a tight budget, we recommend trying to spot leatherback sea turtles at Las Baulas National Marine Park, located right here in Playa Grande. The sightings are not as consistent and the turtles are not nearly as numerous, but when timed right, it’s an equally moving sight and experience.

Note that you must take an official tour (the only legal way to visit the turtles), which runs around $25-$35.

Visit the Tamarindo Night Market

If you want to tap into the true flavor of Tamarindo, Guanacaste then you can’t miss the Tamarindo Night Market. Open every Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., this local mainstay is part dining, part entertainment, and part market.

Learn to SUP

SUP paddle boarding Tamarindo Guanacaste 16 9

If you’re looking for a little extra challenge in your vacation, we strongly recommend giving stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) a try!

This now not-so-new water sport is an incredible balance (literally) of equilibrium, core strength, and mettle – and it is hugely enjoyable, to boot! You’ll need only a SUP board (similar to a surfboard) and a paddle, a calm(ish) ocean, and a desire to explore. Paddle out, stand up, and start paddling: The wide world of the Pacific awaits!

Embrace Sunday Funday / Sunday Pool & Beach Crawl

Tamarindo is known as a destination for fun – and luckily, much of that fun can be enjoyed on a budget!

Case in point: Sundays in Tamarindo. You’ll have your choice of Sunday Funday, which is held on Sundays beginning at 11:30 a.m.; the weekly event is a pool party with live music, plus a free boat and shuttle included. It’s always a fabulous time!

We can also recommend the weekly Pool & Beach Crawl, also on Sundays, which begins with a 12-1 p.m. pre-party at Sharkys. Next up, join your fellow beach-crawlers to board a recycled U.S. school bus (yep, it’s exactly as you imagine it!) to crawl down the coast, explore some littler-known stops, and grab a drink at each. It culminates in oceanfront music, live entertainment, beach volleyball, and a bonfire at happy hour. And then, of course, a bus ride home!

Watch the Sunset

sunset in Guanacaste Costa Rica 16 9

There’s something to be said about the best things in life being free. One major point in favor of this maxim is a Tamarindo sunset: Brilliant almost every night of the year, this daily event is a favorite for everyone who has ever been to Tamarindo, Guanacaste.

We recommend hitting the beach around 5:00 p.m. to find your favorite spot. (Sunset is around 5:30 to 6:15, year-round.) Grab a seat, dig your toes into the sand, and simply enjoy the sight, as the tropical sun kisses the horizon and sets the sky ablaze in a fiery show of pink and purple, orange and yellow.

Party!

Look, there’s no beating around the bush here: Tamarindo is known for its joie de vivre! We love a good party and, therefore, a good party always seems to find its way to Tamarindo.

So, when you’re low on funds but big on fun, we recommend walking downtown to find a party that meets your vibe. Whether you’re as mellow as jazz or high-energy like techno, you will always find a bar, restaurant, or club that’s only as expensive as the drinks you order.

Hit the Food Trucks

Why are food trucks such fun? We can’t quite put our finger on it but still we know it to be true!

Luckily, we now have the Jardín de Tamarindo, aka the Tamarindo Garden – a garden of food trucks, that is! Here, you can much, savor, and sample everything from budget-friendly Costa Rican ceviche and humongous waffles to cheesy tequeños and noodly stir fry. It’s an international smorgasbord and we love it!

Located just 10 minutes (on foot!) to Tamarindo beaches, this eco-villa has a green soul and a story to tell: For more than 25 years, its builders have helped protect and reforest Costa Rica’s rainforests and now, they have built an incredible home with a low carbon footprint, including solar-heated water, solar-powered energy, water recycling, and a highly biodiverse garden to support birds and mammals.

Inside and out, you’ll spot no shortcuts: Villa Motmot is a celebration of modern and environmentally friendly design. As an example, each of the home’s six bedrooms features a king bed, smart TV, and A/C; the tropical gardens host not only wildlife but also a 12 x 7 meter Boule court for Boccia and Petanque; and the rooftop deck sprawls over 100 square meters (1,080 square feet).

