Where to Stay in Tamarindo, Costa Rica: Unique Features & Amenities

aerial view of Playa Avellanas

When you think about where to stay in Tamarindo, there’s a whole host of considerations: the specific location, features, and amenities ripe for deliberation amidst your friends, family, and travel companions.

Beyond the standard – number of bedrooms and bathrooms, sleeping arrangements, and more – there’s an entire world out there of unique features and amenities. Because here, in Tamarindo, luxury means more than just space; it’s about experiences and memories you’ll treasure long after your tan fades.

From oceanfront and ocean-view locations to infinity pools, chef’s kitchens, and even private concierge services, where to stay in Tamarindo, Costa Rica is about carefully prioritizing and curating an indulgent slice of paradise as unique as your needs and wishlist.

Standout Amenity: Private Infinity Pools

When you’re looking at where to stay in Tamarindo, infinity pools are practically synonymous with luxury, and Tamarindo’s finest villas and vacation homes take this feature to the next level. It’s utter freedom to lounge in a pool where the edge merges with the Pacific, extending out to an infinite horizon, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature.

Costa Rica’s modern infinity pools are designed for total relaxation, often featuring varying depths (especially wonderful if you’re traveling with kids!), shallow sunbathing areas, and in-water lounge seating, so everyone can find their comfort zone. Some even have built-in children’s pools, making them family-friendly without compromising on elegance.

This amenity truly shines as the sun dips behind the horizon, you pour yourself a drink, and watch the sunset shoot out over the Pacific. Breathe, relax, and unwind, as the world around you slows to a tranquil pace.

Rare Feature: Oceanfront and Ocean-View Locations

aerial view Tamarindo Playa Grande 16 9

When you’re on vacation, the Pacific Ocean isn’t just a scenic photo op; it’s the heart of your very experience. You’ll swim, surf, snorkel, and stroll – the sea will serve as the omnipresent focal point of your stay.

Because true beachfront villas are rare and highly coveted, due to Costa Rica’s stringent maritime zone requirements, the Pacific in your backyard is a genuine luxury. If you’re searching where to stay in Tamarindo and can’t score an oceanfront property, fear not – our cliffsides and elevated terrain mean that spectacular ocean views are never far away.

You’ll find that many of our villa rentals sit perched on scenic hillsides, welcoming you to the vacation world of panoramic, 180º vistas that stretch across the sparkling sea, all while sipping coffee on your private terrace or watching the waves from your poolside lounge.

Major Plus: Gourmet Chef’s Kitchens + Private Chef Services

Costa-Rica-Private-chef

Whether you’re sampling local dishes or indulging in a special meal, food forms an integral part of any vacation.

Our vacation homes promise fully-equipped gourmet kitchens, whether you plan to craft a multi-course celebratory meal or simply want to brew your cup of morning coffee. And when you’re ready to be pampered, you can even arrange for a private chef to take the reins.

Your villa concierge (see below for details) can set up private chef services for a single special meal or for regular meals throughout your stay. So go ahead, indulge in everything from five-star cuisine to traditional Costa Rican flavors crafted with a touch of elegance – think fresh, tropical fusion dishes enjoyed on your private terrace as the sun dips below the horizon.

Stress Saver: Ultra-Fast WiFi and Connectivity

For those who blend work and play, just want to stay connected, or are traveling with tweens and teens (we see you, parents!), your where to stay in Tamarindo should always require fast WiFi.

The best of Tamarindo’s luxury villas offer high-speed WiFi and seamless connectivity, often with backup redundancy. Most of our villas provide streaming-quality internet, so you’re free to do everything from catching up on emails and staying in touch with family back home to streaming your favorite shows and family movies.

If you’re planning to work while here, or simply can’t be without the internet, know that some of our villas even offer backup battery systems to ensure reliable service during your stay. With ultra-fast WiFi, you can enjoy the best of both worlds – seclusion while connected – in Tamarindo.

Destination Fun: Exclusive Resort Amenities

Hacienda Pinilla golf and beach

If you’re looking to kick your vacation into high gear, know that several of our homes are located within exclusive resort communities like Hacienda Pinilla, offering an incredible range of amenities just beyond your doorstep.

Whether it’s a day on the golf course, a horseback ride along the beach, or a mountain bike ride through miles of scenic trails, these communities provide experiences that go above and beyond the typical vacation and standard vacation home.

Ultimate Indulgence: Spa Days and In-Home Wellness

Spa-Day-in-Tamarindo

When it comes to relaxation, we don’t think you can beat the indulgence and leisure afforded by in-villa spa services.

When you think about where to stay in Tamarindo, pair our concierge service with a villa that offers a dedicated space for wellness and relaxation. Because our belief is that you shouldn’t have to go far to pamper yourself (after all, you’ve already come all the way to Costa Rica!): Ask your concierge to schedule a day of in-villa spa services, from massages and facials to body wraps and mani-pedis, allowing you to indulge without leaving the privacy of your villa.

Imagine starting your day with a yoga session overlooking the ocean, followed by a private massage. Later, sip a glass of wine as you soak in your Jacuzzi and let the stresses of everyday life melt away. Whether you’re treating yourself to a mini-spa day or a full wellness retreat, consider this your official invitation to relax and rejuvenate.

The Key to Perfection: Your Dedicated Concierge

All of our guests have access to our exclusive 5-star concierge service.

When you book a home with Vacation Rentals Tamarindo, our world-class concierge will help you plan every detail of your stay. It’s our job to get to know you as well as we know Costa Rica, so we can help you plan the trip of your dreams, in the destination of your dreams. From airport transportation and private chef services to activities and restaurant recommendations, your concierge will work with you one-on-one, every step of the way.

Here are a few of our guests’ top Costa Rica luxury vacation requests:

  • Kitchen Stocking: Don’t want to run to the grocery store, first thing? We’ll be happy to pre-stock your villa’s pantry and fridge, per your shopping list, prior to your arrival.
  • Transportation: Whether you’d like airport pickup and private transportation, or simply want to coordinate on a vehicle rental, we’ll smooth out the details and have everything waiting upon your arrival.

  • Private Chef: For a special meal, a catered affair, or simply any night you don’t want to cook (but don’t want to go out to a restaurant, either), a private chef can be the perfect answer!
  • Spa Services: We can also help you book an array of spa services, including massages, mani/pedis, and more. Poolside massage, coming right up!

Family-Friendly Costa Rica: Planning a Tamarindo Vacation with a Baby

kids-ocean

Thinking about traveling to Costa Rica with a baby or toddler? Here’s one thing we know: You’re definitely in for an unforgettable adventure! And we’re here to help make it the good kind of adventure. Luckily, family-friendly Costa Rica is a pretty easy ask – almost everything is family friendly! – and Tamarindo, with its warm beaches, kid amenities, and laid-back vibe, is the perfect place for your family vacation, even (or especially) with a little one in tow.

Whether you’re seasoned family travelers or this is your first big trip as parents, we’ll fill you in on what you need to know to ensure a fun, safe, and stress-free experience in Costa Rica – especially here in Tamarindo.

Why Tamarindo is Perfect for a Family-Friendly Costa Rica Getaway

activities with kids in Costa Rica

If you’re not familiar, Tamarindo is located on the north-Pacific and is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, great area beaches (both surf and swim), and a vibrant travel culture. Add to that an abundance of nature, wildlife, and kid-friendly activities, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a dream destination for families.

So, let’s start with that – with a few of the top reasons why Tamarindo is perfect for you and your baby:

  • A Natural Playground: Tamarindo’s beaches are stunning, and many of them are calm enough to enjoy with your little one. Plus, with so much lush greenery and wildlife, you might even be lucky enough to spot sloths, monkeys, and other fascinating animals, all from the safety of your arms!
  • Fresh Food Galore: Costa Rica’s tropical climate means fresh fruit is abundant, perfect for baby-led weaning, whizzing up purees (check that your vacation home has a blender!), or finger foods. Whether you’re stopping at a local restaurant or shopping at the market, you’ll always find something fresh and delicious to feed your little one.
  • Welcoming Culture: Costa Ricans, or “Ticos,” are known for their warmth and hospitality. You’ll find that Ticos adore babies and often go out of their way to make your family feel comfortable, from making faces at your baby while waiting in a line, trying to get a giggle at a restaurant, or conducting almost any everyday activity.
  • Easy Access to Essentials: Traveling with a baby means you need access to baby gear, and Tamarindo has you covered. Whether you need to pick up diapers, formula, or baby food, the area’s supermarkets are well-stocked with familiar brands. (See below.)
  • Childcare Services: As an extremely family-friendly destination, of course Tamarindo has stacked on some parent-friendly services, including nanny/childcare. Be sure to ask our concierge, Cris, for more details1

Navigating Baby Gear in Tamarindo

kid-ocean-5

When you’re traveling somewhere far away with a baby, packing light is key! Fortunately, you can rent nearly everything you need before you even arrive in Tamarindo; just ask, and we’ll help you coordinate everything! From cribs and strollers to highchairs and car seats, baby gear rental companies will help make your stay as easy as possible.

Here are some tips to make baby gear logistics a breeze:

  • Rent a Car Seat: If you’re planning to rent a car, most rental companies offer car seats as part of the package. However, if you prefer to bring your own, Costa Rican taxis and shuttle services are happy to accommodate them.
  • Pack Light, Rent Gear: It’s easy to rent larger items like cribs and highchairs, which means you can avoid overpacking. Many of Costa Rica private villa rentals will either have these items on hand or can coordinate to secure rentals prior to your arrival.
  • Baby Carrier or Stroller?: Tamarindo is generally jogging stroller-friendly – note, you’ll definitely want an articulating front wheel to help navigate bumps and unpaved roads – especially if you plan to walk through town, go to the beach, or hit the supermarket. However, for hiking or exploring Costa Rica’s national parks, you’ll want to bring a baby carrier, as most trails are decidedly not stroller-accessible.

Feeding Your Baby

kids-ocean-3

Whether you’re breastfeeding, formula feeding, or a combination of both, you’ll find Tamarindo a breeze when it comes to feeding your baby. Here’s what to know:

  • Breastfeeding: In Costa Rica, breastfeeding is widely accepted, including in public, and you’ll likely see plenty of moms breastfeeding openly. Here, you can feel comfortable nursing your baby wherever you are, whether it’s on the beach or at a local café.
  • Formula Feeding: Formula is readily available in Costa Rican supermarkets, and you’ll find familiar brands like Enfamil and Nutramigen. Just be aware that the packaging may be in Spanish, and specific formulas (ex. for allergies) may not be available, so having a translation app can be helpful. You can also bring your own formula if you prefer the comfort of familiarity.
  • Dining Out with a Baby: Costa Rican restaurants are generally very family-friendly. Highchairs are available in most places, and baby-loving staff will often go out of their way to accommodate your baby’s needs. Local dishes like “casado” (a combination of rice, beans, salad, and meat) are nutritious and can be easily adapted for little ones. Don’t forget to pack a suction plate and sippy cup for your baby to make mealtime easier!

What to Do in Tamarindo with Your Baby

kids

Tamarindo’s laid-back vibe makes it such a great choice for your family-friendly vacation. Whether you want to explore the trails, hit the beach, or take a day trip to nearby attractions, there’s plenty to do not just with a baby in tow, but with your baby.

  • Hit the Beach: Tamarindo Beach offers soft sand and plenty of shade, shallow waters, and gentle tidepools, making it ideal for a day out with your baby. Pack sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water, and enjoy some playtime in the sand.
  • Nature Walks: While some of Costa Rica’s more rugged trails may not be suitable for strollers, there are plenty of easy nature walks where you can see wildlife like howler monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds. The nearby Las Baulas National Marine Park is a great spot for a relaxed stroll with your baby in a carrier.
  • Day Trips: Looking for a short day trip? Consider visiting the nearby beaches like Playa Avellanas or Playa Conchal. They’re both a quick drive from Tamarindo and offer calm waters that are perfect for families.

A Few Precautions to Take

One of the biggest worries for parents traveling with a baby is staying safe and healthy while abroad. The good news is that Costa Rica has excellent healthcare, clean water, and fresh, healthy food. That said, here are a few tips to ensure everyone stays healthy during your trip:

  • Bottled Water for Baby: While the tap water in Costa Rica is safe to drink, babies are often extra-sensitive, so we’d recommend giving your baby filtered or bottled water to avoid any tummy issues.
  • Stay Sun Safe: We’re pretty sure you’ll love Tamarindo’s sunny weather, but remember that the rays are strong here. (We’re close to the equator!) Be sure to pack plenty of baby-safe sunscreen, a sunhat, and lightweight clothing to keep everyone protected and comfortable in the heat.
  • Plan for Jet Lag: Depending on where you’re flying from, your baby may experience some jet lag. To help adjust to the new time zone, try to keep your baby on a consistent sleep schedule, and be flexible with naps during the day.

Where to Stay

Looking for family-friendly Costa Rica accommodations? We have just the homes.

One of the best ways to experience the country, and especially a coastal town like Tamarindo is in a Costa Rica private villa. Our vacation homes offer space, privacy, and the flexibility you need when traveling with a baby. Many villas come with private pools, kitchens (perfect for warming bottles or preparing meals), and even the option to hire a private chef or nanny/childcare service.