Guide to Our Top Tamarindo Restaurants & Happy Hours

Pangas Beach Club Tamarindo nightlife

Food and drink are one of the greatest joys of travel: New flavors, new ingredients, and new takes on the flavors and ingredients you already know and love. And yet, it can be challenging to narrow down your options to the select few you’ll have time to sample while visiting. With that in mind, these Tamarindo restaurants and happy hours represent some of our favorites in and around town.

Tamarindo Restaurants

restaurant service in Tamarindo

Tamarindo is a veritable smorgasbord of world cuisines making your personal choice from among the best restaurants in Tamarindo all the more challenging. To get you started on your way to guaranteed deliciousness, here are a few of our favorites.

El Chiringuito Tamarindo

Phone: +506-2438 9569

When you want to chase the sunset, El Chiringuito promises to be one of your favorite stops! Located on a quiet stretch of coastline, this beachfront gem promises incredible food and delicious flavors – everything from octopus kebabs and whole grilled snapper to meat carpaccio and kid-friendly chicken fingers. Been out fishing? They’ll even cook up your catch of the day!

El Sapo Ristopizza

Phone: +506-2249-5432

In answer to anyone who has ever said that you can’t enjoy the best of two worlds, we present El Sapo, both a creative pizzeria and an imaginative cocktail bar! Because here, one of our favorite Tamarindo restaurants earns its cred with its familiar pies and the chef’s special fried pizza (you read that right! FYI, it’s similar to a calzone), or the option take your palate into fine dining territory with the Master Chef pizza, (mozzarella cheese, fresh mushrooms, and white truffle oil), peppered mussels, and a host of other dishes. Don’t forget to pair it with a cocktail!

Fish and Cheeses

Phone: +506-4700-6947

You had us at fish and cheese! And while that’s true, Fish and Cheeses truly aims to please, with a full menu of fresh fish and Italian cheeses that pair beautifully with fresh, homemade pasta, authentic Italian sandwiches, hand-tossed pizzas, bistro fair, and some of the best lasagna in Costa Rica. In town for the weekend? Fish and Cheeses also serves up live music, every Friday!

Nogui’s

Phone: +506-2653-0029

Gracing a gorgeous slice of Tamarindo beachfront, Nogui’s is one of those jack-of-all-trades places that somehow seems to master it all, too. For here, in addition to offering one of the choicest locations for Tamarindo restaurants, you’ll also discover some of the most delicious (and yet, decidedly un-fussy) seafood in town: shrimp & pineapple kebabs, lobster tacos, and fried or grilled fish to pair with steak, chicken, and a variety of vegan options.

NOI Bistro

Phone: +506-2653-1376

Disguised as an unassuming bistro, NOI is a dining superhero that can take you from breakfast to sunset – and then, straight into cocktails! Home to the kind of relaxed atmosphere you crave while on vacation, here you’ll find everything from stacks of breakfast pancakes and lunch sandwiches to ultra-fresh Costa Rican ceviche, tacos, tuna tartare, and vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, to boot. Don’t miss out on their now-famous chocolate volcano dessert!

Pangas

Phone: +506-2653-0024

We’ve said it many times before and we’ll likely say it many times again: Pangas is, hands down, one of our favorite Tamarindo restaurants! There’s a lot to love here, from its mouthwatering seafood and beachfront location to its brilliant sunsets and evenings beneath the twinkling lights. Because Pangas is all about great food in the perfect ambiance: at the foot of the Pacific, beside the estuary, and with your choice of sandy outdoor or refined indoor seating.

Happy Hours in Tamarindo

Patagonia-Restaurant-Tamarindo

If you’re looking for the best places to crack open a cold one or try out a Costa Rican cocktail, then these happy hour spots (many, also our current favorite Tamarindo restaurants) offer beach views and a wonderful ambiance matched only by their creative drink menus.

El Chiringuito Tamarindo

Phone: +506-2438 9569

In addition to some of Tamarindo’s best seafood, El Chiringuito has built itself some serious happy hour buzz. And for good reason! Located directly on the beach, this is one of our favorite local sunset spots – the perfect location to dig your toes into the sand and watch the sun go down, a $2 beer or $5 drink in hand. Plus, you can stay for dinner (see above) and enjoy some of the best seafood you’ll find at Tamarindo restaurants!