A Costa Rica private villa allows you to create a home-away-from-home environment, giving your baby a quiet space to nap while you relax by the pool or enjoy the sunset with your family. Plus, with easy access to baby rentals in Tamarindo (more on that later), you won’t have to bring a lot of extra gear.

Avoid the Rush: Why September is the Perfect Time to Plan You’re a Costa Rica New Year’s Eve

New Years Eve fireworks costa rica

As summer’s warmth begins to beat its retreat and we gather with family and friends on Labor Day, for one last taste of summer, it’s only natural to let your thoughts drift to the upcoming holiday season. Picture cozy traditions, joyful family gatherings, the festive magic of gift-giving… and perhaps, a little extra sparkle to your celebrations? Yes, we’re talking about a Costa Rica New Year’s Eve, in a tropical paradise, at one of our luxurious Guanacaste vacation rentals…

Because really, it’s the perfect time of year: December will be winding down and you’ll have time off, making it the perfect time to reflect, celebrate, and dream of an escape from the daily grind. And while many of your friends will be huddling indoors with Jack Frost nipping at their noses and snow shovels at the ready, why not trade that hometown chill for the warmth of a Costa Rican haven? We – and Costa Rica, at large! – are looking forward to wishing you a “feliz año nuevo” (“happy New Year!”)!

But here’s the scoop: If a dreamy Costa Rica New Year’s Eve is on your wish list, then it’s time to get cracking. Seriously, the best time to book is now – actually, yesterday would have been even better. Because, while it might seem early to start planning your New Year’s escape, it’s already late for Tamarindo. With the holiday season being the peak time for travel, many vacation homes, hotels, and other accommodations are snapped up well in advance – think a year or more ahead of time.

So, why should you get a jumpstart on booking your Costa Rica New Year’s Eve getaway this weekend? Yes, right now, this very second? Let’s dive into why planning ahead is not just smart but essential, and how you can make the most of the long Labor Day weekend.

Savor the Luxury of Time to Research and Compare

One of the biggest perks of booking early is having all the time you need to explore your options. Instead of scrambling at the last minute, you can leisurely research and compare destinations, accommodations, and activities. Whether you’re drawn to the vibrant buzz of Tamarindo, the serenity of Playa Langosta, or the luxurious offerings of Hacienda Pinilla, early planning means you get to weigh all your choices.

Ditch the Last-Minute Stress

Casa Blanca Tamarindo vacation rental

Holidays should be about joy, not stress. But let’s be real – last-minute planning can turn a dream trip into a frantic scramble. Flights fill up (and prices can skyrocket!), accommodations become scarce, and the pressure to find something last-minute can overshadow the excitement of your trip.

By booking your New Year’s Eve vacation now, you sidestep the stress of last-minute planning. No more frantic searches for flights or scrambling for a place to stay. Instead, you can kick back and imagine yourselfenjoying a tropical drink on the beach or hiking through rare dry forest, knowing everything is sorted.

Customize Your Trip to Perfection

Travel is all about making the experience uniquely yours. Booking early gives you – and our ace concierge, Cris – the chance to tailor every detail of your trip, without compromise. From arranging transportation to booking excursions, hiring a private chef, or setting up in-villa spa treatments, early planning lets you craft a personalized itinerary that hits all the right notes.

Picture this: Starting New Year’s Day with a sunrise yoga session on your beachside terrace, followed by a private catamaran tour where you can snorkel in crystal-clear waters. Or perhaps a guided hike through Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity, spotting exotic wildlife along the way. With plenty of time to plan, you can ensure your vacation is packed with the experiences that matter most to you.

Ring in the New Year Stress-Free in Tropical Bliss

Costa Rica for the holidays

Imagine this: Starting the New Year with your toes in the sand rather than a snow shovel in hand… The soothing sounds of the waves, a sun-drenched poolside, and the warm embrace of tropical sunshine create a setting of relaxation and renewal. Destination Perfection: Tamarindo Excursions, Beaches & Sometimes Nothing at All

Tamarindo sunsets during Costa Rica in September

What does a perfect day look like? To start, it doesn’t look like any one thing, because there are so many versions of perfect here in paradise. From being jam-packed with Tamarindo excursions to planning a day of almost nothing at all – nothing but relaxation, that is! – destination perfection is an achievable goal, every day of your trip.

For us, it’s all about blending exciting excursions and tours in Tamarindo, Costa Rica with ample opportunities for relaxation, sightseeing, and enjoying great company and delicious food. But if we had to nail down just one version of a perfect day, here’s what it might look like:

Begin with Beach Hopping

There’s a reason why so many Costa Rica digital nomads flock to the coast. Here’s one of them!

It’s no secret that our beaches are a major draw for your visit to Costa Rica, especially when you’re headed to Tamarindo. So, why not dedicate a morning (or more) to exploring this stunning coastline?

For the budget traveler, grab a banana bike and pedal your way to the best beaches around. If you prefer a more convenient option, rent a car, hire a driver, or call a taxi/Uber to take you from beach to beach. However you hop the sands, be sure to mix it up between popular beaches and secret nooks!

Then, Go Surfing!

surfing in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Tamarindo is world-renowned for its incredible surf, so it’s practically a must-do activity during your stay.

Surfing here can be budget-friendly, thanks to affordable board rentals available along the beach for $10-$20 a day. Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, Tamarindo offers top surf breaks for all levels. Grab a board and enjoy the waves to your heart’s content!

Or Learn to SUP

SUP paddle boarding Tamarindo Guanacaste 16 9

If traditional surfing isn’t your thing, how about an exciting challenge? Enter stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), an engaging water sport that combines balance, core strength, and a spirit of adventure.

All you need is a SUP board (similar to a surfboard) and a paddle. With a calm ocean and a desire to explore, you can paddle out, stand up, and start your journey—the vast Pacific Ocean awaits!

Then, Rest & Relax

Spa-Day-in-Tamarindo

We believe in taking time to unwind during your vacation, especially mid-trip. Dedicate a day – or part of a day – to total relaxation. Swim in your private pool, soak in the hot tub, stroll along the beach, browse souvenir shops, or simply read a book under the palms or by the pool. Whatever your favorite way to relax, make sure to carve out time for it.

In the Evening, Dine Out

Seasons-Restaurant-Tamarindo

Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, and particularly Tamarindo, offers a culinary scene where the freshest seafood meets vibrant fruits and vegetables, creating exquisite beach cuisine.

The best dinners in Tamarindo offer tempting spots to indulge in fresh-caught seafood, seared veggies, cold soups, rack of lamb, Argentinian barbecue, shrimp cocktail, and almost anything and everything else in between. We encourage you to try them all (ask us for recommendations!), especially dishes featuring the Catch of the Day and signature tropical cocktails. The ultimate test is whether it makes your mouth water!

Or  Hit the Food Trucks

Not in the mood for a sit-down meal? Tamarindo’s food trucks have a unique charm that makes dining an adventure – and they definitely deserve a spot on our list of favorite Tamarindo excursions!

Tamarindo is home to Jardín de Tamarindo, also known as the Tamarindo Garden, a delightful gathering of food trucks offering a wide variety of dishes. Here, you can savor budget-friendly Costa Rican ceviche, massive waffles, cheesy tequeños, and flavorful stir fry. It’s an international feast, and we love it!

Or Visit the Tamarindo Night Market (Thursdays)

To truly experience the town’s essence, don’t miss the Tamarindo Night Market. Open every Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., this vibrant event is a blend of dining, entertainment, and shopping.

Explore dozens of local artisan vendors offering handcrafted jewelry, glass-bottled kombucha, and more. Enjoy fire dancers, DJs, and traditional Costa Rican dancing, all perfectly complemented by the market’s onsite restaurants and food vendors. Indulge in a variety of delicious options, from cheesy pizza and pork BBQ to empanadas and vegan delights.

Surf Vacation? Surf Breaks, Pro Tips & Vacation Rentals in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

surfing in Tamarindo Costa Rica

There are many reasons to come to Tamarindo: a surf vacation Costa Rica and our vacation rentals in Guanacaste, Costa Rica are two of them! And they are great reasons.

If you’re here, you’re likely already drawn to Tamarindo’s epic surf, from beginner to advanced, some of which are world-renowned for their huge waves, big barrels, hard rights and lefts, and other serious challenges tailored to beginner, intermediate, and experienced surfers.

The big question for both beginner and skilled surfers is not so much where to go, but rather how to fit all the best spots into your stay. In and around Tamarindo, there are dozens of beaches, breaks, and frothy nooks and crannies that will thrill and challenge your skills (and help you build new ones). So, here’s an introduction to a few of our favorites:

Just North of the Tamarindo Diria

Beginner

surf lessons Tamarindo Costa Rica

vacation rentals in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Prime among Tamarindo beginner surfing hotspots, this downtown swell is great for learning how to surf. (Be sure to check out our surf lessons!)

It’s easy to find: Stand with your back to the Diria, then look right: conditions here are great, with waves that are consistently small, and as long as you stay clear of the rocky breaks of Pico Grande and Pico Pequeno, the soft sands cushion any newbie falls. You’ll often find vendors peddling surfboards and lessons around here. Surf’s up! And we have a few vacation rentals in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, right here.

In Front of Capitán Suizo

Beginner

Though surf is never 100% predictable anywhere in the world, the waves in front of Capitán Suizo are, more often than not, ideal for beginners: mild, frothy water with minimal pull – perfect for learning how to catch a wave, practice your pop-up, and ride one in.

Pro tip: If no one’s in the water, the waves are too small, even for brand-new surfers. Come back in an hour or so!

Playa Avellanas

Beginner to Intermediate

Playa Avellanas has a bit of a split personality: On calm days, when the waves are small, it’s a perfect choice for beginners. But on a big day – watch out! It’s advanced surfers only. But on those calm days, when Avellanas promises just the right-sized waves to learn on; on these days, grab your board and catch the waves around Palo Seco or Lola’s Restaurant, where the surf is both consistent and mostly tranquilo.

Pro tip: Be sure to stay south of the River Mouth and Little Hawaii, both big Avellanas surf hotspots and reserved for experts only.

Casitas

Beginner to Intermediate

Casitas, named for the original rental houses that dot the beach, is located just across the river mouth at the beginning of Playa Grande. (Note: Definitely pay the ¢500/$1 for the lancha boat ride across the river, as there are crocs!)

As Tamarindo beginner surfing spots go, this one can be hit or miss. On a “good” day, there’s a decently sized break better suited for intermediates, but on calmer days, the surf is small enough for even beginners. Ask around before you get in the water!

El Estero

Beginner to Intermediate

beginner surf Tamarindo Costa Rica

The exposed river mouth at the north end of Tamarindo Beach offers some great and forgiving waves for beginner surfers. The winds here are good and can produce consistent swells that often lean towards intermediate level, but if you stick to the breaks that crash onto the soft and sandy sea bottom, you’ll get serious practice on your pop-ups and longer rides.

Pico Grande & Pico Pequeño

Intermediate to Advanced

Pico Grande and Pico Pequeño are two of Tamarindo’s most prominent breaks. To find them, head to Playa Tamarindo, stand with your back to the Diria, and look right. You’ll see rocky outcroppings: Pico Grande is on the left (south) and Pico Pequeño is on the right (north).

These are mostly advanced breaks, with Pico Grande offering big waves on good days, and Pico Pequeño providing shoulder-high waves. You can ride from Pico Grande into Pico Pequeño via the frothing whitewater between the two breaks. Be very careful, as these spots are for advanced surfers only during high tide and a definite no-go at low tide.

Isla Capitán (Captain Island)

Intermediate to Advanced

Isla Capitán, located right in front of Tamarindo Beach, is a bit of a hidden gem. This tiny island offers an exposed reef break that few frequent. The remote location and the rocky reef bottom make it suitable only for seasoned surfers.

Pro tip: You can either paddle out (40 minutes) or take a boat to get there. The effort is worth it, but be cautious of the rocks and only ride at low tide.

Playa Grande

Intermediate to Advanced

We may have highlighted Playa Grande as one of our top Tamarindo surf spots for beginners, but it’s also a top pick for advanced surfers. This long stretch of sand features fast-breaking lefts and rights, barrels, peaks, and long rides. The surf is consistently good, making Playa Grande a mainstay for intermediate and advanced surfers alike.

Pro tip: Surf at mid- to high-tide for the best experience.

Playa Marbella

Intermediate to Advanced

Marbella surf break Tamarindo

Located between Junquillal and Ostional beaches, Playa Marbella offers two primary surf spots: Playa Coco and Playa Frijolar. Both spots have consistent year-round waves and few crowds.

Playa Coco’s beach break offers huge waves and hollow barrels that break both left and right. Playa Frijolar features hollows and barrels with a sandy bottom, perfect for when you wipe out after a big wave. We love that these advanced surf spots often feel like our own private playground!

Pro tip: Surf at mid-tide for optimal conditions.

Playa Langosta

Intermediate to Advanced

Located about a kilometer south of downtown Tamarindo, rocky Playa Langosta offers fast currents, big waves, and left- and right-breaks at its southern end. On a good day, the waves provide a serious challenge, and even on a not-so-good day, Langosta’s surf offers thrills for skilled surfers who aren’t afraid of rocky bottoms.