Nogui’s

Phone: +506-2653-0029

If you crave the sand between your toes and the Pacific at your feet, then you owe yourself a visit to Nogui’s at sunset. For here, where sun meets sea, Nogui’s offers not just incredible seafood (including a smattering of happy hour-appropriate finger foods!) but also great drinks, including 2×1 specials and $5 wine every night, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. That said, we firmly believe that almost any Nogui’s drink special pairs perfectly with grilled shrimp kebabs. Just saying…

Pangas

Phone: +506-2653-0024

When you’re seeking an elevated happy hour experience, Pangas is the place to be: The breeze in your hair, the surf at your feet, and the outdoor lights to create that perfect evening ambiance. Even better, their already excellent drinks menu is even better during happy hour (4:30 to 6:30 p.m.), when you can find 2×1 deals. If you can, definitely stay long after sunset and order a special meal. If you’re short on time, plan on just apps!

Patagonia Argentinian Grill

Phone: +506-8800-0002

While Patagonia doesn’t strictly offer a regular happy hour, they do run regular 2×1 margarita specials – and they’re not stingy with the hours, either, as they typically run all afternoon, when available. Beyond that, we love Patagonia for its cozy ambiance, authentic Argentinean cuisine, and great drinks menu, which offers local beer, clerico and sangria by the pitcher, and a full menu of tried-and-true cocktails, including mojitos, caipirinhas, daiquiris, and more.

Wild Panda

Phone: +506-2653-1073

A bar and grill with just the right amount of sass, Wild Panda goes long (verrry long) on its beer and hand-crafted cocktails. And we love it! From its local and craft beer options to house wines and tropical cocktails – think pineapple & passion fruit mojitos and a sunset sangria with seasonal fruits – this is a place that aims to please. And please you, it will, thanks to all-day 2×1 specials that include their Panda signature cocktails: frozen mojitos, frozen watermelon & vodka, and frozen pineapple & rum. They also offer $2 beer and $3 wine for daily happy hour, 3 to 5 p.m.

What To Do in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste – 5 of Our Must-Experience Favorites!

Tamarindo vacation outdoor activities sunset sailing

If you’re planning a Costa Rican vacation, getaway, or escape, you’re likely also wondering what to do in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste. Or rather, what, of all the many things you might like to do, you absolutely should not miss. Because there’s a lot you’ll do here, but much more that you won’t. (This is why we recommend a second, third, and tenth visit…)

And, while we’ve covered many of our favorite things to do in Tamarindo (more than once), we thought we’d share an updated list. Because there are never enough suggestions, are there? Plan well and then enjoy to the fullest!

  1. Visit A National Park (or Three)

Rincon-de-la-Vieja-Volcano

You’ve heard of Costa Rica’s stellar ecological reputation, but did you know that much of our success is due to exceptional conservation efforts? In fact, more than 25% of Costa Rica is protected within wildlife refuges, nature preserves, and private parks – an entire one-quarter of our biodiversity that can only be explored within our parks.

And so, we make our first suggestion: Carve out a day or two to explore the national parks that most spark your imagination. They’re rugged, they’re breathtaking, and they’re wildly different from the parks you have at home. And, did we mention, they’re a great deal at just $10 per person? Explore to your heart’s content!

Among our favorite (and closest) national parks in Guanacaste, you’ll find (in alphabetical order):

  • Barra Honda National Park: Costa Rica’s subterranean national park, home to 70 million years of geological history that formed an underground cave system.
  • Diriá National Park: A bit of a national secret, this park houses primary forest (rare) and tropical dry forest (rarer still) – both important wildlife habitats, including for our endangered species.
  • Guanacaste National Park: A biologically important habitat bridge and a critical habitat for migratory/resident birds and Costa Rica’s big cat species, including jaguars and pumas.
  • Las Baulas National Marine Park: Speaking of critical habitats for endangered species, this coastal park (located right here, in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste) houses important nesting beaches for the endangered leatherback sea turtle!
  • Palo Verde National Park: A 45,000-acre wonderland and critical wetland habitat, home to 15 distinct ecosystems, some of Costa Rica’s largest bird populations, and other bucket-list species.
  • Rincón de la Vieja National Park: Welcome to an active volcano and all its wonders, including boiling mud, hot springs, min-volcanoes, belching fumaroles, and more!
  • Santa Rosa National Park: Home to both Costa Rican history and natural wonders, here you’ll learn about fillibusters and butterflies (an incredible 4,000+ species!) alike.
  1. Enjoy the Nightlife in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste

Pangas Beach Club Tamarindo nightlife

Tamarindo lives by a motto – “surf, eat, and have fun” – and nowhere is that more evident than in our nightlife. You can literally go from the surf, into your favorite oceanside restaurant, and continue the evening from there!

When it comes to Tamarindo nightlife, this is the kind of place where you don’t really have to seek it out; it’ll find you. There’s always a restaurant, a bar, a club, or a beach party to enjoy! That said, we do have a few suggestions, including the Tamarindo Night Market, where you’ll enjoy live music, international food, and artisan vendors; Tuesday night salsa dancing at Utopia, home to merengue, salsa, and other beats; and Twilight at Pangas Restaurant, when the sunset glows brilliant and the twinkle lights come on.

Need more? Check out our guide to Tamarindo nightlife.

  1. Explore the Pacific

surfing in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

It’s no secret that the Pacific Ocean is a big reason why you’re here: Coastal landscapes, soft sands, and sapphire waters beckon you to rest, relax, and enjoy all the ocean has to offer. And it’s all right here, in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste.

And there is so much to do (and much of it, on a budget!) that you could fill an entire vacation with just the Pacific. And with that in mind, here are a few of our favorite things:

  • Surfing & SUP: Whether you’re renting a board or taking a lesson, the Pacific is a great place to test your skills and mettle on the waves. And don’t worry, there’s always a slice of beach and surf perfect for your skill level (whatever it may be)!
  • Catamaran Sailing: One of our top musts, this is an experience worth the splurge. Book an afternoon sail and you’ll boat out to a quiet snorkeling and swimming spot before heading toward the horizon for one of the world’s best sunsets.
  • Scuba or Snuba: Another worth-the-splurge experience, scuba (and its no-experience-required sibling, snuba) take you under the ocean’s surface to explore underwater worlds that will have you in awe.
  • Ocean Kayaking: Take to the waves in a kayak built for the sea! You can paddle just for the fun of it or, if you’re more goal-oriented, set your sights on some of Tamarindo’s secluded beaches and out-islands.

Discover more of our favorite area activities, including those by sea!

  1. Reserve a Beach Day

Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste area beaches

Speaking of the Pacific and your budget, it doesn’t get much better than spending a day on the beach. Pack your towel, grab a beach chair (ask if your vacation rental includes them!), and head out to your favorite slice of sand for a day by the waves.

As you enjoy the sun, bury your toes in the sand, and wade out into the ocean, be sure to save $1 or $2 for a fresh pipa, or coconut-encased coconut water, fresh from the tree and ice cold! It’s one of our favorite things on a warm Costa Rican afternoon.

  1. And Don’t Forget a Relaxation Day

Ibis Condo pool affordable Tamarindo condo rentals

We know, we know – what’s the difference between a beach day and a relaxation day?

This is how we see it: On a beach day, you’re at the beach. On a relaxation day, you stay home! And by home, we mean your Tamarindo vacation rental, which is equipped with many relaxing accouterments that are best enjoyed on a long, languid, tropical day.

And speaking of your home-away-from-home, here are two suggestions for your upcoming getaway:

Where to Stay (and Relax) in Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste

If we’re prioritizing relaxation and your Tamarindo experience, we’d recommend two of our favorites:

Ibis #8

Tamarindo | 2 Beds | 2 Baths | Sleeps 6

Ibis 8 condo living room Tamarindo

Speaking of relaxation, what if your vacation home came not just with beach proximity, convenience (it’s walking distance to Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste), luxury finishes, and a touch of paradise, but also with a beach club membership?