Pro tip: Be cautious at the river mouth.

Playa Negra

Intermediate to Advanced

surfing in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

A local favorite for its reef break, narrow peak, and thrilling right, Playa Negra is a must-visit for any surfer in Tamarindo. The break along the beach is tight, so try to visit during off-peak hours.

Pro tip: If you find yourself there during a busy time, remember your surf etiquette, exercise patience, and play nice.

Witch’s Rock

Intermediate to Advanced

Witch’s Rock is famous for a reason: it offers an incredible left that challenges even the best surfers. This world-renowned spot hosts many surf competitions, so you know the waves are big, the surf is consistent, and the challenge is real. On a windy day at low tide, prepare for seriously exciting barrels. Have fun and happy surfing!

Pro tip: Aim for mid- or high-tide for the best experience.

Family-Friendly Costa Rica Vacation: What to Do & Where to Stay

Planning a planning a family trip to Costa Rica? Welcome to the beginning of an incredible adventure! The truth is that family-friendly Costa Rica is basically all of Costa Rica: This is a very kid-friendly and even kid-welcoming country. Costa Rica loves kids and we hope your kids will love Costa Rica!

Families come in all shapes and sizes, and Costa Rica is very accommodating in that regard: While teeny tiny when measured in square miles, Costa Rica is vastly diverse – from sandy beaches and roaring waterfalls to puffing volcanoes and lush rainforests (and dry forests and cloud forests…), our small nation proudly offers something for everyone.

That’s not lip service. Yes, everyone. Whether you’re traveling with the littlest littles, inquisitive tweens, adventurous teens, or even multiple generations, you will find something (and likely, many somethings) for each and every member of your family.

Planning a Family Trip to Costa Rica

The truth is that your planning process is going to require making some decisions. Because family-friendly Costa Rica tours, attractions, activities, and things to do encompass almost everything available, it’s impossible to fit everything into one trip.

Hot Tip: Take your time! When it comes to planning, the best advice we can give is to divide your 5 to 10-day trip between no more than two locations.

We recommend this for a few reasons: For families, especially if your kids skew younger, moving around often (say 2-3 days in one place) can overwhelm your kids and take the relaxation out of the trip for you parents. If you can eke out 10+ days for vacation, you can consider three destinations… but we’d still recommend exploring fewer places on a deeper level, for a more profound and relaxing experience.

Family-Friendly Costa Rica Activities & Things to Do

kids beginner surfing Tamarindo Costa Rica

There is an entire world of things to do in Costa Rica. Honestly, the biggest challenge will always be narrowing it down!

Learn all you can. Discuss with your family. Allow everyone a bit of input on the wishlist. And, if possible, make space for everyone to pick at least one must-see or must-do; that way, everyone has something to dream about and look forward to!

And with that in mind, here’s some inspiration for perennial favorite family-friendly Costa Rica things to do:

Surfing (or Surf Lessons)

16 family activities & vacation rentals in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Surfing is quintessential to Tamarindo. While it’s a favorite spot for surfers worldwide, it’s also welcoming to beginners and kids. There are challenging waves for the experienced and gentle waves with sandy bottoms perfect for first-timers. And, trust us – there’s nothing like seeing your child’s face light up when they catch their first wave!

Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

SUP paddle boarding Tamarindo Guanacaste 16 9

Ok, ok – if surfing isn’t your thing but you still want to get on a board, consider stand-up paddleboarding. This popular watersport is both relaxing and challenging, requiring balance and core engagement. (Heads up: Your kids might school you in this one!) Once you’re up, it’s easy paddling and offers incredible sightseeing and wildlife watching around Tamarindo Bay.

Boogie Boarding

If boards, generally, aren’t your thing, try boogie boarding for a fun alternative. The gentle waves and full-body contact make it a perfect activity for all ages. Rent a board for $10-$15/day and enjoy the kid-friendly waves in front of Hotel Capitán Suizo.

Zip-Lining

activities with kids in Costa Rica

The high-adrenaline, major-bragging-rights activity in all the books and brochures, canopy tours and hanging bridges are often at the top of family bucket lists in Costa Rica. Zip-lining, a classic Costa Rican adventure, is safe and fun for the whole family. Kids aged 4+ can enjoy flying through the trees, glimpsing wildlife up close, and experiencing nature like never before.

Dolphin & Whale Watching

humpback whale breeching near Tamarindo

There’s nothing quite like the delight on a child’s face when they spot a breaching whale or playful dolphin. Book a whale-watching tour to experience this magic firsthand. These tours take you out to sea to spot humpback whales, various dolphin species, and, if you’re lucky, the occasional nesting sea turtle. Talk about a wildlife trifecta!

Kayaking

Ocean-kayaking-Costa-Rica-16-9

If deep-water boats don’t appeal to your family, then consider exploring Tamarindo from the water while paddling an ocean kayak. Whether you’re an early bird watcher or prefer sun-splashed scenery, kayaking offers a unique perspective. You might spot birds and monkeys in the mangroves or sea turtles and dolphins out at sea. Even without wildlife sightings, the estuaries and Pacific coastline are stunning, and a gentle paddle is always a joy.

Mud Baths & Hot Springs

There’s nothing that gets a family giggling more than getting muddy together! Spend a day at nearby Rincón de la Vieja National Park, where you can explore volcanic fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and steam vents. Afterward, soak in the hot springs and treat your skin to rejuvenating volcanic mud. The kids will love laughing at the stink and the adults will enjoy relaxing for a change!

Horseback Riding

Fulfill your dream of riding down the beach at sunset or through the surf. Our local horseback riding tours offer this idyllic experience, blending fantasy with a touch of local culture. And because our province of Guanacaste is known for its cattle ranches, cowboys, and horses, adding real authenticity to your time in Costa Rica.

Sunset Sailing

Tamarindo vacation outdoor activities sunset sailing

For families with older kids or those who enjoy a good swim followed by a tranquil sunset, a sunset sail epitomizes family-friendly Costa Rica. This afternoon tour takes you to a secluded cove for snorkeling and swimming, followed by a breathtaking sunset view over the Pacific Ocean. The kids can enjoy the catamaran hammocks while the adults toast to a beautiful day!

ATV Off-Roading

Ever thought of exploring Costa Rica’s backroads and hillsides via ATV? These all-terrain vehicles can take you to places that are otherwise hard to reach, providing views and experiences that are unforgettable. And the thrill of riding an ATV and the joy on your kids’ faces as they feel the wind in their hair makes this one a family favorite.

Waterfall Adventures

Llanos-de-Cortes-Waterfall-Costa-Rica_163kb

For a refreshing and memorable experience, hike to and swim beneath one of Guanacaste’s beautiful waterfalls. With cool, mountain-fed swimming holes below, these waterfalls offer a perfect day trip. (Remember to check safety guidelines before swimming.)

Hiking

From the most popular Tamarindo activities and tours to the most untouristed gems, our region of Costa Rica welcomes you to the inspiring, the beautiful, and the adventurous. To get you started in your planning, here are five fun (and often unknown) facts about Tamarindo:

Fun Fact: Tamarindo Surfing is Hollywood Famous!

surfing in Tamarindo Guanacaste 16 9

Once a sandy fishing village, surfing put Tamarindo on the world map back in the early 1990s, when Robert August and Wingnut released the movie The Endless Summer II.

Surfing remains our claim to fame, and Costa Rica’s North Pacific / Guanacaste province represents one of the world’s favorite destinations for a surf vacation – and for very good reason: We are home to consistent surf and renowned waves.

Notably, Guanacaste boasts iconic surf spots like Ollie’s Point (a right-point break stretching up to 300 yards) and Witch’s Rock (the site immortalized in The Endless Summer II). Additionally, our very own Tamarindo, along with Playa GrandePlaya Langosta, and Playa Avellanas, are recognized for their consistently exceptional surf experiences.

Fun Fact: Tamarindo is Home to the World’s Longest Humpback Whale Season

humpback whale breeching near Tamarindo

Costa Rican waters are home to approximately 25 species of dolphins and whales, making it a prime destination for marine enthusiasts. Among these majestic creatures, one of the most iconic and impressive is the humpback whale. So if you’re wondering what to see in Tamarindo Costa Rica, then we suggest looking out at the ocean.

Because what sets Tamarindo – and Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, generally – apart is that we host the world’s longest humpback whale-watching season. This distinction is owed to a fortuitous overlap between the northern migrations of South American humpbacks and the southern journey of North American whales.

Humpback whales, known for their immense size, weighing up to 40 tons (equivalent to a staggering 80,000 pounds), and voracious appetite, consuming up to 1.5 tons of krill daily, are a sight to behold in these rich waters. And you’ll have a good chance of encountering these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat: Whether you watch them from the coast (or your ocean-view vacation rental) or take a catamaran sale, spotting whales in their natural habitat is a truly unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers alike.

(And, of course, it’s one of our most popular and awe-inspiring Tamarindo activities and tours.)

Fun Fact: We’re Home to Rare Tropical Dry Forest

piggy back Costa Rican forest
Swap

Tropical dry forests are relatively rare compared to other types of tropical forests, and our region of Costa Rica is home to one of the largest remaining swaths of dry forest in the world, making this one of our top recommendations on the only-here side of what to see in Tamarindo Costa Rica.

Because tropical dry forests occur in regions with pronounced seasonal changes, characterized by a distinct dry season and a wet season, they are limited to areas where there is enough rainfall to support forest growth during the wet season, but where conditions become dry enough during the dry season to inhibit the growth of dense, evergreen forests. In other words, the tropics.

The problem resides in human impact, such as deforestation, agriculture, urbanization, and logging, which have significantly reduced the extent of tropical dry forests worldwide. Add to this, the threat of wildfire, thanks to development and a changing climate, and tropical dry forests are threatened, as sweeping fires convert the habitat into more fire-resistant ecosystems like savannas or grasslands.

Enter Costa Rica, where 25%+ of all land area is protected within natural parks, wildlife refuges, nature reserves, and other areas. And this means that you can observe this rare habitat, whether you’re visiting the natural riches of Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the cultural attractions of Santa Rosa National Park, or others.

Fun Fact: We’re Home to 5%+ of the World’s Total Biodiversity

monkey in Costa Rica

Did you know that Costa Rica boasts an astonishing 5% of the world’s total biodiversity, all within a remarkably compact area constituting just 0.3% of the Earth’s surface?

This ratio is nothing short of astounding, underscoring the richness of life teeming within our borders. An estimated 500,000 species call Costa Rica home – a staggering figure that includes an impressive 1,251 species of butterflies alone. Such biodiversity is unparalleled, making Costa Rica a global treasure trove of ecological wonder and discovery.

And, while you won’t find all 500,000+ species here, you will find quite a few! So, for those of you who are more nature-watcher than adrenaline junkie, embark on a serene kayaking excursion through the mangroves, beginning at the estuary near the river mouth and venturing into the wilderness of Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge. Keep an eye out for monkeysiguanas, and a variety of bird species!

Fun Fact: Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles Nest Here!

leatherback sea turtle Costa Rica 16 9

You may have heard (or read) it called Marino Las Baulas National Park, but this one’s more accurate name is Las Baulas National Marine Park. That’s for two reasons: The first is that the park’s extensive acreage is mostly of the marine variety – 43,240+ acres (175 km2) ocean acres to just 1,900 acres (7.7 km2) on land – and because this park is a critically important nesting site for endangered leatherback sea turtles (in Spanish, baulas).

For here, this coastal wonderland should definitely make your list of what to see in Tamarindo Costa Rica, as it welcomes nesting sea turtles every year – all the more important, given that there are so few of these nesting sites remaining in the world AND that leatherback populations are on the decline (hence, endangered). And if leatherback turtle conservation isn’t enough to get you there, know that this national park is also home to the biodiverse Tamarindo Estuary and its mangrove-lined canals, which are home to an incredible array of flora and fauna.

Where to Stay

What to see in Tamarindo Costa Rica and now, where to stay:

Casa Xanadu

For here, amidst the biodiversity afforded by rare tropical dry forest – one of the last remaining swatch in the world – Casa Xanadu is at the epicenter of wonder and wildlife: Green forest, sun-drenched sands, and the sparkling Pacific, where seabirds swoop and iguanas sun, where howler monkeys holler and parakeets squawk.

Just a few minutes from the beach – take the golf cart or follow your own two feet! – this stunning home welcomes you to four spacious bedrooms, a private infinity poolshaded terraces, and sun-splashed balconies. Costa Rica Easter Holiday: How & Where to Celebrate

aerial view Tamarindo Playa Grande 16 9

You call it your Costa Rica Easter holiday; Latin America calls it Semana Santa. You celebrate with chocolate, bunnies, colorful eggs, and meals based on ham or perhaps lamb. Costa Rica, however, celebrates with none of the above.

Instead, it embraces religious processions and Costa Rica Easter traditions, including stuffed pastries, corn and dried cheese biscuits (called rosquillas), and trips to the beach. And if you visit during this time of year, know that this week – typically falling anywhere from mid-March to mid-April – is poised to be the cultural experience of your life.