Welcome to Ibis #8, a quiet condo that comes with that aforementioned, ultra-relaxing beach club membership. And not just any beach club, but Langosta Beach Club, complete with a full fitness center, Pilates and yoga studio, a French restaurant, a great bar with a spectacular ocean view, and a large infinity-edge pool looking out at the warm Pacific.

Sunrise 3

Tamarindo | 3 Beds | 2 Baths | Sleeps 6

Sunrise 3 vacation condo in Tamarindo Costa Rica

Nicknamed “Bella Vida” – that’s “the Beautiful Life” – Sunrise 3 is a favorite for great reasons: It has Pacific Ocean views. The community has incredible amenities (and super relaxation opportunities). And this condo walking distance to everything!

That last part is important. Here in the land of year-round sun and pura vida, you usually have to make a choice: Do you want views or do you want convenience? Sunrise 3 defies the can’t-have-it-all trope and delivers both! Because, while you’ll have ocean views from your private terrace, you’re also in the heart of Tamarindo – no taxis, no Ubers, no asking for a ride… You can walk everywhere.

And then, there’s the community’s oversized resort pool, the ocean-view jungle terrace, and the incredible beach, which is located just a few steps across the street. Ahhh, paradise!

7 National Parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica for Your Explorations

Playa Grande Costa Rica
Playa Grande is located along the protected shores of Las Baulas National Marine Park, one of our top national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Did you know that more than a quarter of Costa Rica is protected by national parks, wildlife refuges, and nature preserves? It’s one of the nation’s primary conservation efforts and, over the last four decades, this push has transformed the country’s landscapes. And you can explore much of it, right here at these wildly diverse national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

They’re rugged. They’re breathtaking. They’re educational. And they’re memorable. They’re also a great deal, at about $10 per person. So you can explore, as much as you’d like. Enjoy!

In alphabetical order:

Barra Honda National Park

When you think about national parks, we’re betting you envision hikes and waterfalls and scenic vistas. And Barra Honda has those. But that’s not why you’re here.

Welcome to Costa Rica’s subterranean national park. That’s right: Barra Honda’s most treasured sights lie not above, but below the earth’s surface. Here, where 70 million years of shifting tectonic plates nudged ancient coral reefs and force soft limestone to mold and form, creating an underground cave system you’re now free to explore.

Fair warning, though – this isn’t the developed caving tourist experience you might be used to. This is true spelunking and unpolished caving: an authentic, real, and wholly exciting experience that, heads up, can also be challenging and raw. We highly recommend booking a guided caving tour, which will take you down into three of the park’s most explored sites: the Trap, Terciopelo, and Santa Ana caverns.

Diriá National Park

men-hiking-min

We feel like we’re spilling a secret with this one, but Diriá National Park (pronounced deer-ee-AH) is a little bit of a secret around these parts. (And even among national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica…)

We’re not quite sure why, though. Sure, it’s a bit off the beaten path but then, so many national parks are. And sure, it’s wild and rugged but then again, so many national parks are. And then, there’s the primary forest (rare) and tropical dry forest (rarer still), the incredible hikes and the wildlife you can find only here, thanks to these uncommon ecosystems and vast biodiversity… In other words, gorgeous, breathtaking, and exceptional reasons to visit.

Guanacaste National Park

jaguar-Panthera-onca-min

If you’re looking for a feel-good true story, then look no further than our province’s eponymous national park – if not the most visited, then one of the most appropriately named national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica!

In 1989, Dr. Daniel Janzen, a conservationist and evolutionary ecologist, founded the park to demonstrate that the world can “grow” national parks. His choice of site: this biologically important habitat bridge, which links the slopes of Orosi Volcano and Cacao Volcano to high-altitude cloud forest.

These diverse landscapes are more than your standard critical habitats: In addition to being a home for migratory and resident bird species, Guanacaste National Park also serves as critical habitat for Costa Rica’s big cat species – specifically, for the two largest, pumas and jaguars, both of which require extensive roaming grounds.