So, we’ve written this guide so you can know what to expect, when to expect it, and how to have the best vacation of your life amidst this unique cultural phenomenon.

Semana Santa, the Costa Rica Easter Holiday

purple-draped-cross-Easter-week-in-Costa-Rica-225x300-2

While much of the world will celebrate Easter on March 31, 2024, here in Costa Rica, we’ll be immersing ourselves in Semana Santa during the entire last week of March.

Though both occasions mark the resurrection of Christ, their similarities end there: Easter is a holiday, but Semana Santa is a cultural phenomenon that spans a whole week (and the entire season of Lent, if you want to be inclusive). And so, for all the cultural travelers seeking authenticity, we thought you might want to delve deeper into this.

What to Expect

In Costa Rica, Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is synonymous with a week-long vacation – nearly everyone in the country has at least part of, if not the entire week off. What’s more, the boasts its own special foods, TV shows, rules, and Costa Rica Easter traditions.

Here in Guanacaste, home to Tamarindo, long-held beliefs blend with Christian traditions, and the beach becomes the go-to destination for anyone able to reach it. Don’t associate Easter with beach trips? Well, you’re clearly not from Costa Rica.

Day by Day

The week begins quietly on Monday, with schools closed but most businesses still operating. Tuesday mirrors this pattern.

Concerned that a “religious festival week” would mean no alcohol? Don’t worry, it’s allowed… Mostly (keep reading). By Wednesday, a buzz of activity signals something big is happening. Supermarkets fill with beach supplies and cars head to the coast. It’s festive, lively, and overwhelming – Semana Santa is about to kick off.

Thursday sees the country grind to a halt, except for supermarkets. Bible story-based films air on public television. Year-round beach locals mix with an influx of city-dwelling Costa Ricans, who bring their own unique energy to the coast. And the festivities have just begun. Foreigners arrive, unaware of the impending chaos. Tamarindo transforms into a snarl of traffic, with beer delivery trucks blocking streets. After all, the Costa Rica Easter holiday also coincides with Spring Break!

In the past, alcohol sales were prohibited, but now tourist areas like Tamarindo bypass this rule. Still, memories remain of dry days when stores closed, buses stopped running, and climbing trees was taboo due to forest-dwelling dwarves. Yes, dwarves! Costa Rican folklore is a joy.

Today, we can climb trees, buy groceries, and visit bars during Semana Santa. However, services are still limited. Friday and Saturday mirror Thursday’s chaos, with another folklore belief that Holy Saturday always brings rain. While it doesn’t always rain, it has become a tradition. Easter Sunday marks the end of the festivities.

Then, beach towns gradually empty, returning to normalcy as everyone heads back to work. And with a collective sigh of relief, the coast cleans up and life resumes its usual pace.

Easter Week Weather

aerial view of Playa Avellanas
Pictured: Playa Avellanas

Semana Santa arrives at the hottest time of the year. If you love the heat, you’ll be the happiest beach bum on the shore! If you struggle with high temperatures and you’ve booked an Easter vacation in Tamarindo, you might opt to spend the midday hours in air-conditioned places or cooling off in the pool.

Not to worry! Your Tamarindo vacation rental will likely have air conditioning and a pool, so make the most of it! While open-air dining is common in Costa Rica, there are also air-conditioned restaurant options. We recommend heading to the beach in the early mornings –before 9 or after 5 pm for the best sunset views.

Costa Rica Easter Traditions

seafood dinner at Pangas Tamarindo

When you strip away the time off work and school, beach holidays, and a touch of bacchanalia – at its core, the Costa Rica Easter holiday holds profound religious significance, as Catholicism is the nation’s official religion.

Easter observance officially commences with preparations beginning on Ash Wednesday and extends throughout Lent. During this time, you may spot one of the most prevalent traditions: crosses embellished with purple, black, and white drapes, symbolizing Jesus’ journey to resurrection.

Easter Food

Culinary customs include the chiverre squash treats – a variety of spaghetti squash cooked down and sweetened with raw sugarcane – as well as seafood dishes, in international Lenten tradition.

Meanwhile, in Guanacaste, grandmothers and helpers prepare unique corn-based delicacies and sweet fruit puddings. In the background, others harvest coyol palm wine, a sweet juice when fresh – or a potent hangover when fermented.

Religious Processions

Towns and communities around Costa Rica host events on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, with Easter Sunday holding somewhat lesser significance, although some churches organize Joyful Resurrection processions.

On Maundy or Holy Thursday, one can witness the Last Supper procession, featuring representations of Jesus, the apostles, and Mary figures, often conducted in respectful silence. The procession typically starts at a designated point and concludes at a church, where the Last Supper is re-enacted. All are welcome to participate.

Good Friday brings forth the most elaborate procession events – in towns that host processions (not all do) – featuring a route adorned with the 14 stations of the cross, intricately designed and decorated. Participants, portraying figures such as Jesus, the Roman court, soldiers, and disciples, traverse the route in elaborate attire, evoking a profound spiritual and religious experience. All are welcome to attend.

While observing these traditions offers intriguing insights into Costa Rican culture, it’s essential to recognize that much of the population is deeply religious, and these processions are solemn religious ceremonies.

Where to Stay

One of the best things to do in Tamarindo begins before you even arrive: Dream, peruse, and then reserve your favorite vacation home! Not only do vacation rentals add an extra layer of privacy and space to your time in Costa Rica, but they help you both save money (hi there, full kitchen and more!) and build in vacation extras (ex. a resort poolbeach gear, and more) that you’d have to pay for, anywhere else.

That said, bear in mind that the Costa Rica Easter holiday is one of the busiest times of year, and your favorite home may book months or even a year+ in advance. With that in mind, here are some recommendations to start your dreaming:

Surf Vacation in Costa Rica? Plan the Ultimate Trip, From Beginner to Advanced

surfing at Playa Grande Costa Rica

Planning the ultimate surf vacation in Costa Rica is an exciting prospect! As you eagerly anticipate the thrill of riding the waves, you may find yourself already dreaming about those invigorating morning rides, that special surfboard wax, and even those revitalizing afternoon naps you’ll enjoy on your vacation.

However, a slight challenge then presents itself – you’re not entirely certain about the details. Where to go, when to go, where to stay – it’s all a bit uncertain. Because the best surf beaches in Costa Rica are legendary, and whether you’re a beginner just getting the hang of popping up or an advanced surfer seeking the next exhilarating challenge, one thing is certain: you’ll soon be surfing in Costa Rica. That alone is exhilarating, and this guide is here to fill in the blanks.