The conservationist in all of us will be happy to know that the park is regenerating faster than even Dr. Janzen predicted, evolving from near-barren cattle pasture into secondary forest, including lowland dry forest, cloud forest, and rain forest. You can even hike across the Continental Divide!

Las Baulas National Marine Park

You may have heard (or read) it called Marino Las Baulas National Park, but this one’s more accurate name is Las Baulas National Marine Park. That’s for two reasons: The first is that the park’s extensive acreage is mostly of the marine variety – 43,240+ acres (175 km2) ocean acres to just 1,900 acres (7.7 km2) on land – and because this park is a critically important nesting site for endangered leatherback sea turtles (in Spanish, baulas).

For here, this coastal wonderland welcomes nesting sea turtles every year – all the more important, given that there are so few of these nesting sites remaining in the world AND that leatherback populations are on the decline (hence, endangered). And if leatherback turtle conservation isn’t enough to get you there, know that this national park is also home to the biodiverse Tamarindo Estuary and its mangrove-lined canals, which are home to an incredible array of flora and fauna.

Palo Verde National Park

roseate-spoonbill

Our tour of Guanacaste now takes us into the rivers and watersheds that form one of the country’s most important wetland sanctuaries: Palo Verde National Park, a 45,500-acre wonderland that encompasses 15 varied habitats.

Located at the mouth of the Tempisque River, Palo Verde rises to form critically important habitats – especially for resident and migrant bird populations. In fact, if you’re a birder (or have any interest in birds at all, really), this is your new favorite place: the park’s salt ponds, rivers, marshes, mangroves, and other habitats can house up to 250,000 birds at one time. You read that right – a quarter of a million birds, all at once!

We’re talking bucket-list sightings, including roseate spoonbills and many species of egrets, grebes, ibis, and herons. The park also provides refuge to the largest concentrations of waterfall and shorebirds in Central America and is home to the country’s largest jaguarondi population (Herpailurus yagouaroundi, a small species of wildcat). This one’s a must for national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica!

Rincón de la Vieja National Park

Rincon-de-la-Vieja-Volcano

Costa Rican folklore tells the legend of a once-princess who, after her father threw her lover in Rincón de la Vieja’s volcanic crater, absconded to a mountaintop and lived out her life in solitude. There, she later developed healing powers, which infused and imbued the surrounding rivers with healing properties.

Whether the story is true or just a tale, we’ll leave up to you. What we can say is that Rincón de la Vieja Volcano and its eponymous national park do have mineral-rich, volcano-fed, natural hot springs and that the hot springs are rumored to have restorative properties.

And if a soak in the hot springs (and a slather with volcanic mud!) aren’t enough to tempt you up the mountainside, then know that the parks Las Pailas trail is one of our favorite hikes in Costa Rica. Yes, the whole country, not just Guanacaste. That’s because you’ll see things here that you can see nowhere else. We’re talking sights to the tune of boiling mud pots, a mini-volcano, boiling hot springs (not for humans!), belching fumaroles, seasonal waterfalls, and much more.

Santa Rosa National Park

green-sea-turtle-1030x773
Three species of sea turtle nest at Santa Rosa National Park

Rounding out our diverse selection of national parks in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, welcome to a slice of Costa Rican history and a natural wonderland. It’s two-for-one, here!

The park’s main draw is, undoubtedly, what once happened here. Back in the 1800s, shortly after Central America’s independence from Spain, filibusters arrived to annex Costa Rica. Armed with funds and colonialist attitudes, they hoped to claim the new nations for themselves. Costa Rica had other plans and here, on the site of what is now Santa Rosa National Park, brave Costa Ricans sacrificed their lives and won a pivotal battle against the filibusters, forcing them into Nicaragua and points further north (where Walker was eventually executed).

Today, you can walk the old battlefield and then head out into the park’s rugged sights, which include sea turtle nesting sites, tropical dry forest, and biodiversity that houses 4,000+ butterfly species, over a hundred mammals, and 250 bird species – more than one-quarter of Costa Rica’s 924+ bird species!