From the best surf breaks (from brand-new beginner to absolutely epic), the top surf destinations, and even where to stay, here’s your guide to planning the ultimate surf vacation in Costa Rica:

Where to Go: Surf Destinations in Costa Rica

aerial view Tamarindo Playa Grande 16 9
Tamarindo is one of the top spots for a surf vacation in Costa Rica

The good news is that almost every corner of Costa Rica offers both beginner-friendly and quality surf. The even better news is that a select few areas boast world-class surf. The only slightly less good news is that you won’t have the luxury of surfing every spot in one go – unless, of course, you plan to stay for a few years. This is where prioritization becomes key.

Our rule of thumb is to focus on one major surf region for every 7-10 days of your journey. This approach allows ample time to explore, to relish the surroundings, and to surf the essential breaks, with room to add in a few of the more optional, off-the-beaten-path gems.

A quick note: While Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Caribbean beaches offer plenty of opportunities to surf, our wheelhouse is definitely the North Pacific. So, that’s where we’re focusing, because it’s where we can provide the best information. That said, if you’re looking to extend your reach into more of the best surf beaches in Costa Rica, then we’d recommend searching out the Central Pacific (Jacó south through Playa Hermosa and Esterillos), the South Pacific (Dominical south through Matapalo and Pavones), and the Southern Caribbean (Cahuita and Salsa Brava, specifically).

Tamarindo & the North Pacific

Situated in the northwestern part of Costa Rica, the North Pacific / Guanacaste represents one of the world’s favorite destinations for a surf vacation in Costa Rica – and for very good reason: it’s home to consistent surf and renowned waves.

Notably, Guanacaste boasts iconic surf spots like Ollie’s Point (a right-point break stretching up to 300 yards) and Witch’s Rock (immortalized in the classic surf film, Endless Summer II). Additionally, our very own Tamarindo, along with Playa Grande, Playa Langosta, and Playa Avellanas, are recognized for their consistently exceptional surf experiences.

The Nicoya Peninsula

A few hours south of Guanacaste, the Nicoya Peninsula is home to Mal Pais, Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa, and other laid-back surf towns. Embracing a rugged and challenging terrain, this tranquil region features some of Costa Rica’s most secluded beaches, offering both challenging lefts and rights. Here, rocky reefs churn up substantial swells, adding an extra layer of allure to this mellow surf haven.

Tamarindo Beginner & Intermediate Surf Spots

kids beginner surfing Tamarindo Costa Rica

At Vacation Rentals of Tamarindo, our community includes many avid surfers. While we may not be experts on every last nuance of a surf vacation in Costa Rica, we have the expertise and the experience to help you plan your best trip ever.

With that, here’s a glimpse into this epic and memorable vacation experience, beginning with some of the best surf beaches in Costa Rica for beginners:

North of the Tamarindo Diria: For downtown Tamarindo, this swell is a cherished spot among locals, perfect for novices eager to learn how to surf. Grab your board and make your way to the beach. Position yourself with your back facing the Diria and gaze to the right: you’ll encounter small yet consistent waves, enticing you to paddle out. Tip: This is a great spot for surf lessons!

Playa Avellanas: Inevitably one of those seek-the-advice-of-locals scenarios, Playa Avellanas emerges as an excellent choice for beginners, particularly on calm days. (Caution is advised on less tranquil days – it’s exclusively for advanced surfers.) However, during calm conditions, revel in the frothy promise of this pristine beach, featuring perfectly sized waves near Palo Seco and Lola’s Restaurant.

Capitán Suizo: Situated in downtown Tamarindo, the waves in front of Capitán Suizo stand out for their predictability, consistently catering to beginners. (Pro tip: If the water is devoid of surfers, the waves may be too small, even for those brand-new to surfing. Consider revisiting in about an hour.)

Casitas: Found at the river mouth (accessed by lancha boat, and be mindful of crocs!) and near Playa Grande, Casitas can be a hit-or-miss locale. Suitable for beginners on days when conditions are less favorable (read: calmer) and aligning more with intermediate levels on more favorable (read: bigger waves) days.

El Estero: Located at the northern end of Tamarindo Beach, close to the river mouth (again, exercise caution due to crocs!), El Estero proves to be an excellent spot for beginners with a degree of confidence. The consistent swells and sandy breaks offer an ideal setting for practicing pop-ups and enjoying longer rides.

Tamarindo has earned global renown for its surf scene, and rightfully so! Home to some of the best surf beaches in Costa Rica, our coast beckons with colossal waves, challenging rights and lefts, massive barrels, and other exhilarating challenges that can be downright irresistible.

Our advice: Don’t resist! Lean in, embrace the challenge, and plan the most epic surf vacation in Costa Rica. To get you started, allow us to provide you with a preview of the thrilling experiences that await:

Pico Grande & Pico Pequeño: Meet two of our prominent surf breaks, Pico Grande and Pico Pequeño, positioned to the right of the Diria, just north and south of the rocky outcroppings. (Hint #1: These are among the most advanced breaks in town.) Anticipate shoulder-high waves and vigorous whitewater. Caution: Do Not Ride at low tide.

Isla Capitán (Captain Island): Situated just off our main beach, this exposed reef break on Captain Island is relatively accessible (pay for a boat ride or embark on a 40-minute paddle). However, it remains infrequently visited, largely due to its rocky bottom, exclusively reserved for advanced surfers.

Playa Grande: Beyond the beginner-friendly Casitas, Playa Grande unfolds into an extended stretch of consistently impressive fast-breaking lefts and rights, featuring barrels, peaks, and extensive rides.

Playa Marbella: Nestled between Junquillal and Ostional beaches, Playa Marbella boasts two spots: Playa Coco and Playa Frijolar. Both offer year-round, consistent waves – impressive in size with hollow barrels breaking in both directions. Notably, Playa Frijolar earns bonus points for its forgiving sandy bottom.

Playa Langosta: Just a kilometer south of downtown, Playa Langosta may appear serene, but it hosts some of our most beloved waves – substantial crests and left and right breaks that promise thrills for surfers unafraid of rocky bottoms. Exercise caution at the river mouth.

Playa Negra: A local favorite, Playa Negra, with its reef break and narrow peak, showcases a thrilling right. Be mindful that Playa Negra can become crowded, underscoring the importance of observing wave etiquette.

Witch’s Rock: The quintessential surf spot, this legendary location boasts an incredible left that challenges even the most skilled surfers, often serving as the stage for surf competitions. On windy days at low tide, brace yourself for seriously exciting barrels. Aim for mid- or high-tide for optimal conditions.

Where to Stay:

When you’re planning a surf vacation in Costa Rica, your accommodations are paramount: you need to be close to the waves so you can ride any time of day, and you also want to be convenient to other area breaks. The great news is you can have all that, without sacrificing your comfort or the amenities.
